Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which modern Chinese leader came up with the idea of 'political tutelage'?

Answer: Sun Yatsen

Within his concept of political tutelage, or xunzheng, Dr. Sun describes China as an underdeveloped country that is not ready for democracy. Thus a period of authoritarianism is needed in order to teach the concept of democracy to the people. This idea was coopted by Chiang Kai-shek, Lee Kwan Yew and others...and seems to be the line of the Chinese Communists today.
2. What was the name of the military academy at which Chiang Kai-shek served as first commandant?

Answer: Whampoa

Whampoa is known as 'Huangpu' in Mandarin Chinese.
3. Lizhou, Shoujuan and Changjuan are all forms of what item related to Chinese art and literature?

Answer: Scroll

Lizhou is a hanging scroll, Shoujuan is a hand scroll and the Changjuan is the 'long scroll', presented horizontally. Great calligraphic and art works are most often presented on scrolls.
4. Who was the great literati of the Han dynasty that was the key figure in establishing Confucianism as the state cult philosophy?

Answer: Dong Zhongshu

He worked primarily during the illustrious reign of Han Wudi.
5. Mao emerged as the single most important leader of the Chinese Communist Party after what conference in 1935?

Answer: Zunyi

During the Zunyi conference of early 1935 Mao criticized the 'return Bolsheviks' (Soviet trained Chinese Communists) for allowing Chiang Kai-shek's forces to drive the Communists out of Jiangxi and following blindly the orders of Stalin.
6. What is the Chinese term for filial piety, the cardinal principle of Confucian ethics?

Answer: Xiao

Filial piety is the basis of the five hierarchical social relationships in China, i.e. father-son, husband-wife, emperor-subject, older brother-younger brother and friend-friend.
7. Dao or Tao is normally translated into English as what?

Answer: The Way

Dao or Tao, depending on the spelling you prefer, means a lot of things to a lot of people...a very evanescent concept. However, people normally translate it as 'the way'.
8. Who was the last emperor of the Tang Dynasty, ruling from 904-907 A.D.?

Answer: Aidi

The Tang Dynasty was toppled by the warlord Zhu Quanchong in 907 A.D.
9. Which of the following was not one of the 'Nanbeichao' or 'North and South Dynasties'?

Answer: Shu Han

The Shu Han was one of the Three Kingdoms, immortalized in the work of the same name.
10. Which of the following is not an English title for the classic Chinese novel 'Shui Hu Zhuan'?

Answer: Story of the Stone

This novel of the Ming Dynasty is virtually required reading for every Chinese person of school age. The authorship of this fantastic work has been attributed to Shi Nai'an and to Luo Guanzhong, although many modern scholars suggest these claims are spurious. The 'Shui Hu Zhuan' is roughly the Chinese version of Robin Hood.
