Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After his surrender, a Federal Court indicted Robert E. Lee for treason. Which well known Union general threatened to resign if the charges were not dropped?

Answer: U.S. Grant

At the surrender at Appomattox, Grant had promised Lee that no officers would be prosecuted for treason. After President Lincoln was assassinated some Northerns wanted revenge against the South. He threatened to resign if charges were not dropped and Johnson backed down.
2. After the war who was the only Confederate general to join the Republican party?

Answer: James Longstreet

Longstreet was a friend of U.S. Grant before the war. He renewed the friendship after the war was over. Eventually he joined the Republican Party. This turned many southerners against him.
