Beijing literally means northern capital, Nanjing the southern capital. Nanjing was the capital for several dynasties. Nanjing was the original capital of Ming Dynasty from 1368 to 1403. Ming third emperor, Yongle moved the capital to Beijing in 1403 when the imperial palace at Forbidden City was completed.

In 1931, Nanjing became the capital of Republic of China until 1937 when the city was captured by the Japanese invaders. On 1 October 1949, Beijing was declared by Mao Zedong as the capital of the People's Republic of China.
