Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What county contained the most people in the 2000 Census?

Answer: Los Angeles County (CA)

L.A. County was by far the largest with 9,519,338 people. Cook was second with 5,376,741, Harris was third with 3,400,578, and New York County (Manhattan) was 17th with 1,537,195.
2. Each New York City borough is also a county. Which of the five did not contain at least one million people, and thus didn't rank in the nation's Top 35?

Answer: Richmond County (Staten Island)

Staten Island was the smallest borough with a population of 443,728, while Brooklyn was the largest at 2,465,326. New York County, synonymous with Manhattan, is the fifth borough and is not included above.
3. Of the top ten largest counties in the U.S. in 2000, how many were located in California, the most populous state?

Answer: 3

Los Angeles #1, Orange #5, & San Diego #6. However, based on recent estimates, Riverside & San Bernardino Counties are closing in fast, and could give California half of the Top 10 by the 2010 census.
4. Based on the 2004 Census Estimate, only one county from the Census 2000 Top 10 is losing population. Which one is it?

Answer: Cook County (IL)

Chicago's Cook County decreased from 5,376,741 to 5,327,777 from the 2000 Census to the 2004 estimate. Wayne County in Detroit has also lost population, but it no longer resides in the Top 10.
5. Three counties which sat just short of one million people in the 2000 census have eclipsed the mark as of 2004 estimates. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Erie County (NY)

Erie County, home to Buffalo, is actually going in the opposite direction. In 1980, it contained over one million people, but has been losing people steadily since. In the 2004 Census Estimate, Erie was down to 936,318.
6. Boston, MA was located in a county containing 1 million people in 2000.

Answer: False

Boston itself is located in Suffolk County, which contained 689,807 people in 2000. However, Middlesex County, home to some Boston suburbs such as Cambridge, Everett, & Lexington, did have a population of 1,465,396.
7. Which county that did not even exist in the 1900 Census has grown exponentially in the last 100 years, and has cracked the 2000 Top 20?

Answer: Clark County (NV)

Interestingly, all of these counties did not exist in the 1900 Census, but Clark County, home to Las Vegas, was the only "new" county that managed to make the Top 20 in 2000. Its ever-growing population in our most recent census was 1,375,765.
8. Many counties from all over the United States have the same name. Which two same-name counties from different states had the largest combined population in the 2000 Census?

Answer: Orange County (CA & FL)

A total of six "same-name" counties appear on the Census 2000 Top 100 list. These include the four from this question, along with Essex County (MA & NJ) and Jefferson County (AL & KY). With a total population of 3,742,633, the Oranges (home to Anaheim & Orlando) come in first, ranking 5th & 45th respectively.
9. In the 2000 Census, how many states had more than one county with a population of over 1 million?

Answer: 7

California (8), New York (6), Texas (4), Florida (3), Ohio (2), Michigan (2), Pennsylvania (2). These seven states held 27 out of the 34 millionaire counties in 2000.
10. Finally, what was the largest county named after a U.S. President in the 2000 Census?

Answer: Monroe County (NY)

Home to Rochester, NY, Monroe County was named for the US President James Monroe, and was home to 735,343 people in 2000.
