Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the places I've always wanted to visit is the Laxey Wheel. To which island, off the west coast of Britain, will I have to travel to see it?

Answer: Isle of Man

The wheel was originally built in 1854 to pump water from the Great Laxey Mines, which produced lead, copper, silver and zinc. The mine closed in 1929 and the wheel and site were acquired by the Isle of Man government in 1965. Following restoration work, management was transferred to Manx National Heritage, with the wheel becoming one of the major tourist attractions on the island.

The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea and is a British Crown Dependancy with its own government, known as the Tynwald.
2. If I've taken the 'Magical Mystery Tour' and seen Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane en route, which big city have I visited?

Answer: Liverpool

The 'Magical Mystery Tour' takes visitors around Liverpool to visit places associated with The Beatles. It shows you the houses where John, Paul and George grew up (and Ringo's, at one time, although that was scheduled for demolition in 2011), and where Brian Epstein lived.

It ends at the rebuilt Cavern Club in Mathew Street which recreated the arches and vaults of the original venue which had closed in 1973.
3. If I wish to visit Goodrich Castle, look at the Mappa Mundi in the cathedral and visit the home of Bulmer's cider, in which English county will I find all three?

Answer: Herefordshire

Goodrich Castle is situated about five miles from Ross-on-Wye, near the beauty spot of Symonds Yat. Building of it began in the late eleventh century, and much damage was sustained during the English Civil War although the ruins are extensive and well worth a visit. Bulmer's cider was founded in 1887 and became part of the Heineken group of companies. Among its brands are Strongbow cider.

The Mappi Mundi is a map of the world believed to date back to the fourteenth century and showing Jerusalem at the centre. Since 1996 the map has been displayed in a purpose built library, and a collection of chained books, adjacent to Hereford Cathedral.
4. Situated in Gwynedd, North Wales, is a village built in an Italianate style and which is famous for being used for filming of the television series 'The Prisoner'. What is the name of the village?

Answer: Portmeirion

The village is built on the estuary of the river Dwyryd, and is around two miles from Porthmadog. Building began in 1925 and the village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. It has been said that the design was based on the town of Portofino in Italy, although Williams-Ellis denied this, saying only that he wished to recreate a Mediterranean feeling to the village. 'The Prisoner' starred Patrick McGoohan and became a cult series when it was originally shown on television in Britain between 1967 and 1968. All the places given as options are located in Gwynedd.
5. Stonehenge in Wiltshire is world famous for its standing stones, but there is another henge in the same county which I can also visit. Where is it situated?

Answer: Avebury

The outer stone circle at Avebury is larger than Stonehenge and is the largest in Britain. It is also the oldest one known to exist in the world. It is believed that the circle originally consisted of around 98 stones, with 27 still remaining. Within the outer circle are two smaller circles, originally of 27 and 29 stones.

More information can be found on avebury-stones.co.uk, if you are interested. As Avebury is only twenty miles away from Stonehenge it is easy to visit both in one day, and Wiltshire also offers Salisbury Cathedral, which has the tallest spire in the United Kingdom.
6. To visit the highest mountain in the British Isles will mean a trip to which country?

Answer: Scotland

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain, at 1344 metres and can be found at the western end of the Grampian range of mountains, near Fort William. It is said that more than 100,000 people reach its summit each year. The next highest mountain in the British Isles is Snowdon in Wales, at 1085 metres, which has a railway running to the summit for lazy people like me. England's highest point is Scafell Pike at 978 metres and Northern Ireland's is Slieve Donard at 850 metres.
7. The Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, was built to house an exhibition to celebrate the start of the third millennium. The building is now used for entertainment, including pop concerts, and is known by what name?

Answer: The O2

The Dome was open for the whole of 2000 and had displays such as 'Body', 'Mind', 'Money' and 'Living Island' among many others. The event was a financial disaster as it failed to attract enough visitors to meet the costs. The Dome was renamed 'The O2' in 2005 and underwent major redevelopment.

It officially opened in 2007 with a concert by Bon Jovi, and has now established itself as a major venue for concerts, shows and sporting events such as tennis, wrestling and gymnastics.
8. By taking a ferry to the Republic of Ireland, I can visit County Kerry and drive around a well known scenic route known by which of these names?

Answer: Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry can be found in the south west of Ireland, although its official name is the Iveragh Peninsula. A trip around the peninsula provides a glimpse of everything that Ireland has to offer, taking in several towns, including Kenmare and Killarney and the mountains called McGillycuddy Reeks. Visits can also be made to seaside towns such as Kells and Sneem. Killarney National Park, with its lakes, can also be found within the Ring.
9. The leisure area known as the Norfolk Broads is found in which part of England?

Answer: East

The Broads are a series of rivers and other waterways, primarily situated in Norfolk and extending into the neighbouring county of Suffolk to the south. Until the 1960s the waterways were assumed to be natural, but it was then proved that they had been formed by flooding into the excavations made for the extraction of peat.

The area is now primarily used for boating with vessels available for hire from many businesses. Norfolk itself is bordered by the North Sea to the north and east, with its northwestern border being The Wash, where King John was reputed to have lost the Crown Jewels.
10. The giant sculpture called 'The Angel of the North' can be found close to which of these places?

Answer: Gateshead

The sculpture is made of steel and was designed by Antony Gormley. It stands 20 metres high with its wingspan being 54 metres across and was erected in 1998 after four years of work. The cost of around one million pounds sterling was met primarily by funding from the National Lottery.

Although it caused a great deal of controversy at the time, the Angel has become an iconic image for the north east of England. Among Gormley's other works are 'Another Place', a series of life size figures on Crosby Beach (not far from Liverpool) and 'Event Horizon', also consisting of figures, which has been shown in London and New York.
