Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following artists recorded the number one song "Black and White"?

Answer: Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night's 1972 hit was inspired by the 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown vs Board of Education, which outlawed school segregation. The song included several references of how black and white go together such as the line, "The ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write". Michael Jackson's song was "Black OR White" (1991). INXS did record a song with the same title, but it didn't hit number one. McCartney and Wonder's number one hit was "Ebony and Ivory"(1982) which related the colors of piano keys side by side living in perfect harmony.
2. What term indicates a register that denies someone certain privileges, services or recognition for whatever reason?

Answer: blacklist

An example of blacklisting is when someone is served a restraining order or someone is fired from a job and not allowed to pursue a similar job somewhere else. It also can refer to ostracizing someone from a social circle or if a person exposes a company for poor working conditions, they can be blocked from pursuing work in that industry.
3. Which of the following hit singles was the only one that failed to peak at number one on the US Billboard 100 charts?

Answer: "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane

Grace Slick and her group Jefferson Airplane recorded one of the most controversial songs during the psychedelic sixties. "White Rabbit" peaked at number eight on the US Billboard 100 charts in 1967. It was one of the first songs to use drug references which slipped by the radio censors.

The other songs, "Black Water" (1975), "Paint It Black" (1966) and "White Christmas" (1942) all hit number one on the US Billboard 100 charts.
4. The term "black rain" refers to which of the following dark events?

Answer: the nuclear fallout of the atomic bombs on Japan in 1945

Survivors of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings used this term to describe the aftermath as radioactive ash fell from the sky, like rain. The bombing was done by the United States.
5. Which of the following classic songs is heard during the opening credits of the 2012 hit movie "Dark Shadows", starring Johnny Depp?

Answer: "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues

Based on the classic television soap opera, the film tells the 18th century tale of Barnabas Collins who was cursed and turned into a vampire by a witch to whom he would not give his love. She had him chained into a coffin which was accidentally dug up by contractors in the year 1972. That was the year the Moody Blues hit charted so it was incorporated into the film along with a few other hits from 1972.
6. What phenomenon was used in the classic 1937 Walt Disney film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"?

Answer: Black Mirror

Remember the Evil Queen who chanted the famous line, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all"? The answer came from the spirit within the "black mirror". The mirror, which gave no reflection, was just black thus the name stuck. Witches, sorcerers and wizards supposedly often used the mirror to communicate with spirits.

The feat was referred to as "scrying", and it could be done using a crystal ball or even a puddle of water as well as the famous "black mirror".

Answer: Ajax

Ajax was one of the most popular cleaning products, and in 1972 the company utilised a computerised "White Tornado" coming out of the bottle in its ads. Ajax also later used a jousting medieval knight on horseback, riding around cleaning up boys' muddy shirts like magic, as the jiggle claimed, "Ajax Laundry Detergent is stronger than dirt".
9. Which of the following films tells the story of a woman who marries wealthy men only to murder them and take their money?
