Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song features a dance where you point your finger up, then down, ad infinitum?

Answer: Stayin' Alive

As sung by the Bee Gees, this featured in the movie 'Saturday Night Fever'. The dance works better if you wear a white suit. 'Greased Lightning' is more complicated, as you have to point the finger slowly from one side to the other, before pointing it up and down.
2. If you "slide your feet up the street, bend your back, shift your arm, then you pull it back", then you are walking like an....?

Answer: Egyptian

'Walk Like an Egyptian' was a massive hit for '80s girl group the Bangles.
3. A "favourite" at family discos in holiday camps, which song features "fun" actions to go with the "hilarious" lyrics: '...push pineapple, shake the tree, ... push pineapple, grind coffee'?

Answer: Agadoo

This "classic" by Black Lace brings a shiver to my spine (and not in a good way).
4. "Lift your feet up, swing your arms up too, move your head both ways like you see me do, then just repeat to the swinging beat." Follow these simple instructions and you are doing the...?

Answer: Freddie

As sung by Freddie and the Dreamers in 1965. This was a minor hit in the US, and the song was written specially for them in honour of their (hard to believe this, but it's true!) highly choreographed routines. Freddie and his Dreamer friends used to flail their arms around while skipping madly about the stage. The line "it's the thing to do, kids will envy you" was surely ironic?
5. Which 1980s hit caused people to flap imaginary wings on the dance floor?

Answer: The Birdie Song

"And a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, and shake your bum..." Unforgettable. Unfortunately. Sadly, I remember dancing to this at my very first school disco, and enjoying it.
6. This was a hit in the 1960s for Little Eva, and again in the 1980s for Kylie Minogue. Dancers were encouraged to "swing your hips now... jump up, jump back... c'mon make a chain now." What was the song?

Answer: The Locomotion

"So come on, come on, do The Locomotion with me..." Kylie took this to number 1 in the UK in 1988.
7. This was a massive hit worldwide in the summer of 1996, even though there were two different versions released at the same time. The song was sung mainly in Spanish, and the dance involved complicated arm movements and some hip wiggling. Name that song (and dance)!

Answer: The Macarena

One version was sung by Los Del Rio, who were two middle-aged gentlemen in suits. The other version was sung by Los Del Mar. Since then there have been whole albums released, all based on the same song.
8. Which British pop group has had several chart hits with songs that also have accompanying dances, as performed by lines of little girls at school discos?

Answer: Steps

The first hit for Steps was "5,6,7,8". This had a line-dance style routine. Unfortunately, they resurfaced with several more hit songs, most with their own dance. Go to any family wedding during the late 1990s, and you would have seen little girls performing the routines perfectly, and their aunties attempting (but failing) to copy them. Guess which category I'm in!
9. This Madonna classic included a list of the world's most stylish people in the middle section, and a plea to the dancers to "strike a pose, there's nothing to it." Dancers flailed their arms even more bizarrely than in the dance for Question 7. What was it called?

Answer: Vogue

"Let your body move to the music, Let your body go with the flow." How come Madonna is the only person on earth to be able to do this dance? I still remember a classic Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones parody of this, called "Brogues", where they listed Lionel Blair and Larry Grayson as some of the world's most stylish people.
10. Which "offbeat" film and musical which starred Tim Curry featured a song (with accompanying dance, of course) that was a chart hit, and has been a student favourite for years?

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

'The Timewarp' is a classic. Love it or hate it, people around the world know how to do it (and sadly, too often do...).
