Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What vegetable stew do you get when you mix Remy the rat (who featured in a 2007 animated film from Pixar) and a New Zealand-native bird with a white tuft of feathers at its throat?

Answer: Ratatouille

The bird is a tui. Put the rat with a tui and it sounds like you've got the dish Ratatouille, which coincidentally is the name of the 2007 film. The film revolved around the creation of this French dish.

Ratatouille originally came from Nice in France and consists of stewed vegetables. Traditionally, each vegetable is sauteed first before being layered in a casserole and baked. The other answers are all stews.
2. Rice with raw seafood from Japan? Take legal action against the woman! What dish with the fish which is causing the writs to fly?

Answer: Sushi

Another word meaning to 'take legal action' is to 'sue', and a woman is a 'she'. Put them together and it sounds like sushi. Sushi is a dish consisting of vinegared rice typically with raw seafood amongst other ingredients. It is usually served with garnishes such as wasabi and soy sauce. There are many varieties with differing ingredients, forms of presentation and names.

The other dishes listed also feature raw seafood.
3. What name links President Roosevelt's dog and another word for a hill to a Middle Eastern dish made from chickpeas or fava beans?

Answer: Falafel

FDR's dog was called Fala and a fell is a hill. Put them together and you have what sounds like falafel. The falafel is typically formed into balls, deep fried and served in a pita bread pocket with salad, pickled vegetables and sauces. It is usually served hot.

The other dishes area also Middle Eastern dishes.
4. A wizened old woman meets American soldiers and serves this at a Burns supper. What is the dish?

Answer: Haggis

A Burns supper celebrates the life of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, typically on his birthday the 25th of January. Haggis, traditionally accompanied by tatties (mashed potato) and neeps (mashed swede or rutabaga), forms the main course of the meal. During the supper the haggis is normally brought into the room accompanied by bagpipe music and then Burns' poem 'Address to a Haggis' is recited.

As to what a haggis is, Wikipedia provides two entries. One is for wild haggis (Haggis scoticus), which may or may not have one pair of legs shorter than the other. The other refers to a butcher's specialty involving sheep's pluck, oats and spices. Take your pick.
5. A female jazz singer and her dad create a rice dish. What is the name of the dish?

Answer: Paella

The jazz singer is Ella Fitzgerald and her dad is the 'pa' in paella. Paella is a rice dish which originated in Valencia, Spain. There are many versions however the classic Valencian version had rice, beans, meat in the form of chicken and rabbit, snails and seasoning herbs. The other answers are also rice dishes.
6. Combining a North Korean dynasty with the Chinese 'life force' gives you what traditional Korean fermented food?

Answer: Kimchi

The Kim dynasty took over leadership of North Korea in the second half of the 20th century. The Chinese 'life force' is qi or ch'i.

Kimchi is made of fermented vegetables with seasonings. Traditionally the vegetables were stored underground in jars to keep them cool in summer and unfrozen in winter. There are some 180 varieties, usually based on Chinese cabbage, radish, spring onion or cucumber. The type of kimchi made varied with the seasons in the past. These days people can use kimchi refrigerators, which are designed to give precise control of the fermentation process.

The other answers were made up.
7. Here's a clue worthy of a crossword: 'Father remains a dish'. Actually it is a type of Moroccan meat pie you are looking for. What is it called?

Answer: Pastilla

The phrase 'father remains a' could be re-written 'Pa still a', which gives you the 'dish'. This savoury-sweet meat pie, also written as bastilla, was traditionally made with squab (young pigeon) meat but is now more often made with chicken meat. Other ingredients include a phyllo-type dough, almonds, sugar and spices.
8. You could chew on a winner with this Irish dish made from potatoes. What is it?

Answer: Champ

The answers are all synonyms for 'winner' however 'champ' also means 'bite or chew on'. Champ is made with mashed potatoes, chopped spring onions, milk and butter. Seasoning is optional.
9. What is the connection between the fleshy part of a Siamese cat's paw and a stir-fry rice noodle dish typically involving tamarind, peanuts, dried shrimp and egg?

Answer: Pad Thai

The fleshy part of the cat's paw is a pad. Siam is the old name for Thailand and so 'Siamese' is equivalent to 'Thai'. Pad Thai is often served as a street food and has a centuries old heritage. Other ingredients typically include chopped tofu, shallots, ginger, chili pepper and palm sugar.
10. If I was to say this dish sounds like an elk alias, what aubergine (eggplant) -based dish would you have?

Answer: Moussaka

The moose is an alternative native for the elk and an alias is synonymous with 'also known as' or 'a.k.a.'. Put the two together and it sounds like you have this former Ottoman Empire dish. The dish also usually includes ground meat and tomato with some sort of sauce on top, however potatoes are used instead of the aubergines in the Balkan version. The Balkan version is served hot whilst one Arabic version is served chilled.

The other dishes can also be found in Greece.
