Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What caused the Tin Woodsman to be made of tin?

Answer: The Wicked Witch of the East placed a spell on his axe.

The Tin Woodsman told Dorothy and the Scarecrow the tale of how came to be made of tin. He had fallen in love with a young girl and she was to marry him once he built them a house. The girl lived with a fat lazy woman who didn't want her to leave. The girl did all the cooking and cleaning for the woman.

The woman in turn made a deal with the Witch of the East to help keep the girl. The Witch put a spell on the Tinsman's axe that caused him to cut off his own leg. The Tinsman had a new leg made of tin and was soon back to work. Eventually all his limbs and head were cut off by the axe.

He had all these parts replaced by the same man who did his leg. The Witch had the Tinsman cut in half which is why he lost his heart.
2. What made Dorothy realize there was something not quite right about the Scarecrow?

Answer: The Scarecrow winked at Dorothy as she was looking at him.

Dorothy had just barely started her journey to Oz when she spotted the Scarecrow. She was looking at him and he winked at her. Dorothy had never seen a scarecrow wink before. She went over to the Scarecrow and introduced herself. The Scarecrow in turn introduced himself as well. Dorothy was able to help the Scarecrow get down.

The Scarecrow then told Dorothy that he was just made the previous day. The Scarecrow decided to go with Dorothy to see if the Wizard would help him too.
3. What word did Dorothy use to describe Toto to the Cowardly Lion?

Answer: She told the Lion that Toto was made of meat.

Dorothy, Toto, The Scarecrow, and Tinsman were walking through a scary part of the forest. The entire time they were in the forest they heard growling. Suddenly the Lion came out of the forest and knocked over the Scarecrow. He then tried to claw the Tinsman, but was unable.

The Lion then went after Toto, but Dorothy stepped in and slapped his nose. The Lion made a fuss and Dorothy called him a coward. The Lion agreed and then asked what Toto was made of. Dorothy told him he was a meat dog. The Lion joined the companions on their quest to Oz. Toto and The Lion soon became fast friends, once Toto forgave the Lion for trying to eat him.
4. What did the Tin Woodsman accidentally kill?

Answer: He accidentally killed a beetle.

As the companions were walking the yellow brick road the Tinsman stepped on a beetle. He was so upset by this action that he cried. He almost rusted himself again, but managed to stop. He made a vow to himself to watch where he was going. The Tinsman could not bear to harm another living creature. As the companions continued to walk, he saw and stepped over an ant to avoid killing it.
5. What two animal parts made up the Kalidahs?

Answer: The Kalidahs were made up of the body of a bear and head of a tiger.

The Kalidahs were ferocious creatures that were one part bear and one part tiger. The Cowardly Lion was deathly afraid of them. The companions were trying to cross a gulch. The Scarecrow told the Tinsman to cut down a nearby tree so they could cross. The companions started to cross when the Kalidahs approached them running.

They were two of them and they ran toward the companions quickly. The Lion put Dorothy behind him and swore he would protect her or die trying. The Scarecrow told the Tinsman to cut off the bottom of the tree. Once the tree was cut, the Kalidahs fell to the bottom of the gulch.
6. What type of creature rescued the Scarecrow from the river?

Answer: The creature that rescued the Scarecrow was a stork.

Dorothy along with her companions were crossing a river to get to the Emerald City. The current from the river was stronger then they thought. The river took the raft down stream. The Scarecrow had fallen off when the pole he was using to move the raft got stuck in the mud.

The Scarecrow wound up getting stuck on the pole in the river. The companions finally made it to the other side when the Lion jumped in and pulled the raft to the shore. The companions were sad to have lost the Scarecrow. They decided to walk back up the shore as it was the quickest way to Oz.

They saw the Scarecrow and wondered how they could help him. A stork came by and said she could help if he wasn't too heavy. Dorothy reassured the stork that he was very light. The stork flew over and picked up the Scarecrow and put him down on the shore.

The companions were all happy to have the Scarecrow back with them.
7. Who had the idea on how to save the Lion from the poppy field?

Answer: Scarecrow

The Tin Woodsman had just saved the life of the Queen Mouse from the bobcat. She then said she was indebted to him and would do anything he requested. The Scarecrow asked the Queen how many mice she ruled. The Queen replied that she ruled thousands. The Scarecrow asked the Queen to summon all her mice and have them bring a large piece of string.

The Scarecrow then had the Tinsman build a truck out of nearby trees. The Scarecrows plan was to rescue the Lion. The Lion had fallen asleep in the field of flowers.

The scent put off by all the flowers was poisonous and would kill the Lion. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodsman could not move him as he was very large and heavy. When all the mice returned they put the Scarecrow's plan into action and it worked.

The Lion woke up a short time later.
8. What was required by everyone who entered the Emerald City?

Answer: They were required to put on spectacles before they entered the city.

The guard would not let the companions into Emerald City until he placed special green spectacles over their eyes. The glasses were used to protect the eyes from the green glare caused by all the emeralds in the city. The guard placed the glasses on Dorothy and then locked them on her head with a small lock. He then did this to the rest of her group including Toto.
9. How did Oz appear to the Scarecrow?

Answer: Oz appeared as a beautiful woman.

Dorothy and her friends arrived at the Emerald City. They requested a meeting with Oz immediately. Oz granted their request, but only one at a time. Oz would also only see one of the companions a day. The first to go was Dorothy; she saw Oz as the enormous head.

The second to go was the Scarecrow; he was surprised to see Oz as a beautiful woman. The Tin Woodsman saw Oz as a enormous beast. The Lion saw the great and terrible Oz as a fireball. All the companions were given the same mission: to kill the Witch of the West, and then their request would be granted.
10. Who directed the movie version of this timeless classic?

Answer: Victor Fleming

This classic piece of literature was written by L. Frank Baum. He wrote down the stories he told his four sons. His mother-in-law was the one who inspired him to do so. The book spawned a number of sequels such as "The Patchwork Girl of Oz" and "Ozma of Oz". The book inspired the movie that I still enjoy immensely.

I found the book to be a little more dark then the movie. There was a lot more violence in the book. The Tinsman, although he was searching for a heart, did not have a problem killing the bobcat. Another main difference were the shoes Dorothy wore in the book as opposed to the movie. She wore silver in the book and ruby in the movie.

The movie was directed by Victor Fleming. It was released in 1939, the same year as "Gone With the Wind". The movie starred Judy Garland and Bert Lahr.
