Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the Republic, before Sulla (138 BC-78 BC) increased the number of the Senate, it consisted of how many?

Answer: 300

300 was the number of the Senate before being changed by Sulla (to 600) and by Caesar (to 900).
2. Who led the slaves' revolt of 72 BC?

Answer: Spartacus

The slave revolt of 72 BC was led by Spartacus, and was subsequently quashed by Crassus, who then proceeded to crucify the 6000 slaves involved in the revolt.
3. Who was NOT part of the Second Triumvirate?

Answer: Cassius

Octavian, Lepidus, and Antony formed the Second Triumvirate. Cassius was one of the major contributors to Caesar's murder, along with Brutus.
4. Who was credited with forming the first professional army of Rome?

Answer: Gaius Marius

Marius is credited with the formation of the first professional army of Rome, for he began to recruit the poor into the army, and offered them spoils of war and a permanent job. This subsequently saw military loyalty in the hands of the generals, not the state.
5. Who instituted proscriptions against Cicero?

Answer: Marc Antony

Marc Antony, upon forming the Second Triumvirate, created a new set of proscriptions which listed those who could be killed for reward. Cicero was among those listed because he had publicly spoken out against Antony in favour of Octavian. Cicero had not counted on their eventual alliance.
6. Vergil was credited with writing what famous work?

Answer: Aeneid

Vergil's "Aeneid" consists of 12 books, the first six modelled on Homer's "Odyssey" and the last six modelled on Homer's "Iliad". The work is incomplete, for Vergil died in the making, but Augustus had it published anyway.
7. The founder of Carthage, the great enemy of Rome, was a woman.

Answer: True

Carthage was founded by a woman named Dido, whom the later Romans disrespected greatly.
8. The Curse of Dido predicted that an avenger would rise from Carthage against Rome. Who was it?

Answer: Hannibal

Dido, upon learning of Aeneas' departure from Carthage, grieved for her lost love and uttered the Curse of Dido before her death.
9. The mother of Romulus and Remus was ...?

Answer: Rhea Silvia

Dido was the founder of Carthage, Poppaea Sabina was the second wife of Emperor Nero, and Julia Agrippina (better known as Agrippina the Younger) was the sister of Caligula and mother of Nero.
10. Who was the author of the 142-book "History of Rome"?

Answer: Livy

Livy's extensive "History of Rome" is considered historically unreliable due to the fact that he was an "armchair historian", meaning he relied solely on the works and words of others and did not do any investigating for himself. Of the 142 books written, only 35 survived through to today.
