Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in Harlem in 1927, this velvet-voiced singer made a name for himself singing Caribbean-styled music, which earned him the nickname King of Calypso. He is probably best known for singing a song about tired workers loading boats with the type of fruit seen in the picture. Who is this wonderful singer?

Answer: Harry Belafonte

Belafonte's biggest hit may have been "The Banana Boat Song" (which contained the addictive chorus with the repeated "Day-O"), but his Christmas album is the one which evokes the happiest Christmas memories for me. The quote from the title of this quiz is from a song on that album. First released in 1958, "To Wish You a Merry Christmas" has been re-released, first in 1962 with some changes including the addition of the wonderful song "Mary's Boy Child", in 1976 and again in 2001 with five new songs added.
2. This American singer and song writer was born in Minnesota in 1941. In his earlier days, in the 60s, his music spoke loudly against war and for freedom and civil rights, even becoming anthems for some of the causes. Raised in the Jewish faith, he converted to Christianity in the 70s, a fact which was reflected in his music at the time. Royalties from his 2001 Christmas CD go to charity. Who is this singer with a distinctive voice?

Answer: Bob Dylan

In my humble opinion, Bob Dylan is one of the great songwriters of his generation. I am not as fond of his performances, but many disagree. Early songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and "The Times They are a-Changin'" (1965) were embraced by the anti-war groups and the civil rights movement, although neither of them charted on the US charts. "The Times They Are a-Changin'" did chart in the UK. However "Like a Rolling Stone" (1965) did peak at number two on US Billboard charts.

Royalties from "Christmas in the Heart" (2009), which does not contain any songs written by Dylan, are shared between the charities Feeding America, Crisis (UK) and World Food Programme.
3. Including songs like "Hairy Christmas" and "Ragin' Cajun Redneck Christmas" this family, who made their fortune with hunting accessories and are known for their reality television show, released their Christmas CD in 2013. What's the name of the family who released this CD?

Answer: Robertson

Phil Robertson started Duck Commander in 1972. This is the name of both the company and the duck call on which the company was founded. It is a multimillion dollar company that has expanded into other hunting equipment.
The show "Duck Dynasty" is a reality show about the Robertson family that started in 2012. It is a popular show that that inspired the look, among young men, of wearing long, uneven beards and dressing in camouflage.

The Christmas CD "Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas" was released in 2012 and includes some Christmas classics and a couple of original songs written or co-written by Willie Robertson.
4. This celebrity also did not make her name in the music industry; in fact she started out her career as a comedienne. Not known for keeping her opinions to herself, she has hosted her own talk show, as well as co-hosted "The View". She has tried her hand at acting, including a movie about a subject represented by the picture. Who is this multi-talented entertainer who has released Christmas CDs?

Answer: Rosie O'Donnell

The CDs are "A Rosie Christmas" (1999) and "Another Rosie Christmas" (2000). All of the songs on the first CD are sung as duets, including one sung with Elmo from "Sesame Street", but O'Donnell does branch out and sing some songs on her own in the second offering.

Her show was "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" (1996-2002) and the picture refers to the movie "A League of Their Own" (1992), in which she played Doris Murphy.
5. This British group, formed in 1967, gradually developed into a progressive rock band, under the leadership of lead singer Ian Anderson. Anderson's distinctive voice, coupled with the instrument he is famous for, make their songs readily recognizable to anyone familiar with the group. Which group is this, which released its first Christmas CD in 2003?

Answer: Jethro Tull

"The Jethro Tull Christmas Album" (2003) contains a nice balance of classic Christmas songs and original offerings, written by lead singer and flautist, Ian Anderson. A second CD "Christmas at St Bride's 2008", a live recording, was released in 2009.

Two of Jethro Tull's bigger hits were "Bungle in the Jungle" (1974) and "Aqualung" (1971).
6. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, this singer wrote his first song when he was 14 years old. The picture refers to the name of his first group, immortalised in one of his hit songs as being "...in pieces on the ground". He has the distinction of being the first non-British act to be signed by McCartney to record at Apple. Who is this "Sweet Baby" musician who recorded his first Christmas CD in 2004?

Answer: James Taylor

James Taylor is often referred to as Sweet Baby James, a nickname that grew out of the song (and album) "Sweet Baby James" (1970). However, according to Taylor, the song was written for his newborn nephew, who was named after him. Arguably his biggest hit was "You've Got a Friend" (1971), which was written by Carole King. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in 2014, and his talent and wit made for a most enjoyable evening.

His original group was called Flying Machines. "James Taylor: A Christmas Album" was released in 2004, followed by "James Taylor at Christmas" (2006).
7. Born in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, in 1945, this musician's passion for human rights has been long-documented in his lyrics. One of his biggest hits had him "...wondering where..." the animals in the picture are, but in another he let us know what he would do if he had a rocket launcher. Who is this Canadian artist, who started his career in the 60s and released his Christmas CD in 1993?

Answer: Bruce Cockburn

Bruce Cockburn began his musical career in the mid-60s but did not make much of an impact in the States until "Wondering Where the Lions Are", from his 1979 album "Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws". Many of his songs reflect his political position and concern for humankind, but none more so than "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" (1984).

His Christmas CD, titled simply "Christmas" was released in 1993.
8. Born in Brooklyn in 1941, this popular singer has been entertaining listeners since the 60s. He has had numerous number one hits, including one represented by the picture, which came from a movie he starred in in 1980 with Lucie Arnaz. He released his first Christmas CD in 1992, which surprised a lot of people given the fact that he is Jewish. The anecdote circulating at the time was that he had sought permission from his grandmother before doing so. Who is this iconic singer?

Answer: Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond has entertained people around the world for years with hits like "Sweet Caroline" (1969), "Cracklin' Rosie" (1970), "Song Sung Blue" (1972) and many others, including "America" (1981), the song represented in the picture and from the movie "The Jazz Singer" (1980). "Neil Diamond, The Christmas Album" (1992) was followed by "The Christmas Album, Volume II" (1994), "A Cherry Cherry Christmas" (2009) and "Classic Christmas Album" (2013).
9. Born in Mississippi on Christmas Day, 1946, this musician has built an empire around his music, including (but not limited to) stores, restaurants, his own beer label (in conjunction with Anheuser-Busch) and recording studios. Who is this man, whose fans are called a name associated with the picture?

Answer: Jimmy Buffett

When Jimmy Buffett began his career in the late 60s, he was more of a country musician. His real fame has come through songs about laid-back life on a beach somewhere, with songs like "Margaritaville" (1977) and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (1978). His fans are known as Parrotheads.

His Christmas CD, "Christmas Island", released in 1996, is an eclectic mix of songs, a couple written by Buffett.
10. Born in Arkansas during the Great Depression, this musician with a distinctive, deep voice is probably best remembered for country music, although much of his music has crossed over into other genres. His story has been turned into a movie, named after one of his biggest hits. Which musician, whose nickname is related to the picture, released several Christmas albums?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was known as The Man in Black and even released a song in 1971 called "Man in Black" which explained why he wore black. Some of his biggest hits were "Folsom Prison Blues" (1955), "I Walk the Line" (1956) and "Ring of Fire" (1963). The movie about his life was "Walk the Line" (2005) and starred Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. Cash's Christmas albums were "The Christmas Spirit" (1963), "The Johnny Cash Family Christmas" (1972), "Classic Christmas" (1980) and "Johnny Cash Country Christmas" (1991). Johnny Cash passed away in 2003.
