Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jamie Bell leapt onto our film screens in 2000 as an aspiring ballet dancer under the tutelage of Julie Walters. What name was shared by both the film and Bell's character?

Answer: Billy Elliot

'Billy Elliot' followed the story of a young boy (Jamie Bell) from North-East England who defied his father's wishes in order to study ballet. Set at the time of the coal miners' strike of the mid-1980s, Billy's father (a tough coal miner) was furious when he discovered that his son had quit the boxing class he had enrolled him in and chosen instead to be the only boy in the local ballet class. Eventually though Mr Elliot saw past the stereotypes and his own prejudices and supported his son in his chosen career. Billy got to attend the Royal Ballet School and went on to become a leading performer - with his father and his ballet teacher (Julie Walters) watching proudly from the audience.

Plaudits for the film included nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Julie Walters and Best Director for Stephen Daldry at the 73rd Academy Awards, as well as BAFTA wins for both Julie Walters and the then 14-year-old Jamie Bell.

'Billy Budd' was a 1962 film based on a novel by Herman Melville; 'Billy Bathgate' was a 1991 film starring Bruce Willis and Nicole Kidman; and 'Billy Madison' was a 1995 comedy starring Adam Sandler.
2. In which musical film did Julie Walters and Colin Firth play two of the guests at a wedding held on a beautiful Greek island?

Answer: Mamma Mia!

'Mamma Mia!' was a 2008 film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name and was based on songs by the Swedish band ABBA. The plot told the story of the wedding of Sophie Sheridan on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi. Sophie, who had been brought up by her single mother, Donna, discovered that there were three men with the potential to be her father and proceeded to invite all of them to her wedding with the aim of finding out which of the three it was so he could walk her down the aisle. Colin Firth played one of the possible fathers - a gay English banker by the name of Harry Bright - while Julie Walters played Rosie, a friend of Donna's and a former member of the band Donna and the Dynamos.

The fun-filled movie involved a lot of singing, dancing and general leaping about to some of ABBA's catchiest tunes, including 'Dancing Queen', 'Super Trouper' and 'Take a Chance on Me' as well as the eponymous 'Mamma Mia!'.

'Rachel Getting Married', 'Happy-Go-Lucky' and 'Doubt' were all films of 2008 that received nominations for the 81st Academy Awards. Shockingly, 'Mamma Mia!' failed to gain a single nomination despite being one of the most successful and popular films of the year.
3. Colin Firth's character, Lord Wessex, married Gwyneth Paltrow's character, Viola de Lesseps, in which film set in the 16th century?

Answer: Shakespeare in Love

In 'Shakespeare in Love', a rich young woman named Viola de Lesseps dressed up as a boy in order to be able to act on the stage in Elizabethan England. This daring act led her to meet and fall in love with the playwright William Shakespeare, but her leap of faith in starting an affair with him was ill-judged as it turned out that he was already married to Anne Hathaway (not to be confused with the Hollywood actress of the same name who didn't appear in this film). Since marrying Shakespeare was out of the question, Viola instead married the aristocratic Lord Wessex according to the wishes of her family and left for America with him. Shakespeare was then left to simply remember her as his muse; Viola's story bears a strong resemblance to the plot of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'.

'The Other Boleyn Girl' (2003 and 2008) and 'Elizabeth' (1998) were two other films set in the 16th century. 'The Taming of the Shrew' was one of Shakespeare's plays and has been adapted for both film and television on numerous occasions.
4. What is the deceptively upbeat name of the 2000 film that told the story of the relationship between a woman whose husband had been killed in an air crash (Gwyneth Paltrow) and a man who had narrowly avoided boarding the same plane (Ben Affleck)?

Answer: Bounce

At the beginning of 'Bounce', Buddy Amaral (played by Ben Affleck) gave his plane ticket to a fellow passenger delayed with him at O'Hare airport, as the man (named Greg) wanted to get home to his wife and two young sons. The plane crashed and Buddy, who was an advertising executive employed by the airline, was left with guilt for both Greg's death and his own adverts aimed at rescuing the airline's reputation at the expense of the victims. To assuage that guilt he deliberately struck up a relationship with Greg's widow Abby (Gwyneth Paltrow) without telling her of his involvement in her husband's death. However, the truth eventually came to light and nearly destroyed their newfound happiness.

Leap, spring and fly are simply synonyms of 'bounce' - none of them are the titles of films made in 2000.
5. Ben Affleck took on the role of the Caped Crusader, with Amy Adams playing the love interest of his rival, in which of these comic book-inspired films?

Answer: Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman, otherwise known as the 'Caped Crusader' or 'The Dark Knight', is a character created by DC Comics that has appeared in multiple feature films, television series and video games and been played by a whole host of famous actors. Ben Affleck however took on the role for the 2016 film 'Batman versus Superman: Dawn of Justice', the first live action film to feature both Batman and the equally famous Superman. Amy Adams played Superman's long-standing love interest, Lois Lane, while Henry Cavill portrayed the Man of Steel himself.

In the film, businessman Lex Luthor worked to create distrust between Batman and Superman, which resulted in Superman attempting to publish the secret of Batman's alter ego as the billionaire Bruce Wayne and Batman seeking kryptonite with the intention of using it as a weapon to kill Superman. Luthor then kidnapped Superman's adoptive mother, Martha Kent, and demanded that Superman kill Batman as the price of her ransom. The fight between the two superheroes nearly resulted in the death of Superman, but they eventually were able to work together to bring down the real villain - Lex Luthor.
6. Which romantic comedy featuring Amy Adams and John Lithgow was about a woman who took a somewhat circuitous and disaster-filled trip to Ireland for the sole purpose of proposing to her boyfriend?

