Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who is the fairest of them all?'

Answer: Snow White

'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was a 1937 Walt Disney film based on a fairy tale written by the Brothers Grimm. The story told of the Evil Queen, who, in a rage of jealousy, ordered her huntsman to kill her step-daughter, Snow White. But the huntsman spared her life.

In the meantime, the Evil Queen asked, 'Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who is the fairest of them all?', and believing her step-daughter was dead, she was shocked when the mirror replied, 'Snow White'.
2. To rapidly accelerate out of control

Answer: Snowball

Not only is the snowball a ball of packed snow for throwing, or a creamy cocktail, but also a phrase used to describe a situation which grows from small to large in a short space of time. Another similar phrase is 'snowball effect'. For example, 'Her small lie led to a snowball effect until she was eventually caught out.'
3. A small vehicle driven across snow and ice

Answer: Snowmobile

A snowmobile is a motorised vehicle used for travelling over snow. The machine has a small engine, ski-like runners on the front, and tank-like treads on the rear that lightly grip the snow to stop it from sliding. Snowmobiles are used for winter travel in cold regions, but also as a competitive sport with riders often speeding at up to 90 miles per hour.
4. The common name for Galanthus

Answer: Snowdrop

Snowdrop, or Galanthus, is one of the earliest flowers to bloom each year in the northern hemisphere. Clusters of tiny white bell-shaped flowers appear in woods, roadsides and gardens to remind us that spring is just around the corner.
5. The common name for the dark-eyed junco

Answer: Snowbird

The dark-eyed junco is a small sparrow native to North America. At around six inches tall, they have grey plumage and a contrasting white belly, with a pale pink beak. They are known as the snowbird because of their appearance at the start of winter. In popular music, Canadian singer Anne Murray reached the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100 with her 1970 version of 'Snowbird', which included the lyrics;

'Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you.'
6. Sometimes represented as six-sided crystals on Christmas cards

Answer: Snowflake

Snowflakes form when water freezes in the atmosphere, usually when the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If the ground temperature is below freezing, the flakes will settle and heavy blankets of snow are formed. Contrary to popular belief, snowflakes are not white but completely transparent.

The crystals reflect light, and clumped together they appear white under the naked eye.
7. An anthropomorphic figure often seen with a carrot nose and black coal eyes

Answer: Snowman

Made from compacted snow, a snowman is often depicted with human features, including eyes made from coal, nose made from carrots, and arms made from sticks (And not forgetting wool hat and scarf to stop him from getting cold). Building snowmen is a pastime enjoyed by both young and old, yet adults seem to be more competitive by sitting them in relaxed repose on park benches reading a newspaper or standing next to a snow-dog, or snow-cat, or even a snow-monster. Brrrr! and grrrr!
8. A weather condition less severe than a blizzard

Answer: Snowstorm

A blizzard is a snowstorm which continues for a prolonged period of time, usually over three hours. It comes with strong winds resulting in low visibility. A snowstorm is a heavy snowfall with strong winds but classified less strong than a blizzard. Similar to a rainstorm, a snowstorm can cause severe disruption to traffic and people's mobility.
9. A short, broad ski used for sliding downhill

Answer: Snowboard

Snowboarding is a sport which has built in popularity since the 1960s and became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998. Because the sport has evolved, there are now over ten styles of snowboarding including freestyle, boardercross, jibbing and alpine. The snowboards themselves are made from fibreglass and wood, and the widths range between six to 12 inches.
10. A spherical ornament containing loose white particles

Answer: Snow globe

The snow globe appeared in France during the 19th century as they were first showcased at the 1878 Paris Universal Exposition. But it was Austrian inventor Erwin Perzy who obtained the first patent in 1900. Made from blown glass and filled with water, he added semolina flakes then a miniature Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary.

Modern snow globes are made from plastic and filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze (dangerous to cats and dogs if they break). Still loved by millions of people around the world, snow globes depict nativity scenes, snow-capped mountains, and Santa Claus with his reindeer. You can even purchase non-festive snow globes featuring 'I Love NY' or 'My Little Pony'.
