Quiz about Six Degrees of Kevins Bacon

Six Degrees of Kevin's "Bacon". Quiz

My eighth quiz! Mmm, bacon. Whether consumed by Kevin (in modern times) or Sir Francis (in medieval times) for breakfast, it's great! In the Chinese "Year of the Pig", here are ten questions on the meat, not the man.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kevin decides he prefers "bakin' bacon" but is very sure his bacon ain't "bakin'" properly at 6 degrees. What temperature (farenheit) should the oven be set at to ensure Kevin's bacon's a bakin' in 30 minutes?

Answer: 350 degrees F.

Bacon (the meat, not Kevin or Sir Francis) may also be cooked via the microwave, barbecue, or frypan.
2. Kevin decides he's makin' a BLT sandwich with his bakin' bacon. What's he makin' with his bacon?

Answer: Bacon + Lettuce + Tomato.

BLT sandwiches are very popular in North America. The United Kingdom has its own version called the "bacon butty", comprising bacon on white/brown bread with ketchup and butter.
3. A firm called the Tegal Chicken Co. once introduced a cured, smoked chicken that tastes similar to bacon, called the "Chicken Bacon". Where is this innovative (!) company located?

Answer: New Zealand

The chicken apparently has less fat and sodium than traditional bacon.

Somehow though, "Bring home the chicken!" doesn't sound as proverbial and eloquent as "Bring home the bacon!".
4. We've all heard the term "Bring home the bacon". According to one popular theory, from where and when was this term derived?

Answer: An English church in the 12th. century.

In the English town of Dunmow, the local church gave every married man a side of bacon if he could swear before God and the congregation that he had not "quarreled" with his wife for an entire year plus one day.
Therefore, any local husband who literally took home a slab of bacon was held in the highest regard for his patience and resolve.
5. Omega-3 fatty acids are important to normal human growth and the prevention of heart disease. There exists one species of pig that produces its own omega-3 fatty acids. Which country is home to this "beneficial bacon beast" (B.B.B.)?

Answer: Spain

Descended from Iberian wild boar, the black-footed Iberico hogs are fed primarily acorns and raised in maintained lush oak forests.

In 2006, scientists announced that they have cloned a pig that produces its own fatty acids.
6. "Koo..o..kookookookookookoooooo!" "Koo..o..kookookookookookooo." "Good day, I'm Bob McKenzie and this is my brother Doug." "How's it going, eh?" Canadian back bacon, popularized on the comedy series SCTV by "hosers" Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas), is made by curing lean bacon and coating it. What is the coating made from?

Answer: Cornmeal

Yellow cornmeal is made from ground, dried corn.

Lean bacon with a jaundiced yellow coating...mmm, might look unappetizing but does in fact taste good.
7. A slice of bacon is known as a "strip" in North America. What name is it given in the UK and Australia?

Answer: Rasher

In addition, a slab of unsliced bacon is known as a "flitch" or a "gammon".

(I bet you were just dying to know that:-)
8. Why is cooking bacon at "high temperatures for an extended period of time" not recommended?

Answer: The nitrate preservative is converted into nitrosamine.

Nitrites and nitrosamines are suspected to be potential carcinogens in animal experiments. Results are not conclusive.

(A typical breakfast gone wrong: Toast, coffee, juice, scrambled eggs and crispy nitrosamines.)
9. This type of Italian-style bacon is made by rubbing salt and black pepper into the "cheek" or "jowl" portion of the pig and curing it for about three weeks.

Answer: Guanciale

Pancetta, Italian bacon from the belly section of the pig, is sometimes used as a substitute.

Chipolata is a small sausage made with salt and black pepper, not a potato snack. It is popular in the United Kingdom.

(Mmmm, pig's jowls. What do you think?)
10. Bacon, cannibal style. Overheard at the breakfast table: First Cannibal: I'm having Bacon for breakfast, along with scrambled eggs. Second Cannibal: You are? Which one, Kevin or Sir Francis? First Cannibal: Neither, the English politician. Second Cannibal: Oh, you mean ___ and eggs?

Answer: Nicholas Bacon

Nicholas Bacon (1509-1579) was an English politician. He was Lord Keeper of the Great Seal during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 and the father of Sir Francis Bacon.

Ezekiel Bacon (1776-1870) was an American politician. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and eventually became a member of the United States House of Representatives.

Lise Bacon (b. 1934) is a Canadian politician. Born in Quebec, Canada, she was appointed a Senator in 1994.

Augustus Bacon (1839-1914) was an American politician. Born in Georgia, he served on the Confederate side in the American Civil War and eventually became House Speaker in the Georgia State House of Representatives.

(Please note: The above conversation between the two cannibals did NOT actually take place nor were human Bacons ever eaten. However, the political Bacons are/were real people.)
