Answer: Rochester

Founded in 1817 under its original name of Rochesterville, Rochester is situated just south of Lake Ontario. The Erie Canal originally ran through the city, before being re-routed to the south. The Eastman Kodak film company was founded there in 1888, leading to the "Image Center" moniker.

Answer: Reading

Reading is the county seat of Berks County, which itself was named after Berkshire in England. The city was built on the iron and railroad industries. Reading is located northwest of Philadelphia, on the banks of the Schuylkill River.

Answer: Rapid City

Incorporated in 1882, Rapid City, South Dakota, is named after Rapid Creek, a tributary of the Cheyenne River. The city was founded by gold miners who sought their fortunes in the adjacent Black Hills.

Answer: Racine

First settled in 1834, Racine, Wisconsin, was originally called Fort Gilbert. The city is home to a large number of Danish-Americans. Horlicks was invented in the city in 1887 by William Horlick.

Answer: Richmond

The state capital of Virginia, Richmond was founded in 1737. The state capital was moved there from Williamsburg in 1780. Richmond was capital of the Confederacy until April, 1865, when Ulysses S. Grant captured it for the Union.

Ruston is the parish seat of Lincoln Parish (Louisiana is unique among the 50 states of the USA in having parishes rather than counties). Louisiana Tech was founded there in 1894, under its original name of the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana. The city's economy and cultural activities mostly revolve around the college.
