5. On March 15, 1820 two states were admitted to the Union as part of the Missouri Compromise. What two states were admitted?

Answer: Missouri and Maine

The institution of slavery had been a divisive issue in the United States for decades before the territory of Missouri petitioned Congress for admission to the Union as a state in 1818. Since the Revolution, the country had grown from 13 states to 22 and had managed to maintain a balance of power between slave and free states.

There were 11 free states and 11 slave states, a situation that gave each faction equal representation in the Senate and the power to prevent the passage of legislation not to its liking.

The free states, with their much larger populations, controlled the House of Representatives, by 105 votes to 81. The Missouri Compromise was repealed in 1854.
6. After the Missouri Compromise (1820) there were how many slave and how many free states?

Answer: 12

The Senate wanted to maintain the balance of power between free and slave states. That was the reason for the Missouri Compromise admitting both the free state of Maine and the slave state of Missouri at the same time.

Answer: False

The Monroe Doctrine - it was really more of the Adams Doctrine since John Adams was its major architect - let the world powers know that further colonization of the America's was no longer welcome and that there could be consequences if such expansion was attempted.

The Monroe Doctrine has very far reaching effect and has been cited by U.S. Presidents as recently as JFK: "The Monroe Doctrine means what it has meant since President Monroe and John Quincy Adams enunciated it, and that is that we would oppose a foreign power extending its power to the Western Hemisphere, and that is why we oppose what is happening in Cuba today. That is why we have cut off our trade. That is why we worked in the Organization of American States and in other ways to isolate the Communist menace in Cuba. That is why we will continue to give a good deal of our effort and attention to it."
8. What was unusual about the election of 1824?

Answer: None of the candidates received a majority of the vote.

The 12th amendment went into effect and the House of Representatives choose the next president.

Answer: William Crawford, Henry Clay, John Q. Adams, Andrew Jackson

The Southern, Northern and Western sections of the U.S. each had strong ideas and different concerns about the future. Adams was the Northern candidate, Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson were the Western candidates, and William Crawford was the Southern candidate.
10. Who maneuvered the vote in the House to get John Q. Adams elected instead of himself?

Answer: Henry Clay

Henry Clay was afraid that Andrew Jackson might win and wanted to stop that from happening. After John Adams became President Henry Clay was named his Secretary of State. It seemed that Clay and Adams had struck a deal. Andrew Jackson was furious and felt he should have been prsident.
