Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I see plenty of high mountains, the Pyrenees, plenty of olive trees, plenty of Moorish monuments and large vineyards producing many types of wines with which to make delicious sangria. Where am I?

Answer: Spain

The Pyrenees divide Spain from France and the Spanish landscape is rich in olive trees. Spanish olive oil is famous in the world and essential to Spanish cuisine.
The North African Muslims, known in Spain as Moors, spent eight centuries in Spain and left beautiful mosques, palaces and fortresses in the country. The Spanish fought very hard against them to recuperate their freedom in what is called the "Reconquista" and finally expelled the last Moorish king during the reign of the Catholic monarchs in 1492.
2. I see plenty of handmade rugs, possibly the finest in the world, plenty of mosques with their minarets lit every evening like the Hagia Sophia. I just crossed a bridge and I am in another continent. I am in the biggest city of this country. What country am I visiting?

Answer: Turkey

Minarets are features of a mosque, tall spires with a balcony from which to call people to prayer. They are illuminated at dusk. Most mosques I have seen have four minarets, but I understand mosques may have a different number. The Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul. Originally a Greek Orthodox church, its name comes from the Greek translation of Holy Wisdom. Later, it became a mosque and today, it is a museum.

Turkish rugs are extremely fine rugs, very soft to the touch, and the finest have several hundred stitches per square inch. The more stitches per square inch, the higher the price of a rug.
Istanbul is in both Europe and Asia. The strait called the Dardanelles connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and divides Istanbul.
3. I see plenty of desert sands with camels roaming around and plenty of magnificent monuments built over 5,000 years ago. This land was home to two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, one of them still standing. It is the land of plenty as far as history is concerned. What is the name of this land?

Answer: Egypt

Egypt is entirely inside the Sahara Dessert, but it has fertile areas by the Nile River and Delta.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one standing of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The other Wonder was the Lighthouse of Alexandria, another Egyptian city.
The Great Pyramid was built more than 4500 years ago and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, 289 years before the birth of Christ.
4. This country is the Land of Plenty as far as Renaissance art and history, but it is also rich in monuments from ancient times, and many of them related to Christianity. It is the home of tall mountains called the Alps and the Apennines. What Land of Plenty is this?

Answer: Italy

Rome, Italy's capital, was the center of a civilization that started several centuries before Christ and gained control of most of Europe, northern Africa and parts of Asia. In Rome we find many monuments from those times like the Colosseum and the Forum. It was the city of Florence which became the birthplace of the Renaissance, a "rebirth" of classic art and knowledge and the end of the Dark Ages.

The Apennines are a mountain range traversing Italy from north to south and the Alps are in the north of the country. The Alps, the most extensive mountain chain in Europe, are shared by France, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
5. This country, located in Asia, has plenty of cows walking around in the countryside but also in city streets, parks, neighborhoods, everywhere. Nevertheless, this land has extraordinary and beautiful monuments. One of them is possibly the best recognized building in the world, a tomb made for the beloved wife of a Mughal emperor. Where am I?

Answer: India

In India, the cow is considered sacred because it gives dairy products very necessary to Hindu's diet and because of its gentle nature which corresponds to the non-violence belief of the Hindu religion.

The Taj Mahal is the tomb Shah Jahan built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal who bore him 13 children. Its building started in 1632 and today, it is visited by over three million people every year.
6. This is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. This is the land of plenty of fields planted with sugar cane and tobacco plants. There are palm trees everywhere and tropical music is played wherever I go. It is a pity many of the citizens of this land had to flee communism after 1959. What Land of Plenty is this?

Answer: Cuba

Cuba was the first country in the world to export sugar but Castro's economy has changed the production to one third of what it was before the 1960s. The tobacco industry has not changed much and Cuba has the second-largest area in the world planted with tobacco plants.
Cuba is the largest island of the Antilles, an archipelago located north of the Caribbean Sea and bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and northeast.

The language spoken in Cuba is Spanish as it was ruled by Spain until 1902, when it gained independence.
7. I see tulips, cheese markets, many bicycles and many canals. I hear these people "steal" land from the sea to make "polders". They have to pump water out of their fields because they have areas under sea level. Do you know the name of this land?

Answer: The Netherlands

The Netherlands is a small and beautiful country bordered by Belgium, Germany and the North Sea. Half of the country was created by the Dutch who reclaimed land from the sea, enclosing the area and building dikes. Water has to be extracted on a regular basis or the areas below sea level will flood. In the past, windmills were used to pump water from behind the dikes and sent back to the sea, but today, a very sophisticated system is used instead. The remaining windmills, with the exception of a few, are decorative. The fields are always wet but are excellent for agriculture.

The narrow streets and overcrowded cities have made bicycles a very popular way of transportation. The Netherlands produce world famous cheeses, of which Edam and Gouda are best known.
8. This land has plenty of Pampas; grass covered plains where cattle are abundant. The Pampas has its own cowboys they call gauchos. I think this place is known for its tangos and because it is the largest Spanish speaking country in its continent, South America. Where am I?

Answer: Argentina

Argentina is a large country best known for its pampas and their cattle, making Argentina a top producer of meat. It is also known for the Iguazu Falls, its glaciers and its lakes. And, of course, its soccer team, won the World Cup twice in the 20th century.
Argentina is the 8th-largest country in the world, the second-largest in South America and the largest Spanish speaking country. Its capital is Buenos Aires.
9. I see plenty of beautiful blue lakes, plenty of high mountains (the Alps), and many balconies with geranium baskets hanging from them. This is the land of legendary William Tell, the land of peace and political neutrality, the land with plenty of stores selling watches and all sooo clean! What is the name of this land?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland is bordered by France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Italy and Austria. The Alps occupy most of the country's territory. It is a landlocked country but has a good number of lakes, some of them very large like Lake Geneva, Lake Constance, Lake Maggiore and many others.
Switzerland has been considered the best place in the world to live because of its excellent economy, its lack of pollution and crime, inexpensive education, great transportation system, beautiful landscapes and its political neutrality.
10. I just arrived in this country in the Southern Hemisphere, off the continental African coast. It Is definitely the Land of Plenty of very exotic animals not found anywhere else. There are many different lemurs of which the"aye aye" is the strangest. And the fossa is an animal hard to imagine, as well as the flying fox, the Brookesia chameleon and the Uroplatus gecko. Where am I?

Answer: Madagascar

Madagascar is an island country by the southeast coast of Africa. It used to be a French colony so, besides Malagasy, French is also spoken. The strange variety of the wild life in this island is due to the fact that it has been isolated for millions of years from the rest of the world. Lemurs are primates who live on trees.

They have huge eyes, long snouts and very long tails. The fossa is an arboreal member of the mongoose family. Its body looks like the body of a cat with the snout of a dog. The flying fox is the world largest bat with a wing span of three feet.

The Brookesia chameleon is the smallest chameleon and can fit on a human fingernail. Uroplatus geckos have flat tails.
