Question 1 of 10
1. Our march begins on November 15, 1864. The citizens where we were had recently witnessed a large battle and had undergone a four month siege. We leave behind the large railroad hub 'smoldering and in ruins' (as stated in Sherman's memoirs) as we head eastward. What city did we just vacate? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Our next stop on Sherman's march is a town near the Alcovy River. Gen. Garrard had already come through in July of 1864, and destroyed many of the industrial sites. We camped out on November 18 in the grounds of Mt. Pleasant Plantation which was later to become Georgia Perimeter College. What town are we resting in? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. We learn we are sparing the next stop on Gen. Sherman's March to the Sea! It's not because it is 'The Prettiest Small Town in America' or because it is the Macon county seat. It is because Sherman knows the Senator who lives here. Where are we? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The next town we pass through quickly but we do burn the tannery during our march. It is the home of Joel Chandler Harris who is working in a small newspaper here during 1864 but would later write the beloved 'Uncle Remus' fables. What town is that we are hustling through? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Our fifth stop is the capital of Georgia in 1864. Because of its significance to the Confederacy, Sherman allowed more destruction than usual. The troops poured sorghum and molasses down the pipes of the organ at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. What city did we just loot during the Scorched Earth march? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Our next stop occurs because we get in a small battle in the town. The fight is made up of two skirmishes that occur on November 25-26 of 1864. The battle is between our regiments and that of Joe Wheeler who massacred some Union prisoners. Sherman told his troops to burn the Courthouse afterward since they fired upon his troops from the portico. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The next stop on our march is a town just the other side of the Ogeechee River. While Sherman's engineers rebuilt bridges, some of the Army crossed the river and entered this town. They burned down the Courthouse and jail but left standing The Market House (Georgia's only remaining slave market). What town did we just come across? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. As we head through the rough terrain on our march, we hear that we will not be bothered with the Confederate cavalry of Wheeler much more. That is because just to the North of us, in Burke County Georgia, a battle ensued on December 4th 1864 that pitted USA Cavalry under Kirkpatrick against CSA Cavalry under Wheeler. The battle destroyed most of the town and kept our march going smoothly. What town? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. We are almost at the end of the march but we stop in this town along the way. It houses a prison camp to house Union soldiers called Camp Lawton. The Union prisoners have been evacuated but Sherman orders the POW camp and surrounding railroads to be destroyed. What town are we in? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. After a very long march of 15-40 miles per day, we reach our destination. We had a brief skirmish at Fort McAllister and then we occupied the coastal city. Sherman even presented the city to Lincoln as a Christmas gift in 1864. Where are we? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our march begins on November 15, 1864. The citizens where we were had recently witnessed a large battle and had undergone a four month siege. We leave behind the large railroad hub 'smoldering and in ruins' (as stated in Sherman's memoirs) as we head eastward. What city did we just vacate?

Answer: Atlanta, GA

Before setting off to the East, Sherman ordered that Atlanta's military resources and railroad lines be destroyed. The fires burned out of control and most of the city was in ruins.

Answer: Covington, GA

Sherman wrote in his letters that "It took from 9 a.m. to late in the evening for the entire column to march through the town." The troops kept up their foraging from the countryside but did not burn the large antebellum house on the 6,000 acre Mt. Pleasant estate.
3. We learn we are sparing the next stop on Gen. Sherman's March to the Sea! It's not because it is 'The Prettiest Small Town in America' or because it is the Macon county seat. It is because Sherman knows the Senator who lives here. Where are we?

Answer: Madison, GA

Joshua Hill, known to Sherman through his family connections, was an attorney in Madison as well as a former U.S. Senator and staunch Unionist. He was given clearance to travel through Federal lines and met General Sherman at his headquarters. An agreement was reached to spare the city.
4. The next town we pass through quickly but we do burn the tannery during our march. It is the home of Joel Chandler Harris who is working in a small newspaper here during 1864 but would later write the beloved 'Uncle Remus' fables. What town is that we are hustling through?

Answer: Eatonton, GA

Eatonton is also the birthplace of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy as well as author Alice Walker ("The Color Purple"). The Putnam County Historical Society notes that there were no actual battles around the town during the march since there were no able bodied men left to resist.

Answer: Milledgeville, GA

The Union troops even held a mock assembly in the State Legislature building during the time spent in Milledgeville. They 'repealed' the decision to secede from the Union.

Answer: Sandersville, GA

Sherman used the Brown House in Sandersville as one of his headquarters during the march. Here he met with his men, dined, and napped. The lounge where he napped remains unchanged and can be seen in the house which is now a museum.

Answer: Louisville, GA

Louisville had previously been Georgia's third state capital from 1796 to 1807. During that time, the Market House was built. This oak structure bore witness to many public economic events, including the sale of cotton, property, and slaves. The bell in the cupola was cast in France in 1772 and bound for a New Orleans Convent, when it was hijacked by pirates and sold in Savannah before ending up in Louisville.

Sherman's armies passed by this building, so many portions of it can be viewed today.
What town?

Answer: Waynesborough, GA

The Battle of Waynesborough was fought in the very early hours of the morning of December 4, 1864 and involved cavalries from both armies. A unique aspect of this battle was that the cavalries were both on foot doing hand-to-hand combat.
9. We are almost at the end of the march but we stop in this town along the way. It houses a prison camp to house Union soldiers called Camp Lawton. The Union prisoners have been evacuated but Sherman orders the POW camp and surrounding railroads to be destroyed. What town are we in?

Answer: Millen, GA

By late summer of 1864, the prison camp known as Andersonville was severely overcrowded. The Confederates ordered a new stockade built in Millen since the railroads allowed easy access and a good water supply ran nearby. It is now part of the Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, GA.
10. After a very long march of 15-40 miles per day, we reach our destination. We had a brief skirmish at Fort McAllister and then we occupied the coastal city. Sherman even presented the city to Lincoln as a Christmas gift in 1864. Where are we?

Answer: Savannah, GA

Sherman telegraphed Lincoln, presenting him "as a Christmas gift, the City of Savannah with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition; and also about 25,000 bales of cotton." In less than a month of occupying the city, Sherman prepared his armies to head North to continue to the march to join Grant.
