Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On January 17, 1987, Gregory Abbott's one hit wonder song "Shake You Down" peaked at number 1 being the only one hit wonder band to reach these heights on the Billboard charts that year. According to the lyrics, what does the girl read to make him "wanna shake you down"? "You read my _____________ Girl i wanna shake you down I could give you all the loving you need Come on let me take you down We'll go all the way to heaven"

Answer: mind

"Shake You Down" was released late in 1986 from Gregory Abbott's album "Shake You Down". This hit song would be the only one to reach any success on the Billboard charts for Gregory Abbott, however, as an R&B artist, he would have a few songs peak on the R&B charts.

In 1986, the song "I Got the Feelin'" peaked at number 5 on the R&B charts. In 1988, "I'll Prove It To You" would also peak at number 5 on the R&B charts.
2. Swing Out Sister released eight albums between 1987 and 2007. The only song to gain any popularity or success came from their "It's Better To Travel" album was called "Breakout". In the chorus to this hit song, what is it that seems to "make no sense"? "When _________________ make no sense When every answer's wrong You're fighting with less confidence All expectations gone"

Answer: explanations

Swing Out Sister formed in Britain performing various styles of music including smooth jazz, cool jazz, and acid jazz. In North America, they broke out on the Billboard charts when their hit song "Breakout" peaked at number 6 in May of 1987. The song included a music video where lead singer Corinne Drewery is a fashion designer, and with the assistance of her band members, models one of her dresses. "Breakout" has been covered by various bands including the popular Japanese band Orange Lounge.
3. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, "The Georgia Satellites" were expected to burst into the rock music scene with instant and continued success. With only one hit song to reach the top 40, however, this was not the case. Most people immediately recognize their hit song "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" just hearing the introductory line. According to the introduction, what item is found in the pocket that keeps going "jing-a-ling-a-ling"? "I got a ______________ in my pocket going jing-a-ling-a-ling"

Answer: little change

The Georgia Satellites performed rock music and claim to have been inspired by many famous musicians and bands including Chuck Berry and AC/DC. The band had many ups and downs, particularly their breakup in 1984 (only four years after forming). In 1985, however, after one band member, Dan Baird, began performing a band called The Woodpeckers, the others regrouped as The Georgia Satellites once again.

It was after this hurdle that the band achieved success. In 1987, "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" went all the way to number 2 on the Billboard charts.

This would be their only song to crack the top 40, however, they released a few other memorable songs, particularly "Hippy Hippy Shake" which was recorded for the "Cocktail" soundtrack and a cover of Ringo Starr's "Don't Pass Me By".
4. A good majority of popular 1987 one hit wonder songs were recorded and peaked between the months of May and September. The first of these peaked on May 30. In early 1987, The Breakfast Club released their only hit song "Right On Track" and by May, it charted at number 7 on the Billboard charts. In the opening lines to their hit song "Right On Track", what activity is being performed? "Gonna make a move that knocks you over Watch this turn one's gonna put you away But I'm doing my very best ____________"

Answer: dancing

The Breakfast Club formed in 1979 and disbanded in 1988. They were notorious for their sudden lineup changes. The band had many famous musicians in their lineup including Madonna, Stephen Bray, and Randy Jackson. It wasn't until nearly 10 years after their formation that they would have a top 40 hit on the Billboard charts. During their years being active, The Breakfast Club only recorded one studio album, this being "The Breakfast Club" which featured their top 10 hit "Right On Track". Shortly after their last single, "Drive My Car", was released, the band disbanded.
5. By June of 1987, another hit song was released by a one hit wonder group. This time, the hit song "Fascinated" would peak at number 21 on the Billboard Charts. According to the popular lyrics from this Company B song, what is the third thing that she is fascinated by? "'Cause I, I'm fascinated by your love, boy And I'm fascinated by your love toy I'm fascinated by __________________"

Answer: the way you make me feel

Company B were an all female dance trio and were one of many popular girl groups of the late 1980s. Their hit song "Fascinated" went all the way to number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts and went to number 21 on the Billboard top 40.