Answer: Leap Year

'Leap Year' is about the age old tradition that each time February 29th rolls around it becomes a woman's prerogative to propose marriage to her boyfriend and that said boyfriend ought to accept. In the film, Amy Adams' character, Anna Brady, undertook an epic journey from Boston to Dublin to propose to her doctor boyfriend, Jeremy - who had been slow to make that commitment himself. However, her journey turned into a disaster when her plane was diverted to Wales and her boat from Wales to Dublin landed her in the wrong part of Ireland entirely. She eventually enlisted the help of a local pub landlord to drive her to Dublin, but they were waylaid by a herd of cows, their car ended up in a ditch and her luggage was stolen. Eventually she arrived at her boyfriend's hotel in Dublin, only for him to propose to her instead and ruin her plan. John Lithgow played Anna's father, Jack Brady.

'Dancing at Lughnasa' was a 1998 film set in an Irish town that starred Meryl Streep; 'The Wedding Planner' (2001) starred Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey; and Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds appeared in 'The Proposal' - which was set in Alaska.
7. In which animated film did John Lithgow provide the voice of the evil Lord Farquaad who sent the eponymous hero on a mission to rescue a princess (voiced by Cameron Diaz)?

Answer: Shrek

Lord Farquaad was the main antagonist in the 2001 film 'Shrek'. In order to become king of Duloc he was required to marry a princess, but unfortunately the one he decided on, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), was trapped in a tower and guarded by a vicious dragon. Unwilling to actually bother rescuing his potential bride himself, he held a tournament to find a suitably brave knight to take on the task for him. The winner of this competition was Shrek, an ogre from a nearby swamp who had travelled to Duloc in order to complain about the number of fairy tale characters being dumped in his home. Shrek agreed to rescue Fiona in return for the removal of the interlopers, but ended up falling in love with the princess himself, while Lord Farquaad was eaten by the aforementioned dragon!

'Shrek' was the first winner of an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Of the incorrect options, 'Rango' won the same award in 2011, while 'Bolt' and 'Puss in Boots' were both nominated for it (in 2008 and 2011 respectively). 'Bolt' is about a young dog who stars in his own television series; 'Rango' features a chameleon in the Wild West; and 'Puss in Boots' is a spin-off of the 'Shrek' series.
8. In which 2002 film did Cameron Diaz play a young pickpocket and con artist while Jim Broadbent portrayed a crime lord and politician named William Tweed?

Answer: Gangs of New York

'Gangs of New York' was, unsurprisingly, set in New York during the mid-19th century and covered the issues of mass Irish immigration to the city, the subsequent gang warfare and the impact of the start of the American Civil War. The main protagonists were a man named Amsterdam Vallon and a gang leader called "Bill the Butcher" Cutting, who had killed Priest Vallon - a rival gang leader and Amsterdam's father. The film followed Amsterdam's journey to gain revenge for his father's death by killing Cutting. Cameron Diaz's character, Jenny Everdeane, was Amsterdam's love interest and William Tweed (Jim Broadbent) was the head of the criminal empire that Amsterdam joined.

The real-life William M. Tweed was a member of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for New York during the mid-19th century. However, he was also corrupt and responsible for embezzling tens of millions of dollars from city funds. Amazingly, despite this criminality coming to light, he was still re-elected to public office!
9. Jim Broadbent and Samuel L. Jackson both appeared in which 2016 film about Lord Greystoke's attempt to expose an illegal slave trade in the Congo in Victorian times?

Answer: The Legend of Tarzan

Edgar Rice Burroughs' stories about Tarzan, an orphaned young aristocrat brought up by apes in the African jungle, have been turned into numerous films over the years. At the start of the 2016 film 'The Legend of Tarzan', the eponymous hero was living in Victorian England and was something of a celebrity thanks to his unusual upbringing. He and his wife, Jane, returned to Africa when he was informed of a suspicion that the King of Belgium was running an illegal slave trade in the area where Tarzan grew up. Together with an American called George Washington Williams (played by Samuel L. Jackson), Tarzan and Jane eventually uncovered evidence of the slavery scheme, despite suffering various attacks and a kidnapping in the process. They later decided to eschew their life in England and remain in Africa; Williams returned to England alone to present their evidence to the British Prime Minister - played by Jim Broadbent.

Alexander Skarsgård played Lord Greystoke/Tarzan in 'The Legend of Tarzan'. 'Tarzan the Ape Man' was a 1932 film starring Johnny Weissmuller in the title role. 'Tarzan and the Slave Girl' starred Lex Barker in 1950 and 'Tarzan and the Lost City' was first released in 1998, with the lead role played by Casper Van Dien.
10. Which science fiction film about the attempts of an extremist group to kill people born with the natural ability to teleport starred Samuel L. Jackson as one of the extremist 'Paladins' and Jamie Bell as a teleporter who chose to fight back?

Answer: Jumper

'Jumper' was first released in 2008 and was based on a book by the American writer Steven Gould. The basic premise of the film was the idea that a small number of people around the world had the natural ability to leap through space by 'jumping' - i.e. teleporting themselves from one place to another. Unfortunately, this handy ability made them targets for an extremist group known as the Paladins - who simply wanted to kill them for being different. Samuel L. Jackson played the Paladins' leader, Roland Cox, and Jamie Bell was a 'Jumper' who devoted his life to tracking down and killing Paladins. In the end the 'Jumpers' prevailed and Roland Cox was dumped in a remote cave and given a lecture on tolerance.

'The Fly', 'Logan's Run' and 'X2' (from the 'X-Men' series) are other science fiction films where the ability to teleport plays a major role in the plot.
