Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene, a well dressed man is getting married. There are a few peculiar circumstances at this intimate wedding. A player piano is belting out a tune. The lighting is dim. The reverend is shaking in his shoes and the bride doesn't seem like herself. What is the problem with this woman?

Answer: She is a corpse.

Actually, it is the groom who has just suffocated her. The reverend is held at gunpoint to perform the ceremony and paid well. The groom expresses to the parson that it was a most moving ceremony. A cat is shown on top of the piano as well and hangs around the house for a couple scenes.
2. The groom transports his lifeless bride upstairs to his bedroom. He lays her out on the bed and arranges her hair across her face. Candles are lit to set the morbid tone. Clearly this man is not thinking with a sane head. Who is this crazed character?

Answer: Jason Cravette

Cravette is spelled Cravatte on "Chamber of Horrors" sites, but the actual spelling is seen on the side of the crate in the train car that holds Jason. Jason soon disappears after his crime and becomes a fugitive. He is played by Patrick O'Neal, who is also in "The Mad Magician" with Vincent Price (1954), and "The Stepford Wives" (1975). Patrick portrays Jason in a sadistic manner.

He speaks in a cool, hushed style. Definitely one of the more frightening slayers of the era.
3. The frazzled reverend scurries into the police station to alert the Inspector of the bizarre event that has occurred. The charming host of the local criminal wax museum, Anthony Draco, and his sculptor Harold Blount, are on the premises. These men also moonlight as crime consultants for the police department. What historical eastern coast city is the setting for this investigation?

Answer: Baltimore

Baltimore is Jason Cravette's home and he refuses to leave it. The authorities believe he has left the city but are tipped off later on that he hasn't gone anywhere. He escapes while being transported to his demise. Baltimore is also home to John Hopkins Center, Camden Yards, and the National Aquarium.
4. Anthony and Harold are looking through criminal photographs for a display, and are accompanied by Patrolman Tim Albertson. They are discussing a historical crime. Albertson is surprised the Inspector lets them use any photos as he disapproves of amateur criminologists. This upsets Harold and he then rambles on about his analytic crime books he has penned. What does Anthony say will be Harold's next book if he is not careful?

Answer: Blount on Blood Pressure

Harold wondered how dare the Inspector refer to them as amateurs. Harold Blount is an Englishman and the English are very blunt indeed. Harold Blount is played by Wilfred Hyde-White of the series "Peyton Place" and voiced a celestial body in "Xanadu". Anthony Draco is played by Caesar Danova, who contended with Elvis Presley for Ann Margaret's hand in "Viva Las Vegas".
5. The evening show of the "Chamber of Horrors" is in session. Anthony lures his crowd to the second exhibition and as he is lecturing, a tiny man spins around and startles the attendees. Who is this charismatic dwarf?

Answer: Pepe

Pepe informs the viewers he is a descendant of Spanish Kings but that he has descended a little too far. This alone entertains the audience. He later assists Anthony in providing a clue to Jason's whereabouts. He is portrayed by Tun Tun, who appears in "The Phantom Gunslinger" from 1970. He mainly has done Spanish movies. His birth name is Jose Rene Ruiz.
6. Anthony and Harold are running their shift at the museum. Harold receives a visit outside the museum that night from a well-to-do elderly woman in a carriage. She demands that Harold and Anthony come to her home to discuss her nephew, who is mad as a hatter. Who is the madman's bold aunt?

Answer: Mrs. Perryman

Mrs. Perryman is a blue blood who feels disgraced by her nephew Jason's criminal streak. When he finds out the woman he put on a pedestal isn't an angel, his enormous ego explodes. She informs Anthony and Harold that Jason is still in the area and sees him the night before making off with an expensive necklace of hers. Jason associates with sewer rats and she knows he will sell the piece and buy his freedom for a long time. Mrs. Perryman is portrayed by Jeanette Nolan, who voiced Mrs. Bates from "Psycho".
7. The Inspector is outraged that he wasn't told by the aunt that their suspect is discovered. The police department now has to cover familiar territory. Harold now believes he and Anthony can uncover new evidence by turning to places a routine search might overlook. The Inspector states, "You cannot predict the workings of an insane mind!" Anthony retorts by saying, "To a certain extent one can." What statement defines how the psychological duo can predict this?

Answer: "A madman is driven by specific compulsions."

The inspector finally caves in and tells Anthony it wouldn't hurt for him to try his hand in the matter. He is played by Phillip Bourneuf who is in "Pete and Tillie" (1972) with Carol Burnett. Along with Pepe, Anthony and Harold head to the red light district for some insight to Jason's whereabouts.
8. The madman has taken refuge in an upscale brothel. He is surrounded by beautiful, hospitable women. The lady in charge is not so happy, though, to have an outlaw in her care. She tries to persuade him to leave the country to save himself and keep her nose cleaner. Who is this tyrannical lady?

