Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was born in Bournemouth, which is in Dorset. Prior to 1974, it was in another county. Which one?

Answer: Hampshire

Many county boundaries were redrawn in 1974 and Bournemouth was placed in Dorset following this reorganisation. I still describe myself as having been born in Hampshire. The other counties are all in the south and west of England.
2. I was brought up in Gloucestershire, which is the home of which of these forests?

Answer: Forest of Dean

The official name is the Royal Forest of Dean. Areas of the forest were reserved for hunting by royalty, including the Normans and Tudors. The forest was kept stocked with deer and wild boar, which can still be found in the modern era. The New Forest is in Hampshire, Sherwood Forest is in Nottinghamshire and Savernake Forest is in Wiltshire.
3. I have worked in both Gloucester and Hereford, which are two of the three cities where the 'Three Choirs Festival' is held annually. Which is the third?

Answer: Worcester

The festival was established in the early eighteenth century and is based in one of these three cities each year in August. It is a classical music festival, featuring orchestral works as well as choral. Malvern and Tewkesbury are not cities.
4. I lived in Birmingham for a few years. The city has two main universities. Birmingham University is one of them, but what is the other one called?

Answer: Aston

Aston has the benefit of being within walking distance of the city centre, whereas Birmingham is in Edgbaston on the outskirts. John Moores is in Liverpool, Brunel is in Uxbridge, Middlesex and Heriot-Watt is in Edinburgh.
5. My daughter was born in Southmead Hospital, which is a suburb of which city? (Concorde was built here, which might help if you're unsure).

Answer: Bristol

Concorde was built at Filton, not far from Southmead. I was lucky enough to see it fly during testing and again when I lived near Farnborough, when it visited the airshow. Bristol has many interesting attractions, including Clifton Suspension bridge, the zoo and Brunel's ship SS Great Britain.
6. I spent many enjoyable holidays in Solva, which is in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. What is the Welsh name for this county?

Answer: Sir Benfro

This part of Wales is often called 'little England beyond Wales' as there are fewer speakers of the Welsh language in the area than in the rest of the country. Sir Fynwy is Monmouthshire, Powys is in mid-Wales and Ynys Mon is the island of Anglesey.
7. I also lived in Devon for a while, and worked in the county town. In which of these places was I?

Answer: Exeter

Plymouth is the largest city in Devon. Torbay, which includes Torquay, and Plymouth are unitary authorities and are independent of Devon for administrative purposes. Devon is well known for its seaside resorts which are on both the north and south coasts of the county.
8. Another favourite holiday area of mine is the Lake District. Which of these is the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park?

Answer: Ravenglass

Ravenglass is the terminus of the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, which runs up to Boot through beautiful countryside. Grasmere is near Windermere, and is probably best known as William Wordsworth's home. Keswick is near Derwentwater and Coniston is on Coniston Water. The Lake District is also where Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, is situated.
9. In 2009, I visited an abbey which is situated on a cliff, overlooking the sea and harbour. It was also the inspiration for a well-known book. Which of the following abbeys fits the description?

Answer: Whitby

Whitby is the setting for parts of Bram Stoker's book 'Dracula'. It is also famous for jet (popularised for use in jewellery by Queen Victoria when she was in mourning) and as the place where Captain James Cook began his seafaring life as well as the abbey.

It is situated in North Yorkshire and is the only one of the choices to be on the coast. Tintern is in the Wye Valley, near Chepstow, Monmouthshire. Battle Abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings by William the Conqueror and Glastonbury Abbey, reputed to be where King Arthur is buried, is in Somerset.
10. I now live in Wirral, in the north west of England. One of the towns here is Birkenhead, which is best known for which industry?

Answer: Shipbuilding

Birkenhead is situated on the west bank of the river Mersey, opposite Liverpool. The shipyard is still in operation, although now mostly for repair and maintenance work. Both the ferry and one of the road tunnels to Liverpool leave from Birkenhead. It is also famous for its public park, which is reputed to be the model for New York's Central Park.
