Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a Yellow-shafted Flicker?

Answer: Bird

This is a large wood-pecker which can be found on the eastern part of north America. It has splashes of yellow here and there on its wings and tail.
2. On which southern continent can the Thorny Yellowwood tree be found?

Answer: Australia

This pretty tree lives in the rainforests of the states of New South Wales and Queensland. It grows to approximately fifteen metres (around forty-six feet) in height, has a very rough bark, and dark green, glossy leaves. When it flowers from October to November, its flowers are a pink or red colour with a yellow centre - and insects go wild about their nectar at this time.

It bears fruit from February to May. The wood from this tree is a dark yellow colour, hence the name, and it is used for decorative pieces.
3. Some of the North American plant, Goldenrod, can be consumed as food.

Answer: True

Indeed it can. Some of these plants have parts that can be cooked and eaten, others are used to make tea, and honey can be obtained from others. It's rather a pretty little plant but appears to be unappreciated for the most part. However it can cause allergies in some people such as florists if handled too frequently, and is often blamed (incorrectly) for causing hayfever, when sneezers confuse it with Ragweed.

It's pollinated by insects rather than the wind as its pollen is heavy and sticky. Wow, here's an interesting fact: Goldenrod also produces rubber, and Thomas Edison produced rubber from it that was resilient and lasted up to fifty years! Henry Ford backed up his friend's research in this area by making tyres for one of his model T Fords from Edison's rubber - which he then presented to Edison as a gift. Edison handed over his findings to the government on Goldenrod rubber just before he died, but nothing further was done about it.
4. What is yellowcake?

Answer: Concentrated uranium oxide

This product is obtained from uranium ore. It is used, not only as a fuel in nuclear reactors, but also utilised in the manufacture of ghastly nuclear weapons.
5. What is added to fireworks to make them yellow when they explode?

Answer: Sodium

Pyrotechnic displays of fireworks grow more and more impressive and dazzling with each passing year. They were originally invented in China in the seventh century for the purpose of scaring away evil spirits. Sodium has a mix of orange and yellow tint in its makeup.
6. The Indian oil and watercolour paint is said to be produced from the urine of which animal?

Answer: Cow

More specifically, it is said to be produced from the urine of cows that have been given mango leaves to eat. Poor things. Still, it's as good a claim as any other. Today however, this naturally produced colour has been replaced by synthetically manufactured colours.
7. Which ancient class of Chinese people were the only people allowed the use of the colour yellow?

Answer: The Imperial family

This was particularly so with members of the family of the first emperor of China, Huang De. He has gone down in China's history as the "Yellow Emperor". The colour yellow was used in the manufacturer of the family's clothing and in the construction of their buildings.
8. What was the brightly coloured yellow object the Beatles sang about?

Answer: Submarine

"Yellow Submarine" won the Ivor Novello Award for the highest number of sales in Britain in the year it was issued. There's no sinister connations ascribed to this song, as with others that the Beatles produced, and which, incidentally, have been hotly denied.

It was written by Paul McCartney specifically for children and basically is the story of an old sailor telling a group of children where he lived. The song was referred to by the Beatles as "Paul's baby".
9. Psychics who do aura readings ascribe which cerebral characteristic to people with yellow auras?

Answer: Intellectual acumen

Psychics particularly like to class scientists as having auras of this colour. Somehow I just can't picture a group of scientists happily nodding their heads at the notion of aura readings having any credibility, no matter how flattering they may be, can you?
10. What is a yellow dog Democrat?

Answer: A voter vehemently opposed to Republicans

The origin of this interesting term lies in southern voters, in the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century. These people would always vote for a Democrat no matter how bad a politician he was because of the aftermath of the Civil War. Today the term has come to mean a totally committed Democrat who would rather "vote for a yellow dog rather than vote for a Republican".
