Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what is Naughty by Nature?

Answer: Hip hop group from New Jersey

The hip hop group Naughty by Nature was formed in the mid-1980s by three musicians, rapper Treach, Vin Rock, and DJ Kay Gee. They had a hit with the track "O.P.P," which we will not spell out as this is a family-friendly site. The song was listed on Billboard's Top 100 for the year 1991.

Treach was married at one point to Pepa of Salt-n-Pepa, and has also built an acting career, with guest roles in "The Sopranos," "CSI," and "Love & Hip Hop."
2. "It's not nice to fool mother nature!" was a line from a popular television commercial from the late 1970s. What was it advertising?

Answer: Chiffon margarine

Mother Nature, actually actress Dena Dietrich dressed in a white, flowing costume standing in a fake forest, tasted Chiffon margarine and assumed it was butter. She was not pleased when the narrator informed her that it wasn't butter; it was Chiffon.

Margarine was created as a cheaper version of butter, originally using beef fat but now usually vegetable oil. It was very common in the U.S. during the World War II years and soon after. It would arrive at the store in bags without any color; a little chalky pill would be included, and people would put the pill inside the bag, then squash it around until the margarine had the yellow look of butter. This one one of my mother's regular chores in 1940s Iowa.

When these commercials began running, margarine was considered healthier than butter, but that hasn't borne out in more recent studies.

Ms. Dietrich could also be seen in old episodes of "Life with Lucy," "All My Children," and "The Golden Girls."
3. In 1836, an American writer published an essay titled "Nature," which put forth the idea of transcendentalism. Can you name the author?

Answer: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson was born in Boston in 1803, the son of a Unitarian minister. He studied at Harvard Divinity School and later became an essayist, poet, and lecturer. Emerson was staunchly antislavery and also wrote to then-President Van Buren to denounce his policy of removing the Cherokee people from their native land, forcing them to walk the Trail of Tears from the eastern seaboard to the dry lands west of the Mississippi River.

In his famous essay, Emerson connected the wild beauty of nature with God's divinity.
