Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ENTERTAINMENT: "Land of Black Gold" was the fifteenth published volume of the comic book series "The Adventures of Tintin," released in 1950. It tells the story of the eponymous adventurous reporter Tintin, as he travels to the Middle East to investigate mysterious anomalies in the world's petroleum supply. In the comic series, what was the name of Tintin's faithful canine companion?

Answer: Snowy

"The Adventures of Tintin" was written by Belgian artist Georges Remi, under his pseudonym, "Hergé." The name "Hergé" was created by Remi's pronunciation of his initials in reverse, G.R. Remi originally started work on "Land of the Black Gold" before WWII, and is set in the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1930's.

When it was finally published in 1950, after the war, the British Mandate had become the State of Israel. It was republished in 1971, and set in the fictional Arab country of Khemed.
2. FOR CHILDREN: Which of the following household family pets uses gills to breathe?

The Yellow River runs 5,464 km (3,395 miles) through China, and empties into the Bohai Sea, an inlet to the Yellow Sea. It is the sixth longest river in the world. Some areas of the Yellow River are so polluted, it is considered insufficient for even agricultural use.

General George Custer would of course meet his end in his famous "last stand" just two years after the gold rush was sparked. The TV series "Deadwood," named after the city in South Dakota's Black Hills, is set during the Black Hills Gold Rush in the 1870's. Black Hills Gold jewelry, famous worldwide and legally made only using gold found in the Black Hills, is unique based on its varied colors.

In creating it, French goldsmith Henri LeBeau infused various amounts of silver into the gold to create green tones, and copper for red and pink.
