Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christopher Walken tells a story to a young boy about what small object that plays a pivotal role in "Pulp Fiction"?

Answer: A watch

In the brilliant 1994 movie by Quentin Tarantino, the lives of two hitmen, a gangster, his wife, two small time criminals and a boxer are intertwined. Walken's character, Captain Koons, is none of these people and yet the scene where he explains to the young boy (who will grow up to be the boxer) all about a watch passed on from the men in his family, is riveting and hilarious at the same time.

The watch is a major item in the film, influencing the actions of the boxer and being pivotal to events that take place as a result of those actions. Walken delivers the monologue about the watch brilliantly.
2. Tommy Lee Jones delivers the superb "hard target search" speech that includes checking every "warehouse, farmhouse, hen house, outhouse or doghouse". The main star of this movie is Harrison Ford; what's the film?

Answer: The Fugitive

The 1993 action film "The Fugitive" stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Kimble, a man who has escaped custody and is accused of murdering his wife. Dr. Kimble, while on the run, tries desperately to clear his name. Tommy Lee Jones plays Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard who doggedly hunts for Dr. Kimble. Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant and the "hard target search" speech is iconic and memorable. Jones won the Best Supporting Oscar for his acting in the film.
3. This actor doesn't trust a drive-through in "Lethal Weapon 2" and shoots a barman in the foot who doesn't move fast enough in "Goodfellas". Who is this scene stealer?

Answer: Joe Pesci

Joe Pesci is hilarious as Leo Getz in "Lethal Weapon 2". Getz is a federal witness that two cops, played by Danny Glover and Mel Gibson, are ordered to protect. Getz is hilarious and obnoxious but is right about the fact that you can't trust orders at drive-throughs. Apparently someone counted how many times Getz says "OK" in the movie and it's one hundred and five! In "Goodfellas" Pesci plays the psychotic Tommy DeVito character brilliantly, at times funny, at times violent and always unpredictable and terrifying.

He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in "Goodfellas".
4. He stole the show in the movie "Jerry Maguire" and then stole the show when accepting his Academy Award. Show me the actor!

Answer: Cuba Gooding Jr

Cuba Gooding Jr plays Rod Tidwell, an athlete who agrees to continue to work with disgraced sports agent Jerry Maguire who no-one else will work with. Gooding is brilliant and if you've seen the movie, famous for the line "Show me the money!" which is said over a telephone conversation while Maguire is trying to convince him to stick with him as his agent. Gooding won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal and brought the same level of excitement and exuberance to his thank you speech as he did to his performance.

He kept thanking people through the music, yelled how much he loved everybody involved, jumped up and down, and got a standing ovation for his speech. Very fun.
5. This young actor who passed before his time was the most memorable performer in a film with actors Christian Bale and Gary Oldman. Which "Dark Knight" actor is this?

Answer: Heath Ledger

Ledger plays the Joker in "Dark Knight" and apparently beat out Steve Carell, Adrien Brody and Robin Williams for the role. All of these powerhouses had expressed interest in it before Ledger. Ledger plays the psychopathic mastermind of chaos and violence brilliantly. To perfect the role, he lived by himself in a hotel room for a month so he could get the voice, personality and posture of the evil villain just right. Tragically, he died the day after he finished filming and director Christopher Nolan dedicated the film in part to his memory. Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal.
6. If you are an actress as brilliant as this one, all it takes is eight minutes of screen time as Elizabeth I in "Shakespeare in Love" to take home an Academy Award. Who is this talented lady?

Answer: Judi Dench

Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth I is fantastic in the film "Shakespeare in Love". She is sarcastic, funny, snide and cynical and absolutely commands the stage for the short amount of time she is on screen. She did win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal and joked as she accepted the award that she "should only get a little bit of him" since she was on screen for such a brief amount of time.
7. In which movie did Octavia Spencer play Minny Jackson, the house servant with a special surprise for her awful employer?

Answer: The Help

In a movie with Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain, it is Octavia Spencer who is a standout as a mistreated maid. The movie is about a young white woman named Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan who wants to become a journalist. She anonymously writes a book based on the awful realities black maids have experienced at the hands of their employers. Minny is one of those maids. Minny initially works for a terrible woman who treats her so badly that Minny gets back at her in a way she describes as the "terrible awful" (no spoilers!). For her portrayal, Spencer won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
8. This songstress is not usually outdone by anyone however Jennifer Hudson delivers a phenomenal performance in "Dreamgirls". Who is the "single lady" that takes a back seat to Hudson?

Answer: Beyoncé

"Dreamgirls" was the acting debut for Jennifer Hudson, the former "American Idol" winner. She plays Effie White, a singer in an all girl group called The Dreamettes. Other members of this fictional group include Beyoncé as Deena Jones. The group is based on The Supremes, with the Deena Jones character inspired by Diana Ross.

But it's Hudson who is a standout, for her acting and for her vocal abilities (particularly on the song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going".) Hudson garnered an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film.
9. Melissa McCarthy is hilarious taking the "first watch" in this movie that includes comedy geniuses Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Which film is this?

Answer: Bridesmaids

Melissa McCarthy is so funny as the groom's sister, Megan, in "Bridesmaids". Mostly known for playing Sookie on the TV show "Gilmore Girls" before this role, McCarthy steals just about every scene in "Bridesmaids". From casually describing how she fell off a cruise ship to the awful but hilarious dress shop scene, to her conversation with the "air marshal", McCarthy is sidesplitting at every turn.

This role helped to launch her movie career. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and went on to star in many successful comedies.
10. Who delivers the iconic line "Molly...you in danger girl" in the movie "Ghost"?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg plays Oda Mae Brown, a con woman who pretends to speak with the dead in order to exploit people in grief. In "Ghost" she is actually able to speak to the ghost of Sam, a man who was recently murdered. Sam asks for Oda Mae's help to warn his girlfriend Molly, that she is in danger.

The two main characters are Sam (played by Patrick Swayze) and Molly (played by Demi Moore) but it is Goldberg who steals the show. She is so funny as Oda Mae Brown, the cynical and skeptical petty criminal. Oprah Winfrey auditioned for the part of Oda Mae but can you imagine anyone other than Whoopi playing that part now?
