What an exciting turn out to right field in season 3. These special sea caves use moonlight to trigger enormous geological power, employing super water cannons to deflect natural space debris. It appears that every fifty years, one or more young girls are called to a local sea cave and are transformed into mermaids, where they serve as the moderators of this natural defence system.

Answer: Max made them for Gracie, Louise, and Julia.

A whole essay can be written on these lockets, for they bridge the three 1950s mermaids to the present mermaids.

Like Cleo, Gracie found it most difficult to accept being a mermaid, and it was Gracie's boyfriend Max, who evidently did some silversmithing, and made the three lockets for the three of them, hoping that his beloved Gracie could learn to embrace what she had become.

Unfortunately, Max's attention, and the locket was too troubling for Gracie. She threw her locket in the moon pool, cut her ties with Max, and found a way to be permanently free of the mermaid effect.

Fifty years later, Emma found Gracie's locket at the bottom of the moon pool and gave it to Cleo.

Answer: The injury is persistent after changing back.

This interesting topic is documented in the Treasure Hunt episode. In this, Rikki receives a nasty bang on the head from a falling crate while underwater. She is knocked unconscious in mermaid form, and Zane has to pull her out of the water.

After changing back, she is still unconscious and has to be revived, and she still has a cut on her forehead.

I've always wondered about their cell phones. Even that seems to carry through the mermaid transformation.

Answer: Golf

The season three episode "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" could well be the funniest episode in the first three seasons.

While Lewis insisted on pouring the gravity-defying water back in the moon pool, Cleo was determined to try experimenting on it secretly. To keep Lewis busy, she took advantage of her father's usual weekly golf buddy cancelling, and talking Lewis into playing golf with her dad.

But that round of golf was almost as much fun as watching Cleo and Rikki try to contain that silly water orb. While Lewis insisted he had never played golf before, he played like a pro, with exceptionally long straight drives, sinking incredibly long putts, and even a hole-in-one on the 18th. Meanwhile, poor Don Sertori was having a dreadful round.

Answer: Miriam Kent

Each season so far has featured a "mean girl", and Miriam was it in Season 1. After trying to make some general trouble for Emma by turning off the cool room's refrigeration unit, she later hid in the cool room. When Emma found things melting, she flash froze everything in there, including Miriam.

It took a coordinated effort from Rikki and Cleo to revive Miriam, which was very fortunate, since as Lewis had observed, Miriam was frozen solid, and in milliseconds.

Although this was an accident, we cannot help but wonder what these girls could do in self-defence if they were really threatened. We did see a small demonstration in the closing episode of Season 1. This time, Emma froze only the guy's wetsuit and Cleo knocked the wind out of another guy with a blast of water. As they all turned on Dr. Denman, she surrendered.

Given that Rikki did wilfully vapourize an entire swimming pool in less than a minute, one has to wonder what she really could do to someone if she were desperate. After all, Louise did say that Rikki's power was the most dangerous of all.

Answer: Nate had just soaked the two of them on the pier by reving the Zodiac.

There are two passionate "Help me" scenes, and both involved Nate and Zane.

The first was when Nate and Zane threw Cleo in Miriam's backyard pool. They went in the house, leaving Cleo to fend for herself when Lewis arrived. Frightened that she could not avoid being fully revealed as a mermaid before Lewis, she banked on their ten year friendship to plead for his help, "Lewis, you have to help me."

In Episode 3 of Season 2, it had been left with Zane believing that the whole mermaid effect was over. Rikki was talking with Zane about getting back together. But now she's been splashed in front of Nate. Within seconds, Nate will see her in all her mermaidy glory. And Rikki knows that if she dives in the water, it will be obvious to Zane as to why she had to. Rikki is in a position where she has to trust Zane. "Help me," she pleads verbally and with her eyes.

If you time it out, this was one of the longest transformation delays. Rikki said, "Help me" 9 seconds after getting splashed. She actually took 25 seconds after getting splashed to dive in the water. In Season 3, a good splash in the face transformed Rikki in barely 3 seconds. Lucky is hardly the word for it.

Answer: On a yacht

Will, and presumably Sophie, grew up on a yacht. Will is the younger and was having to complete his final year of high school on the Gold Coast.

This leads to some curiosity about their family, as their parents are never seen, no family home is ever seen, and not even this yacht is ever seen. The only family member Will has at his graduation is his sister Sophie. And Isabella was there alone.

This lack of family revelation is inconsistent with the show, as the home life of every other significant character is shown. Rikki's home and single father are finally revealed in season two. Zane's home is shown, and even Miriam's and Charlotte's respective homes are shown. We met Charlotte's mother in three separate episodes, and Zane and Lewis both spoke on the phone with Miriam's mother.

But no (family) home or parents are ever shown for Sophie, Will, or Isabella. Isn't that odd? I wonder if any of them are orphans.

Answer: She stepped in a kid's sandcastle.

Have you ever had such a crush somebody that you just got a bit clumsy and all tongue-tied when trying to talk to the love of your life? One of the most entertaining aspects of Season 3 was Isabella's huge crush on Will.

There is a charming scene earlier in that same episode where Isabella gets tongue-tied and stutters when trying to talk to Will. And now here she is, sandals in her hand, walking barefoot on the dry sand, gazing at Will, trying to say with her heart what her lips cannot utter, until she plunks her clumsy foot into this kid's sandcastle.

And while Isabella is not a token klutz (we all saw how annoying that was in Star Wars), she does lose her balance carrying a heavy backpack and peeking in at windows at the most inopportune times, and she certainly put her foot in her mouth trying to tell off Will in front of Sophie.

Isabella is such a dear, and she sure is cute!

Answer: Zane smooched Sophie after Will's winning dive.

When Will won the free dive competition, Sophie threw herself at Zane and smooched him. Zane was wiping his mouth on his wrist afterwards. But Rikki didn't see that. She saw the smooch and held Zane responsible. In reality, Zane only had a business relationship with Sophie. It was Sophie who kept pushing for more.

Rikki is very admirable in the show for her great ability to read other people. She fired Sophie from the cafe after Sophie plagiarised Isabella's idea for the Dolphin Rescue fundraising concert.

Another great quality that I hope many female fans will recognize is that Rikki thinks with her head and not with her heart. Rikki has tremendous discipline over her emotions, and when she had enough of putting up with persistent immature behaviour from Zane, she said good-bye and walked out.

A great many would-be girlfriends would save themselves a lot of grief, heartache, abuse, and defilement if they could just follow Rikki's example.
