Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book we see Scout (also known as Jean Louise) and Jem go off to school once Dill leaves. However at school Scout does many things that make Miss Caroline angry. Which of the following things does Scout NOT do, that irritates Miss Caroline?

Answer: Scout doesn't take charity from Miss Caroline.

It was not Scout who didn't take charity but rather Walter Cunningham, who came from a family of farmers who did not take what they could not pay back. When Miss Caroline saw that Walter did not have any lunch, she asked him where his lunch was, and all Walter said was that he left it at home. Miss Caroline lent him money but he wouldn't take it.
2. Dill is a little boy from Meridian that visited his Aunt Rachel every summer in Maycomb. As Scout said, Dill could tell the tallest tales anyone had ever heard. Which of the following stories did Dill not tell?

Answer: He had seen a leopard.

Out of the many exaggerations he told, Dill had not seen a leopard. However he had seen an elephant. Among other things, Dill had also been to Nova Scotia, and his grandfather was Brigadier General Joe Wheeler and had left him his sword. According to Aunt Alexandra, Dill has no relatives and is just passed around from family to family every year. Poor Dill.
3. While Scout and Jem were young, they had an obsession with Arthur "Boo" Radley, whom they deemed a ghost as well as a murderer, locked up inside his house 24/7. When Dill comes, the trio begin to piece together rumors which eventually form a game in the form of a play. The trio take turns acting out parts of the Radley household. What is the game known as?

Answer: One Man's Family

According to neighborhood legend, bits of rumors, as well as exaggeration, Mrs. Radley had been beautiful until she married Mr. Radley and lost all her money. She then lost most of her teeth, her hair, and her right forefinger (which Dill made up). Mrs. Radley would sit in the living room and cry most of the time while Boo would whittle away at the furniture in the house. One particular scene involved Mr. Radley walking across the living room, Boo looking up from cutting newspapers and plunging the scissors into Mr. Radley's thigh. Extremely scary.
4. When school starts again, Jem and Scout begin to dread walking across the Radley place every day. However Scout (and later Jem) begin to find gifts and little trinkets in a hollow of a tree trunk in front of the Radley place. Jem begins asking around town, and when no one claims the little trinkets Jem and Scout take ownership of them. Which of the following items do the siblings NOT find in the hollow?

Answer: a woolen blanket

Scout and Jem also find bubble gum, a broken pocket watch on a aluminum chain with a pocket knife, and two soap carvings of a boy and girl (possibly Scout and Jem). Eventually Mr. Nathan Radley plugs the hole up with cement (perhaps he caught on to what was going on). Jem cries over this, as he was planning to leave a thank-you note in the hole the following day, but never got to it.
5. Okay, time for a character question. Which of the following characters is *not* mentioned in the book?

Answer: Joe Ewell

Perhaps there is a Joe Ewell, perhaps there isn't, but the only Ewells mentioned in the book are Bob Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Burris Ewell. The Ewells are filthy poor and live behind the town dump, and, according to Atticus, the Ewells are human but choose to live like pigs. Miss Maudie Atkinson is the Finch's neighbor who likes to grow flowers. Miss Stephanie Crawford is the town gossip, and Heck Tate is the town sheriff.
6. In chapter 8, Maycomb county received two weeks of its coldest weather since the winter of 1885. Many events took place that winter. Which of the following events did NOT take place that winter?

Answer: Mr. Avery died.

As far as we know, Mr. Avery, another townsfolk of Maycomb county, did not die in this book. It did snow that winter and Jem made a snowman which Atticus deemed a "caricature of Mr. Avery", so Jem borrowed Miss Maudie's hat and made the snowman resemble a gardener. Mrs. Radley's death went by unnoticed, as she was seldom seen. Miss Maudie's house did catch on fire and the whole town helped to carry all her stuff out of the burning house. Scout and Jem were told to stand by the Radley place, and Scout was so mystified by the events and the flames that she did not see Boo Radley wrap a blanket around her to keep her warm.

When later told that, Scout freaked out but kept the incident secret within the Finch household.
7. In the beginning of chapter 9, we find out that Atticus is defending a Negro named Tom Robinson. Cecil Jacobs provoked Scout at school one day by saying Atticus defends blacks. Scout asked Atticus why he was defending Robinson, and Atticus gave several distinct reasons why he took the case, such as that if he (Atticus) didn't defend Robinson, he could never hold his head up again or tell Scout or Jem what to do. The next day, Scout cornered Cecil Jacobs in the school yard. Did she fight him?

Answer: No

Atticus told Scout the night before that she and Jem would get a lot of fire and taunts, but they should just hold their heads high and ignore those taunts. As Atticus put it, "This time we aren't fighting the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this [Maycomb] is still our home." Although it was the first time Scout ever walked off from a fight, she felt proud in not letting Atticus down.
8. Around Christmas time, Atticus, Scout and Jem visit Uncle Jack, Aunt Alexandra (Scout does not include Uncle Jimmy, as he is irrelevant in Scout's eyes), and Francis Hancock, Alexandra's grandson, at Finch's Landing. During that time however, Scout was provoked into punching Francis after several taunts. What was the final taunt out of Francis's mouth that let Scout loose?

Answer: Francis calls Atticus a racist term describing him as being biased in favor of Negroes.

Scout then splits her left knuckles on Francis's teeth, but is stopped by Uncle Jack. Francis tells Alexandra that Scout called him a prostitute (a lie obviously) and Jack gives Scout a lecture, in which Scout ends up confessing. She tells Uncle Jack to let it go, as she doesn't want Atticus to know she let him down. Francis's doctrines probably all come from his grandmother, Alexandra, as she always gets on Atticus's case about letting his children run wild.
9. Another character question: What nickname was Atticus known by in his teens growing up in Maycomb?

Answer: Ol' One Shot

Besides being able to play the Jew's Harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in all Maycomb County of his time. When a rabid dog came up the street, the sheriff told Atticus to shoot, as this is a one-shot job. Jem later said that Atticus relaxed all over as if the gun became a part of him, and then shot so quick.

As Miss Maudie puts it, while growing up if Atticus shot 14 out of 15 crows, he'd complain about wasting ammunition. However the reason Atticus never told his kids about that was because he was a civilized man who discovered that God gave him an unfair advantage over living things, and therefore put his gun down.
10. Old Mrs. Dubose always screamed insults at Jem and Finch from her porch as they walked past her house. One day Mrs. Dubose insulted Atticus, referring to him as a man in the courthouse lawing for Negroes. Jem got extremely angry, and tore up her garden-full of camellias. Atticus later found out and made Jem apologize to Mrs. Dubose for what he did. Mrs. Dubose then doled out her punishment. What consequence did Jem have to face?

Answer: Jem had to read to Mrs. Dubose for a month.

Every day Jem, accompanied by Scout, read to Mrs. Dubose until an alarm clock by her bed went off. Some days she would get fits and spittle would drool down her mouth, at which Jem could leave. Jem and Scout later realized that the timer got longer each time they came, and after the month (plus an additional week) was up, Mrs. Dubose passed away. Atticus explained that Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict and took it as a painkiller for years. Before she died, however, Mrs. Dubose wanted to break free of her addiction, and so by listening to Jem read she could concentrate on that alarm clock. Every day the time got longer and longer from the day before, until finally Mrs. Dubose died, but died free. Atticus said that she was the bravest person he ever knew, because even though Mrs. Dubose knew she was licked from the beginning, she still had the guts to continue and to make it through, and she won her battle.