Unfortunately, this would be the only hit song that they would have. They did, however, leave one image stuck in the minds of their fans; that being their white wigs and sexy looks.
6. The popular soul hit "Don't Disturb This Groove" hit number 1 on the R&B charts in April 1987 and then peaked again on the Billboard charts in July. According to the lyrics of this song by The System, what should be hung up on the door? "With venus and cupid, the picture's very clear Hang the ____________ upon the door, say Don't disturb this groove"

Answer: sign

The System peaked on the Billboard charts with "Don't Disturb This Groove" on July 18, 1987 when their song went all the way to number 4. The band consisted of only two members; Mic Murphy (vocals/guitars) and David Frank (keyboards). As a band, most of their success came in the club scene as much of their music was in the genre of techno and synthesizer. During the 1980s, each band member were involved in various side projects including works with Scritti Politti, Phil Collins, and Chaka Khan. David Frank succeeded as a songwriter and following his work with The System, wrote many popular songs, particularly Christina Aguilera's "Genie In A Bottle".
7. Canadian band The Nylons are best known for cover versions of three popular 1960s songs. Only one of these three songs, "Kiss Him Goodbye", managed to become successful on the Billboard charts. Where are the tears falling from according to this popular cover song? "Even though the tears are fallin' From my ___________"

Answer: eyes

"Kiss Him Goodbye" was originally written and performed in 1969 by the band Steam under the name "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye". The song has been covered many times, particularly by the bands Bananarama and The Nylons. As a cover, it was most successfully recorded by The Nylons, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard charts on August 1, 1987. Unlike the original and various cover versions, The Nylons recorded a more mellow, a capella style that many music fans continue to enjoy.

They have included drums to their a capella style (landing them criticism by many music critics).

They, however, preservered through this criticism and landed in the music spotlight once and for all.
8. "Heart and Soul" would be the only song for the British group T'Pau to gain any mainstream success in North America. The song would hit number 4 on the Billboard charts shortly after being included in a Levi Jeans television advertisement. In the popular chorus to this hit song, what should love be used to do? "Give a little bit of heart and soul. Give a little bit of love to __________"

Answer: grow

"Heart and Soul" was released in 1987 and came from T'Pau's first album "Bridge of Spies". "Heart and Soul" was unsuccessful in the United Kingdom, however, was very popular in North America. Strangely enough, none of their other songs would reach the Billboard Top 40 in North America. T'Pau gained plenty of success in the United Kingdom with their songs "China In Your Hand" which went to number 1 in the UK as well as the songs "Valentine" and "Sex Talk" which reached the top 40 in the UK.
9. Although quite popular in their native homeland of Britain, the music group Living In A Box would be virtually unknown in North America with the exception of their only hit song (also entitled) "Living In A Box" would peak on the Billboard charts in August 1987. When listening to the chorus to the song, they discuss a particular type of box. What type of box is this? "In my own mind Am I living in a box Am I living in a ____________ box"

Answer: cardboard

Living In A Box formed in Sheffield, United Kingdom in 1985. In the United Kingdom, they would gain two top ten hits, however, in North America, they would only be successful with their self-titled song "Living In A Box". Their only North American hit song would peak at number 17 on August 22, 1987, and strangely enough, would be from their first album "Living In A Box".
10. British group Danny Wilson had the unusual experience of releasing a song that was initially unsuccessful in their homeland, however, it was immediately successful in North America. "Mary's Prayer" was an instant success in North America and it showed when the song peaked at number 23 on the Billboard charts. In the chorus, what religious prayer is the song character contemplating to recite? "So if I say save me save me Be the light in my eyes And if I say ten _____________ Leave a light on heaven for me"

Answer: Hail Mary's

Contrary to popular belief, Danny Wilson is in fact "a band" and not a solo artist. The band consisted of two brothers, Gary and Kit Clark, as well as Ged Grimes. The band originally performed under the name Spencer Tracy, however, changed their name after watching the popular Frank Sinatra film "Meet Danny Wilson".

The band would meet limited success and would only peak at number 23 in North America. After only three albums and short-lived success, the band broke up in 1991. Grimes embarked on a songwriting career and has worked with many popular musicians including Natalie Imbruglia, while Gary and Kit Clark went solo (however, neither has gained any mainstream success).
