Question 1 of 10
1. A whopping 31% of us Americans are obese! If you heap on the other 33.5 % of us who are merely "pleasantly plump", that number expands to an enormous 64.5% of us who have excess poundage! What exactly is considered to be obese? The American Medical Association (AMA) defines obesity as exceeding which Body Mass Index level? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Basically, a person becomes overweight or obese by taking in more calories than expending. The AMA has identified other contributing factor(s) of obesity. Which of these are contributing factors? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The AMA has also identified serious side effects of obesity. Obesity often carries a very steep price and can cause a host of health problems. Which of these is NOT a health hazard caused by obesity? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Treatment of obesity, first and foremost, is dependent on the desire of the patient to lose excess weight. In most cases, treatment does NOT ordinarily involve which of the following? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Nutritionally, you cannot, nor should not, eliminate fat from your diet. However you should not exceed reasonable amounts of fat. Let's say you are on a reasonable 2000 calorie/day diet. In that case, the FDA has a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of 65 grams of fat. Say, for example, you have half a dozen soccer kids in the back of your SUV and they all want to stop at the Golden Arches for a snack. Of course you have that Big Mac attack as well! You drive through and order the Big Mac Meal including large fries. At least how many grams of fat are contained in the fries and hamburger combined? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Do you remember having to join the "Clean Your Plate" club at home? Or perhaps did your mother admonish you against wasting food because there were thousands of children starving in third world countries? Which of these best describes how you should feel when need to stop eating at a given meal? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Which of these has been commonly quoted as good eating habits? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The National Weight Control Registry, among other things, studies the general habits of people who have taken off significant weight and kept it off. Of course exercise and portion control are two things that consistently appear among successful weight-watchers. One concept of portion control is "energy density", that is, the calorie content of a given portion of food. The key here is to consume more foods that are low in energy density. As the cereal slogan goes, they "will fill you up, but not fill you out." Which of these is a high "energy density" food, and should be avoided? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Exercise is a key to successful weight loss or weight maintenance. The AMA recommends a daily exercise program that could include biking, walking briskly, raking leaves, playing with children actively, and jogging. What total amount of time does the AMA recommend spending each day exercising (accumulated total per day)? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. True or false? For weight control, it is more important to watch your total calorie intake than total fat intake.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: 30

Yes folks, having a Body Mass Index of 30 or more means you are obese. Anything over 25 is overweight. The index is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your squared height in meters, so a person weighing 80 kilograms at a height of 1.80m would just scrape by - 80 / (1.8)² is 24.7. Your doctor may be able to determine this using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which is a fairly good estimate of your bodyfat percentage. Make a BIA part of your annual physical examination!
2. Basically, a person becomes overweight or obese by taking in more calories than expending. The AMA has identified other contributing factor(s) of obesity. Which of these are contributing factors?

Answer: All may contribute to obesity

Any of these factors, and others, can contribute to obesity. It is important to be able to recognize contributing factors so that they can be addressed in the course of treatment. Nevertheless, the basic rule applies - and that is to keep a proper weight level, the calories taken in should not exceed the calories burned.
3. The AMA has also identified serious side effects of obesity. Obesity often carries a very steep price and can cause a host of health problems. Which of these is NOT a health hazard caused by obesity?

Answer: Bulimia

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder. Obesity carries increased risk many types of cancer including breast and cervical cancer in women, and prostate and rectal cancer in men. Obesity also carries the danger of developing osteoarthritis, gall bladder disease, and sleep apnea. Type II, or adult onset diabetes, is being seen more and more often in our overweight children - not just adults.
4. Treatment of obesity, first and foremost, is dependent on the desire of the patient to lose excess weight. In most cases, treatment does NOT ordinarily involve which of the following?

Answer: Surgery

Surgery is, or should be, only available in the most severe cases of obesity. A program of regular exercise, proper nutrition, behavior modification, and, if needed, medication can help a person lose excess weight. Furthermore, surgery does not take care of behavior modification or the root causes of an individual's obesity.

Answer: 53 grams

Throw in an apple pie and you get to 66 grams of fat. (Hint - don't super size it - you're on a diet, remember?) Oh yes, that is your entire DAY'S allowance of fat - not just one meal's! Better loosen that belt. As a special holiday warning, those little bitty fried chicken wings you see at every cocktail party contain 19 grams of fat - EACH!
6. Do you remember having to join the "Clean Your Plate" club at home? Or perhaps did your mother admonish you against wasting food because there were thousands of children starving in third world countries? Which of these best describes how you should feel when need to stop eating at a given meal?

Answer: When you are just satisfied

Portion control is a huge problem in this country. Do not ever feel obligated in any way to eat more than you should. One trick when eating out is to avoid munching on all the things the server brings before your meal - like bread. It is perfectly acceptable to ask the server to bring bread with the meal, or for that matter, not to bring it at all.
7. Which of these has been commonly quoted as good eating habits?

Answer: All of these are good eating habits

Thinking about substituting the Fish sandwich for the Big Mac? You will be saving a whopping 3 grams of fat. Try to avoid fast food as much as reasonable, and avoid fried foods altogether. Eating 6 times a day, but smaller, nutrition-packed meals is also often recommended, although in the 2020s, other strategies such as intermittent fasting, have been found superior in some studies. Also, switch from Cokes and Pepsis and the like to less sugary, preferably unsweetened, drinks.

Answer: Potato Chips

Fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of low "energy density" foods and are monumentally better sources of nutrition than processed snack foods such as Fritos, chips, etc. This concept is fully explained in "The Volumetrics of Weight Control" by Barbara Rolls, PhD. Yes, you can actually eat more and lose weight!
9. Exercise is a key to successful weight loss or weight maintenance. The AMA recommends a daily exercise program that could include biking, walking briskly, raking leaves, playing with children actively, and jogging. What total amount of time does the AMA recommend spending each day exercising (accumulated total per day)?

Answer: 30 minutes

The AMA recommends accumulating a mere 30 minutes of exercise every day to reduce excess weight! The best part is that it does not have to be done all at one time.
10. True or false? For weight control, it is more important to watch your total calorie intake than total fat intake.

Answer: True

Ultimately, it is the difference between calories in and calories expended that will generate weight loss. One pound of body fat is about equal to 3500 calories, so to lose that in a week, you must take in 3500 fewer calories than you expend. That is only about 500 calories a day, or about 1 Margarita! Of course you should make sure your meals are balanced and your fat intake is not excessive. If you watch your calories, avoiding processed and fast foods as much as possible, your fat intake will take care of itself. I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
