Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Humankind is being attacked by "Buggers" (Formics), and children are being trained to become fleet commanders and leaders. What is this novel in which Andrew (Ender) Wiggin discovers that the game was real?

Answer: Ender's Game

"Ender's Game" (1985) is the novel that started the whole series. Not only was it a huge success, but it won multiple awards including the Nebula Award (1985), the Hugo Award (1986) and was a Locus Award nominee (1986). Interestingly, it started out as a short story (1977) but was later expanded to a novel. Card himself explains that the novelization was largely driven to create the character Ender for his novel "Speaker for the Dead."
2. This novel parallels "Ender's Game" and follows the character of Bean. What is this novel that focuses on Bean's experiences in the Battle School?

Answer: Ender's Shadow

As the author Card notes, "Ender's Shadow" (1999) is not a sequel since the events occur at roughly the same time as "Ender's Game." Instead it is a fresh look at events from Bean's perspective. He is a brilliant child who realizes the "game" of fighting the Buggers is real.

It is also revealed that he suffers from genetic manipulation that makes him brilliant, but he will suffer an early death.
3. This novel begins as the war against the Buggers has been won but Andrew Wiggin has not been allowed to go back to Earth. What is this novel that describes Andrew's discovery of the last Formic Hive Queen and the meeting between Andrew and Randall, the son of Bean and Petra?

Answer: Ender in Exile

Although written a decade later, "Ender in Exile" (2008) fills in the 3000 year gap between "Ender's Game" and "Speaker for the Dead." The novel looks at the importance of his sister Valentine's writing about the war and Andrew's role. It also establishes the beginning of the plots concerning Starways Congress, the Hive Queen, and Jane.

It also explains how Andrew would eventually live over 3000 years.
4. In this novel, Bean must try to fight Achilles and find Ender's Jeesh members that have been captured. What is this novel that features a "relationship" between Petra and Achilles and the rise of Virlomi's importance in saving her people?

Answer: Shadow of the Hegemon

As the title "Shadow of the Hegemon" (2001) suggests, the aspiring-to-be Hegemon, Peter Wiggin, plays a key part in this novel as Earth looks like it will fall apart into different factions after the defeat of the Buggers. Bean is a reluctant supporter of Peter, a man he is not sure is much different from Achilles, but he supports the man who may help save Petra and other Jeesh members.
5. The planet Lusitania has been colonized but with the orders of strict segregation and isolation from the newly discovered aliens, the Pequeninos. What is this novel that first brings Andrew Wiggin to the planet as a Speaker for the Dead?

Answer: Speaker for the Dead

This complex novel, "Speaker for the Dead" (1986) is filled with plot lines that include Wiggin hiding his identity as the "Xenocide" who wiped out the Buggers, his job of "speaking" for Marcão, Libo, and Pipo, and his help in preventing another xenocide (of both the Piggies and the last remaining Hive Queen).

This excellent novel also won multiple awards including the Nebula Award (1986), the Hugo, the Locus Awards (1987) and was a Campbell Award nominee (1987). Although it has a very different feel than "Ender's Game," it was the novel that drove Card to begin the creation of what would become the Ender Saga.
6. In this novel Peter Wiggin welcomes Achilles into his camp as a way of "controlling" Achilles while Bean and Petra's relationship blossoms into marriage and child bearing. What is this novel that ends with a deadly confrontation between Bean and Achilles?

Answer: Shadow Puppets

As the "Shadow Puppets" (2002) title notes, Bean and Petra feel controlled in part by the desires of the Hegemon Peter Wiggin. Meanwhile, the couple investigate the chance of having children that do not have Bean's genetic issues. In the end, their fertilized embryos are stolen by Achilles and hidden somewhere in the world.

In order to rescue the embryos, Bean meets and kills Achilles who would not reveal the true locations of the missing embryos.
7. This novel continues Andrew's quest to reestablish the Hive Queen and her Formic children. Additional pressures include the threat of a deadly virus called the Descoloda which the Pequeninos and Formics will take with them when they escape the imminent destruction of the planet Lusitania. What is this novel in which Ender's greatest threat is from a young Qing-jao from the World of Path?

Answer: Xenocide

"Xenocide" (1991) is a continuation of "Speaker for the Dead" in which Andrew Wiggin faces the multiple problems of saving the Piggies, the Hive Queen, and the people of Lusitania. It further explains Jane's origins and takes a fascinating look at the Chinese culture created on the World of Path, dominated by "gods" created through an OCD virus.

Although the novel did not win any awards, it was nominated for the both the Hugo and Locus Award in 1992.
8. In this novel, the world continues in turmoil, especially among the major powers of China, India, Islam, and the Free People of Earth. What is this novel in which the various former Battle Schools students fall from nation leadership while Bean and Petra recover all but one of their children that have been born by host mothers?

Answer: Shadow of the Giant

The novel "Shadow of the Giant" (2005) wraps up the personal (and short-lived) life of Bean and Petra's relationship. All but one child is found, and Bean is exiled (along with his three genetically altered children) to a life of near perpetual space travel. In the meantime, Peter Wiggins is well on his way to creating a new world dominated by the Free People of Earth coalition.
9. This novel finds a newly created young Peter Wiggin and his companion Si Wang-Mu traveling to various worlds to create a movement to stop the destruction of Lusitania. What is this novel in which Andrew Wiggin dies but his death allows the continuation of Jane and Peter?

Answer: Children of the Mind

"Children of the Mind" (1997) was the conclusion of the Ender series but Card has plans to add another book to further tie the Ender series with the Shadow series. The book is an interesting study into what truly makes us human--not the body but the soul or aiúa.
10. In this novel, Bean and his children are traveling through space, victims of genetic alterations. What is this novel in which Bean and his children discover an ancient Formic "ark"?

Answer: Shadows in Flight

"Shadows in Flight" (2012) takes up the story of Bean and his children--Ender, Carlotta, and Cincinnatus--who are suffering from the genetic disorder "Anton's key." Thanks to the relativistic effect of space travel and low gravity, Bean still survives from his gigantism which will eventually kill him. Together, they find a Formic ship that has some still living male Buggers.
