Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are several animals with 'snow' in their names. Which of these winterly animals has the taxonomic name Panthera uncia?

Answer: Snow leopard

To see an actual snow leopard in the wild you must face a daring trek. Snow leopards reside in the high mountains of central Asia, including the Altai, Hindu Kush and Himalayan ranges. This scarce creature has the familiar coat pattern of leopards, with rings and blotches, but its coloring is much more pale than a typical leopard.
2. In the United States we refer to them as 'snow peas', but in Britain they are known alternatively by which of these names?

Answer: Mangetout

The term 'mangetout' comes to English from the French, where it means 'to eat all'. This is a sensible name for the snow pea variety, which can be eaten pod and all!
3. Edgar Snow was an American journalist and author who is most famous for writing the book 'Red Star over China'. With whom was Mr. Snow personal friends?

Answer: Mao Zedong

Edgar Snow lived amongst Mao and his fellow Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members in Yan'an during the late 1930s. Remaining sympathetic to the Chinese Communist cause throughout his life, he continued to visit with Mao and the other CCP leaders up until his death in 1972.
4. Adriana Caselotti was the beautiful voice behind which legendary character of animated film?

Answer: Snow White

Disney recorded several famous firsts for the film Snow White. It was the first film to have an official soundtrack album released for consumer purchase. Snow White was also the first full-length American animated film. Finally, it received the first Oscar for an animated film, a special award that apparently came accompanied by seven small-sized awards (I kid you not!)
5. Which of these familiar 'snow' terms refers to a phenomenon where something grows quickly in intensity or importance?

Answer: Snowball

Here's an example sentence: 'The rumor about his infidelity snowballed in the media until the point that he was forced to hold a press conference to defend his tattered reputation.' To whom I am referring will remain a secret! As you already know, a snowball is also a packed ball of snow used by little boys to hit the girls they admire. It is also the name of a cocktail that includes gin, pernod and half and half.
6. A person in the United States who moves from the north to the south during the winter (and vice-versa during the summer) is sometimes known by what epithet?

Answer: Snowbird

The name Snowbird has also been adopted by folks who love skiing, and hence live in a winterly, mountainous climate during the skiing season (which seems quite the opposite of the above meaning). By the way, there is a ski resort in Utah called Snowbird...I highly recommend its slopes!
7. Which U.S. state's license plates proclaim that the state has 'The Greatest Snow on Earth'?

Answer: Utah

It's true that all of these states are well-known for their excellent ski resorts, but I can attest to the fact that you will find no better powder than in Utah. The source of Utah's powdery snow is suggested to be the 'lake effect'. When cold winter storms blow through northern Utah they are often enhanced by evaporation from the Great Salt Lake, which produces a much more ample snowfall. Several ski resorts along the Wasatch mountain range, including Alta, Snowbird, Park City and Deer Valley, are the beneficiaries of this effect.
8. Let's test your geography a bit. In which country might you find the Snowy River, mate?

Answer: Australia

You might recall the 1982 film 'The Man from Snowy River' (and its 1988 sequel, 'Return to Snowy River'), starring Tom Burlinson and Kirk Douglas (good films, both). You will find the real Snowy River in the southern state of Victoria.
9. One more question to test your geography mettle! Which country's highest mountain peak is called Snowdon?

Answer: Wales

Snowdon (called 'Yr Wyddfa' in Welsh) isn't exactly the tallest mountain in the world (3,560 ft/1,085 meters), but it is the highest mountain in Wales. It is located in the northern Welsh county of Gwynedd, in Snowdonia National Park. It's one of the northernmost peaks of the Cambrian Mountains.
10. A certain Mr. Snow became George W. Bush's second Secretary of the Treasury in February of 2003. What is the first name of this former captain of industry?

Answer: John

John Snow replaced Paul O'Neill in the job of treasury secretary in early 2003 following O'Neill's resignation. Snow had served as chairman of CSX, America's largest railroad company, for 14 years before accepting the top position in the treasury department under Bush.
