Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What book illustrated by Eric Carle was his breakthrough (printed in 1967), teaching animals and colors? (It was written by Bill Martin, Jr.)

Answer: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

This classic book is a favorite for most children and has been instrumental in teaching our son animals and colors. It led to more books with similar themes such as "Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See" as well as "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?". The other choices listed are also great Eric Carle books.
2. Which Margaret Wise Brown book is a perfect bedtime companion as you say "Goodnight" to all things familiar? (The rhythm of the verse as well as the familiarity of the items in the bedroom is soothing to a little one. It features the bunnies seen in some of her other books.)

Answer: Goodnight Moon

This is a FABULOUS book for little ones to drift to sleep to. First published in 1947, it is still celebrated today as a favorite by children. All of the other choices mentioned are also written by Margaret Wise Brown. Another favorite of our son is "Runaway Bunny," also by Brown. He loves to find the mouse in all of the pictures in the book.
3. What book about a kind-hearted little duck introduces a frog to the pond where the duck and his family like to play?

Answer: Little Quack's New Friend

This book was purchased after we discovered "Little Quack" in a box of Cheerios and our son fell in love. Written by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Derek Anderson, this book has beautiful pictures and narratives that are short and to the point, but lots of fun.

The rhythm of the "sounds" in this book is lovable. "Little Quack's Hide and Seek" is another book by these two. The other two choices are quotes from the actual book.
4. Which collection of stories follows many people and events through Busytown?

Answer: Richard Scarry's "What Do People Do All Day?"

This collection of short stories is a wonderful look at how jobs are performed throughout Busytown by following people such as firefighters, postal workers, bakers, contractors, and doctors. As with all of Richard Scarry's books, the illustrations are great and provide extra notes within them to teach children even more than just what is written in the story itself.
5. What work, authored by Henrietta and Paul Stickland, is a rhyming account of various dinosaurs and what they are doing on their way to lunch?

Answer: Dinosaur Roar

Since our son is obsessed with dinosaurs, we thought this would be a good buy when we saw it in the bookstore. Boy, were we right! This wonderful book has short text and colorful illustrations that capture his mind. It was the first book that he "read" (or recited) back to me. It is a must at EVERY bedtime. It was published in 1997.
6. This obscure little book was a find at a consignment shop and is a hit with our son. Which book looks at the life of one very talkative farm animal and his interaction with other animals?

Answer: Dennis the Donkey

This book, first published in 1939, was written by William McGreal and illustrated by Cyrus Hill. Other than that, I can find no information on it, nor have I met anyone who has ever heard of it. However, my son loves it. Every night we read about this donkey that annoys the other animals with his talking until he loses his voice.
7. What short book reflects on how different animal fathers care for their young?

Answer: Daddy Cuddles

This fabulous book by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben was published in 2005 and focuses on a father-child relationship. My son enjoys hearing how a "daddy monkey cuddles his baby monkey." However, sometimes we insert his name into the place of "baby."
8. Which brightly colored book was published by Kindermusik in 2006 and features the dance of the honeybee?

Answer: Wiggle, Waggle, Loop-de-loo

This book by Traci N. Todd features a little bee that looks far and wide for someone to do his very special dance, but finds comfort at home when he discovers that this dance can only be found among his friends and family. The illustrations are fabulous and capture even the smallest child's attention. Older child love the meter of the verse and the rhyming nonsense words!
9. What book (by the Franklin Covey Institute) features the habits of kids from Sunnyvale in a book about a boy who learns how to prioritize?

Answer: Pedro and the Present

This book was obtained in a kids' meal from a fast food restaurant. My personal opinion of this book is not great, but my son LOVES it, and the message is not bad, so we read it. In the book, Pedro gets a pet parrot who helps him start remembering the most important tasks. Written by Stephen Covey in 2000.
10. Which Little Golden Book features the artwork of Garth Williams, who depicts many cuddly creatures for this book?

Answer: Baby Farm Animals

This book features the names of many animal babies and my son loved looking at the wonderful pictures and telling me what sound each animal makes. I even learned a bit myself (like that a baby swan is a cygnet). Originally published in 1956, it has been entertaining and educating children ever since.
