Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What river, headquartered in Oakland County, travels through three other counties before having its mouth in Monroe County?

Answer: Huron River

The Huron River, named after the Huron Indians, starts in Oakland, then travels through Livingston, Washtenaw, Wayne, and Monroe counties before ending. The river is about 130 miles long and passes through 13 state parks, game and recreation areas.
2. Named for one of the largest cities in Michigan, which river connects Lake Erie to Lake St. Clair?

Answer: Detroit River

The Detroit River is many things, including part of the boarder between the U.S. and Canada. It separates Detroit and Windsor. The river flows for 24 nautical miles, or 28 regular miles. The entire length of the river serves as a border between the two countries.
3. Also called a creek, what river is named after the French word for bark?

Answer: Ecorse River

The original French settlers in the region named the 18.8 mile river, Rivière aux Écorces, which was later changed into the Ecorse River. Because it's so short, locals also refer to it as the Ecorse Creek.

The river runs through the city of the same name, and continues in the area known as "Downriver" which is in the southern park of Wayne County.
4. What river joins into the Detroit River near Zug Island?

Answer: River Rouge

The River Rouge (which also has a city named after it) runs for 127 miles through Metro-Detroit. It joins with the Detroit River at the boundary between the cities of River Rouge and Detroit, right at Zug Island.

Zug Island is man made and is used for heavy industry.
5. Which river was named for the grape plants growing along its banks?

Answer: River Raisin

The French word for grape is raisin, so when French settlers moved into the region they named it the river of grapes, or the River Raisin. It is the only river in the state where the word river comes before the name. All of the others follow the more traditional naming convention.
The river runs for about 139 miles.
6. One of the shortest rivers in the region, what river runs along the Michigan-Ohio border?

Answer: Ottawa River

The Ottawa River is only about 20 miles long. Only about five miles of the river run in Michigan (four miles at one end and one mile at the other end), while the rest run through Ottawa Hills and Toledo in Ohio. The river empties into Lake Erie. It is also known as the Tenmile Creek.

It is one of two rivers (at least partially) in Ohio called the Ottawa River, the other is in Fulton County.
7. What river is formed by the confluence of the Tittabawassee and Shiawassee Rivers?

Answer: Saginaw River

The Saginaw River runs for about 22.5 miles, just south of the city of Saginaw. The river flows north through Bay City and into Lake Huron. The fully inland river is navigable by large boats and is used for hauling freight.
8. Samaquasebing, Assemoqua, and Assymoquoasibee are three alternate names for what river?

Answer: Tobacco River

All three Indian names refer to the river as the "Tobacco-woman River" when translated into English, hence the modern name of the river was shortened to Tobacco River.

It runs 12.7 miles through Gladwin and Midland. It empties into the Tittabawassee River.
9. With its mouth on Thunder Bay, what short river is nothing short of angelic?

Answer: Devils River

The river is only 2.4 miles long. It is located mostly in Alpena County, just south of the city of Alpena. It runs near the highway US-23. An Ojibwe village was once located near the mouth of the river, but was abandoned and eventually totally destroyed over the years.
The "angelic" clue should have helped tip off the answer to this one.
10. Which river flows into one of the Great Lakes in a city with a population of less than 3,000?

Answer: Trout River

If you can't tell from the river names, fishing is a big part of life in Michigan. The Trout River runs 8.5 miles through Presque Isle County. It runs through Rogers City and empties into Lake Huron.

Population data (2,827) was taken from the 2010 U.S. Census.
