Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Tip create Jack Pumpkinhead?

Answer: To scare Mombi

Mombi went on a trip to gather illegal magical supplies. While she was away, Tip spent much of his day creating an elaborate trick to play on her. He created a man with a pumpkin head and wood and even dressed it. However, Mombi found the man before Tip could scare her and she decided to test her new Powder of Life; thus, Jack Pumpkinhead was born.
2. What was the name of General JinJur's army?

Answer: The Army of Revolt

General Jinjur gathered up many girls of Oz to revolt against the Scarecrow and all of the men in the Emerald City. They felt men had been in power for too long. For the most part, the women just wanted the City's beautiful jewels. They all wore similar outfits, except for different colored strips on their skirts. Women from the country of the Quadlings wore a red stripe, women from the world of Munchkins wore blue, others wore yellow to represent the Winkies, and still others wore purple to represent the country of the Gillikins.
3. What was Jack constantly worrying about?

Answer: His head

Jack Pumpkinhead constantly worried about his head breaking, spoiling, or being cooked. General Jinjur threatened to cook his head into tarts. When the group went into the river, Jack worried his wet head might spoil. He called Tip his father, and wondered why he couldn't have made him out of something more durable, like tin or straw.
4. The group met Mr. H.M. Wogglebug, T.E. What did "T.E." stand for?

Answer: "Thoroughly Educated"

The group was stuck in a field because the Sawhorse's leg broke and there was no wood around to fix him. They encountered a large beetle, who handed over a card that read "Mr. H.M. Wogglebug, T.E." The bug explained that "H.M." meant "Highly Magnified" and "T.E." meant "Thoroughly Educated." The Wogglebug said that he used to live in a classroom and learned much from the teacher, Professor Nowitall, the most famous scholar in Oz. Nowitall saw the Wogglebug and magnified him to teach the class about insects.

However, the bug decided to leave the room still magnified, much happier for it. As a result, he was highly magnified and thoroughly educated.
5. The group saw faces of young girls in sunflowers in a field.

Answer: True

On their way back to the Emerald City, the friends encountered large sunflowers that whirled colorfully, causing them to get confused. When the Tin Woodman thought about chopping them down, the faces of many young girls appeared in the flowers and he couldn't bring himself to harm them.

It was all a trick of Mombi's, who had joined the Army of Revolt. She tried many different tricks to stop the men on their journey.
6. Whose intellect was the Wogglebug impressed by?

Answer: The Scarecrow's

The Wogglebug was quite impressed with his own intelligence, being thoroughly educated. But the Scarecrow impressed the bug with his own intellect. He told the Wogglebug, upon being called unusual, "Everything in life is unusual until you get accustomed to it." And later, when Jack was complaining about being unusual, the Scarecrow told him it wasn't a bad thing.

He said, "... I am convinced that the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed." The Wogglebug called him a philosopher and admired what he had to say.
7. The group created a flying creature in order to escape, each bringing a component to give it a body. What did Tip bring?

Answer: A sofa

Each member of the group quickly sought out pieces to create a creature. With help from the Sawhorse, Tip carried a sofa up to the roof, where they set to build it so it could fly straight up. Jack Pumpkinhead provided a broom, which was used to steer.

The Wogglebug gave the creature its head in the form of a former Gump's head. The Tin Woodman chopped down four mighty leaves from the royal palm tree. The Scarecrow provided different ropes and straps. With the last of the Powder of Life, Tip created the new Gump, who was capable of flying.
8. What was Tip's wish when he took the pill?

Answer: He wished he'd never taken it

The trick to making the pill work was to count to seventeen by twos. Nobody could figure out how to do it until, of all people, the Sawhorse suggested they start with half. So Tip counted off half, one, three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, and finally seventeen, and took the pill.

But then he fell to the ground because he was in so much pain. The Tin Woodman wept for Tip and finally the boy cried out that he wished he'd never even taken the pill. The next thing Tip knew, the pain was gone and there were once again three pills in the pillbox.
9. Mombi tried hard to escape from Glinda. Which of the following did she transform herself into?

Answer: A rose

Glinda and the others thought old Mombi had successfully escaped after they retook the Emerald City. Mombi was an impressive sorceress and turned herself into a rose, cleverly disguising herself. However, Glinda saw through it and discovered her after the Tin Woodman picked the rose. She also became a swift griffin, but ultimately was caught by the powerful Glinda the Good.
10. Who was destined to rule the Emerald City?

Answer: Ozma

Glinda learned that Mombi had visited with the Wizard of Oz, but she didn't know why. It turned out that Mombi took Ozma of Oz and transformed the child into a boy... none other than Tip! So Tip, the main character, was changed back into a girl and eventually accepted her fate as ruler of the Emerald City, since the Scarecrow didn't even want to rule.

She kept her friends close by at the end of the story.
