The main causes of cirrhosis of liver are alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis C, Wilson's disease, hemochromatosis and hepatitis B. This condition usually presents with no physical manifestations but some of the symptoms that can point to a suspicion of cirrhosis include enlargement of the liver (hepatomegaly), ascites (fluid collection in the peritoneum), abdominal pain and abdominal distension.

There can be changes in the mental status of the person, if the disease progresses leading to hepatic encephalopathy. Liver transplantation is an option for treatment. Use of diuretics or drugs that reduce fluid volume in the body is recommended to reduce the fluid collection in the abdomen.
