Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "If my life were important I would ask _______________."

Answer: will I live or die

This line is from the song "Close Every Door" from the musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." The musical tells the story of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, who can interpret dreams. "Joseph..." is the first collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

It was first performed in 1968, then it was expanded and re-opened in 1991. Some of the actors who have played the part of Joseph are Jason Donovan, Michael Damian, Donny Osmond, Stephen Gately of Boyzone, and H of Steps.
2. "Should I bring him down? Should I __________?"

Answer: scream and shout

This is "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from "Jesus Christ Superstar," another collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Rice. "JCS" tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus. This particular song is sung by Mary Magdalene who has a feeling for Jesus but realizes that she can never have him.
3. "High flying, adored, so young, the instant queen. A rich beautiful thing of all the ________."

Answer: talents

This piece is "High Flying, Adored" from "Evita," an opera based upon the live of the first lady of Argentina, Eva Duarte de Peron. This marks the last collaboration between the composer and the lyricist, Lloyd Webber and Rice. When the musical came to Broadway in 1979, it received great reviews and swept 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Actor (Mandy Patinkin), and Best Actress (Patti LuPone).

In 1996, "Evita" was made into a movie starred Madonna and Antonio Banderas with a new piece of music, "You Must Love Me," adding to it.
4. "Memory, all alone in the __________."

Answer: moonlight

This is the heart-wrenching "Memory" from the musical "Cats." After "Cats" had its final performance on September 10, 2000, it became Broadway's longest running musical for almost 5 years with the highest number of 7485 performances. In 2006, it was conquered by another Lloyd Webber's musical and became the 2nd Broadway's longest-running musical instead. Still, it's an impressive record.

The musical is based on the book by T.S. Eliot with additional lyrics by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe. This musical was filmed with an all-star cast including Elaine Paige as Grizabella, the glamour cat.
5. "Don't ___________ when you want to leave. Don't call me at 3 A.M. from a friend's apartment."

Answer: write a letter

"Song and Dance" is a musical in two acts. The first act is called "Song" where we follow the love life of an English woman who moved to the USA. The "Song" part is based on the earlier musical by Lloyd Webber called "Tell Me On a Sunday" with the brilliant lyrics by Don Black.

This is truly a "tour de force" for the leading performer since it's a one woman show! The second part is called "Dance" where it's all about dancing. The music for the second act is from "Variations," a musical piece which Lloyd Webber composed for his brother, Julian.

The song above is "Tell Me On a Sunday." The role of the English girl (later known as "Emma") has been played by various actresses such as Marti Webb, Bernadette Peters, and Denise Van Outen.
6. "Only you have the power within you. Just _____________, the sea will part before you."

Answer: believe in yourself

Another collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe since "Cats" is in this 1984 musical, "Starlight Express." This song is called "I Am the Starlight," a duet between the Starlight Express and Rusty in believing what one can do. In the London production, this musical starred Ray Shell, Lon Satton, Frances Ruffelle, and Stephanie Lawrence.

This is another of Lloyd Webber's colorful and energetic musicals.
7. "Try to forgive, teach me to live, ________________."

Answer: give me the strength to try

This is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera." The lyricists of this musical are Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. It opened in London at Her Majesty's Theatre with the original cast led by Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Sarah Brightman as Christine Daae, and Steve Barton as Raoul.

When it opened on Broadway in 1987, it managed to take home 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Actor (Michael Crawford), and Best Supporting Actress (Judy Kaye as Carlotta). On January 9, 2006, "Phantom" became the newest Broadway's longest running musical, even longer than "Cats" and it's still going strong. Today "The Phantom of the Opera" is still playing to a full house every night at Her Majesty's Theatre in London and The Majestic Theatre in Broadway.
8. "Anything but lonely. Anything but empty rooms. There's so much in life to share. What's the sense when ______________?"

Answer: no one else is there

Lloyd Webber's 1989 musical, "Aspects of Love," tells the story of love in the life of the five main characters, a young Englishman and his uncle, a French actress, an Italian sculptress, and a young girl who is learned to love for the first time. The lyrics were written by Charles Hart and Don Black.

The song mentioned in the question is "Anything But Lonely" which is sung at the very end of the musical by Rose, the French actress, begging Alex not to leave her. The original cast includes Michael Ball, Ann Crumb, Diana Morrison, Kathleen Rowe McAllen, and Kevin Colson. Believe it or not, James Bond actor, Roger Moore, almost got the part as George but he backed out due to his singing problem.
9. "I don't know why I'm frightened. ______________________."

Answer: I know my way around here

"As If We Never Said Goodbye" is one of the most beautiful songs from this 1993 musical "Sunset Boulevard." The musical was written by Lloyd Webber, Don Black, and Christopher Hampton. It's a story of Norma Desmond, a famed star of yesteryear, who is trying to make a comeback. Patti LuPone and Glenn Close originated the role of Norma Desmond in the London and American productions respectively.
10. "_________ the stars. Whisper when you're sleeping."

Answer: Howl at

This song is called "Whistle Down the Wind" from the musical of the same name. The lyrics are by Jim Steinman. The musical is based on the novel by Mary Hayley Bell. It opened in London in 1998 with Marcus Lovett and Lottie Mayor as the two main characters, The Man and Swallow. Though the musical is not as successful as Lloyd Webber's earlier works and has never got to Broadway, it does contain some very beautiful music.
11. "All kinds of love ____________, causes the broken heart to mend."

Answer: bring us together

"The Beautiful Game" marks the first collaboration between Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton. The song in the question is called "Our Kind of Love." The musical talks about the conflict of people in Ireland regarding their religions using football as the background. This is another good musical but, just like "Whistle Down the Wind," it's not successful and never got to Broadway.
12. "By seven dwarfs! By forty thieves! By ________! By Jove! By Jeeves!"

Answer: George

"By Jeeves" is usually a forgotten musical of Lloyd Webber. I find it a very fun and interesting musical indeed. The lyricist of this comedy musical is Alan Ayckbourn. The musical has some really lovely tunes such as "Travel Hopefully," "Half a Moment," "When Love Arrives," and my favourite "By Jeeves."
13. This might be a bit tough but which is not a line from "Pie Jesu?"

Answer: Santa Santa Evita

"Pie Jesu" is from Lloyd Webber's "Requiem." It was first sung by Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston with the Winchester Cathedral Choir. "Santa Santa Evita" is a verse from, of course, the musical "Evita."
14. "Amics per sempre means ________________. Friends for life, not just a summer or a spring, Amigos Para Siempre." Fill in the missing words from this song. Watch out! this one is a little tricky.

Answer: a love that cannot end

"Amigos Para Siempre" is the official song for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The piece was written by Lloyd Webber and Don Black with Jose Carreras and Sarah Brightman as the performers. Watch out, the verse I gave you is the second time they sing "Amigos Para Siempre" so the answer is "a love that cannot end" not "you'll always be my friend."
15. "Why is love cruel? ____________. Say what you must. It doesn't matter. Until I die, there's only you."

Answer: I wish I knew

Remember this one? You'd probably recognize it if you are a real fan of Lloyd Webber. This one is called "The Heart Is Slow To Learn." It was first sung at ALW 50th Birthday Concert at the Royal Albert Hall by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and was later heard at the "Masterpiece" concert in Beijing sung by Elaine Paige.

The song was meant to be written for the sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera" but the lyrics was later changed to "Our Kind of Love" for "The Beautiful Game" instead.
