Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thylacine
Answer: Australia
The thylacine, or Tasmanian Tiger, went extinct on mainland Australia about a thousand years ago. It had survived on the island of Tasmania until 1936. They were hunted to extinction because of their habit of attacking domesticated sheep, goats, and other farm animals.
2. Bali Tiger
Answer: Indonesia
The last Bali tiger was seen in 1937 at the Sumbar Kima in western Bali, where it had been shot. Although there were some steps taken to save this species, most were not started until the tiger was already extinct. Experts believe this species became extinct due to loss of habitat and being deliberately hunted to extinction.
3. Guam flying fox
Answer: Guam
The Guam flying fox was a large bat with a wingspan of approximately seventy centimeters. They dined on fruits, nuts, and other local foliage. Not a lot is known about this animal as only three were ever collected before they went extinct in 1968.
4. Cuban ivory-billed woodpecker
Answer: Cuba
The last visual sighting of a Cuban ivory-billed woodpecker was in 1987 and they are thought to have died out within the following five years. Loss of habitat was the biggest threat to these birds.
5. Giant Galliwasp
Answer: Jamaica
The Jamaican giant galliwasp, also known as the sinking galliwasp, was common to the Caribbean. They were entered into the scientific family around 1800, about 40 years before they went extinct. The introduction of the mongoose onto the island has often been blamed for their extinction.
6. Zanzibar Leopard
Answer: Zanzibar
The last living Zanzibar leopard was seen in 1996, and this subspecies of leopard is thought to have been deliberately hunted into extinction. The locals believed this beautiful wild cat was kept as a pet by witches, which led to their deliberate execution during the middle of the 20th century.
7. Baiji
Answer: China
The baiji is a fresh-water river dolphin that could grow up to eight feet long and weight up to 500 lbs. Loss of their habitat and negative interaction with the fishing industry is believed to have been the primary reason for the extinction of this animal.
8. Tarpan
Answer: Russia
The tarpan is an extinct subspecies of wild horse that at one time ran wild through Poland and western areas of Russia. There is only one known photo of a living tarpan which was published in 1884. The last known tarpan died in 1909 at a Russian zoo.
9. Eastern Elk
Answer: USA
Thought to have become extinct by the end of the 19th century, the eastern elk were larger than their western cousins. They were hunted for food until they were extinct. They were just one of the many animals of this region that became extinct through deliberate hunting and habitat loss.
10. Pyrenean Ibex
Answer: Spain
The exact cause of the extinction of the Pyrenean ibex is not known for sure. Habitat loss and climate change are thought to have been the biggest stressors on these beautiful animals. These Spanish goats were simply lovely and a great loss to the natural area of Spain.