Answer: Madame Corona

Pepe goes through the back streets to find Madame Corona's establishment. He follows the infamous red light at the door. He hears Gloria, an employee refusing to serve an eccentric client. She is forced to dress up in bridal attire and is paid well. Anthony analyzes Pepe's information and deduces that it has to be Cravette. Madame Corona is portrayed by Marie Windsor, who also appears as Nellie Majors, an over zealous reporter, on "Batman" the series.
9. The Inspector and his men, along with Anthony Draco, apprehend their suspect inside the risqué establishment. From the top of the stairs, Anthony is given a devilish stare by the fugitive as the Inspector thanks him for helping them find their man. There is an escape aboard the train that is transporting the madman to his death. What tool does he use to free himself?

Answer: axe

The Judge sentences Jason to hanging by the neck. The officer who accompanies Jason on the train leaves him handcuffed to a wheel on the rear car of the train. Jason has one hand free to grab an axe that is nearby and loosens the wheel. He jumps in the river and proceeds to hack off his other hand to free him from the wheel. Judge Randolph is played by Vinton Hayworth, who is General Schaeffer on "I Dream of Jeannie".
10. The police department has closed the file on this murder, having only recovered a hand that has been rotted to the bone, lodged inside a wheel. The insane criminal is presumed to be dead. Soon he is seen incognito on his way to pick up a delivered chest. Where is the madman?

Answer: New Orleans

The Oriental courier extends a welcome to the city when Jason sets foot in his curio shop. The chest contains weapons that will help Jason carry out a vengeful plan. Jason soon makes another acquaintance before heading back to his hometown.
11. The madman has migrated to a bar and notices a beautiful outsider crossing the street to meet a man. Inside the bar, he buys her champagne to get her attention and then makes her an offer to be his assistant and be paid well. The man she ignores comes to their table in anger and demands this stranger leave. The stranger tells the man that on the contrary, it is he who should leave. What does the madman scare off the fuming patron with?

Answer: a hook

Jason slams his hook down on the table, encasing the man's hand. He offers the jealous man plenty of money to have a good time in New Orleans. The man goes off in a huff. Marie Champlain is the young woman Jason attracts to aid him in revenge for his sentence. She will soon learn of his insanity. Marie is played by Laura Devon, who married Maurice Jarre, a famous cinema composer.
12. Marie is ordered to attract Judge Walter Randolph. He is the one who gave the sentence for death by hanging. Marie and Walter have a lovely dinner at Delano's and then Marie persuades Walter to walk in the fog to his studio. While Walter is fetching their champagne, Marie lets her mentor in through a terrace door. She is gone when Walter reenters the room and he is surprised by a shadowy figure. When Judge Randolph recognizes him, he exclaims, "You're dead." What is the response to his remark?

Answer: "Won't you join me?"

Jason is sitting in a corner in the dark, and the Judge says, "What the devil?" Jason replies, "That's correct; the devil." They struggle in a fight and Judge Randolph is thrown to the floor. Jason's last words to the judge are, "I need a memento of you to take with me, flesh and blood and bone. I need my payment". The judge is then finished off.
13. Harold goes to see an old friend of Judge Randolph's to learn the name of the Judge's lady friend who was the last to see him alive. The friend remembers her first name. Anthony questions Vivian, the hostess at Delano's, where the Judge had dinner with his lady. Vivian is given a name and address by her doorman that Anthony and Pepe overhear. Anthony visits Marie at her dwelling and invites her to pose for a wax figure of herself. Marie is then used to escort Anthony to a ball and lure the doctor away who testified against the madman. What body parts are taken from the doctor?

Answer: hands

Dr. Cobb gets a note for a medical emergency. He boards his carriage and Jason is the surprise driver, although at that moment, the good doctor doesn't know it. Jason gags and binds the doctor to a table in his basement. Jason enlightens the doctor about the time he is examined and the doctor washes his hands like Jason is dirt.

He tells the doctor a living man is a fair trade for a dead hand. Dr. Romulus Cobb is portrayed by Richard O'Brien. Richard appeared in "The Andromeda Strain" (1971) and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977) as a priest. Vivian is played by Patrice Wymore, who appeared in "Ocean's 11" (1960).
14. Patrolman Albertson, who has now become a Sergeant, ambushes the madman in the alley at the back of the museum. Albertson is congratulated on his promotion, and then commands that the suspect step down with his hands in the air. Albertson then tells him to lower his hands slowly, and then receives a jolting surprise. What happens as these hands are being lowered?

Answer: The right hand explodes, exposing a firing revolver.

Jason is wearing a fake hand to resemble his own, concealing the deadly weapon that ends Sergeant Albertson's life. He then rides past the front of the museum and tips his hat. This scene is not only a bombshell literally, but it is unsettling to see Jason steal Albertson's control. Rest in peace Tim Albertson! Albertson is Wayne Rogers, who also had appearances on "The FBI" and "Murder She Wrote".
15. When the madman executes each of his victims, there are two elements incorporated into the fatal acts. These are the audible and visual warnings as the maniac raises his arm to strike. What are these thought provoking and profound alarms?

Answer: fear flasher and horror horn

These are some of the all time best effect sequences in history, and are also highlighted in the opening credits. "Turn away when you see the Fear Flasher; Close your eyes when you hear the Horror Horn." The narrator who glumly delivers this warning is William Conrad of "Cannon" fame.
