Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In January of 1989, Boys Club peaked in the top ten Billboard Chart songs with their hit song "I Remember Holding You". How should the lyrics to this song be completed? "I remember holding you Feeling felt so right Now I find I'm reaching ____________ In the middle of the night"

Answer: out

Boys Club have, by many music critics, long been compared to the early 1980s band WHAM! The band consisted of The Jets famed vocalist Eugene Wolfgramm and English comediean Joe Pasquale. Their hit song peaked at number eight on January 14, 1989. Unfortunately, this would be the only success for this short-lived 80s R&B duo.
2. In 1989, there was a one hit wonder band that managed to peak at number one. Oddly enough, the band Sheriff would be one of the few bands to have a successful one hit wonder song after the band had already split up. "When I'm With You" has become a reknowned love song. How should the introductory lyrics to this song be completed? "I never needed love like I need you And I never lived for ___________, but I live for you Oooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you"

Answer: nobody

"When I'm With You" is said to be about a woman that keyboardist Arnold Lanni fell in love with named Valeri. After meeting Valeri, he went home, sat down on his piano, and nearly wrote the entire song in one sitting. As it turned out, his band members would love the song, and Arnold and Valeri would marry two years after the song was written.
3. Featured on a 1989 episode of Miami Vice, "What I Am" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians would eventually peak in the top ten on the Billboard Charts. It would be their only chart topper. How should this unique set of lyrics to their hit song be completed? "I'm not aware of too many things, I know what I know if you know what I mean. Philosophy is the talk on a _______________. Religion is the smile on a dog."

Answer: cereal box

Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians were a band that originated during the 1980s and are best known for their song "What I Am". The were originally classified as a "ska" band earlier on in their careers, but by the late 1980s, their classification had been changed to "rock". Between 1988 and 2006, they recorded four music albums.

Their 1988 album "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" was the only one to gain any mainstream success. "What I Am" peaked on the Billboard charts at number seven, while their second release from the album "Circle" would peak at a disappointing number fourty-eight. To date, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians have only had one song reaching the Billboard top forty.
4. Probably better known for his role as the lead singer and guitarist for Cheap Trick, Robin Zander would go on to record a one hit wonder song as a solo artist in 1989. "Surrender To Me" peaked at number six on the Billboard Charts in March of that year. How should the lyrics from the "Tequila Sunrise" soundtrack be completed? "Is it that we've been together much too long? The answer may not be _______________. We're always trying to prove who's right or wrong, Yet now we're giving up without a fight. But I know when you're gone, I'll wish I held on."

Answer: in black and white

As a solo artist, Robin Zander released three singles; only one of which gained any success in the music industry. On March 11, 1989, "Surrender To Me" peaked on the charts. Zander would not record this song alone, but rather, as a duo with popular Heart singer Ann Wilson.

In recent years, Zander continues to record songs and often plays minor roles in popular films. To date, Zander has made cameo appearances in films such as "Tequila Sunrise, "Say Anything", and "Daddy Day Care".
5. "Heaven Help Me" was a big time hit for former Wham! bassist Deon Estus in April 1989. How should the lyrics to this popular chorus be completed? "Heaven help me heaven help me Talk to ____________"

Answer: strangers

After performing as a bassist and singer for Wham!, Deon Estus recorded and released his one and only solo album "Spell" in 1988. "Heaven Help Me" peaked at number three on the Billboard top 40 in April 1989, however, that would be the only song to gain any success from his debut album.
6. Versions of the hit song "Iko Iko" date as far back as the 1920s. In 1983, The Belle Stars released their version of "Iko Iko", however, it was not until the soundtrack for the film "Rainman" came out in 1988, that they would have success with the song. According to the lyrics, what is grandma going to set on fire? "My grandma and your grandma Sitting by the fire My grandma says to your grandma "I'm gonna set your ___________ on fire"

Answer: flag

In 1965, "Iko Iko" peaked at number twenty on the Billboard charts for the Dixie Cups. Over twenty years later, it would peak at number fourteen for The Belle Stars. The Belle Stars formed in 1980 in England and would disband in 1986 after having next to little success during this stint.

It was two years after they had disbanded that they had their first top 40 hit. After being included on the soundtrack for "Rainman", The Belle Stars would finally see their hard earned work turn into a Billboard success.
7. During its original release in 1985, "Where Are You Now?" by Jimmy Harnen and Synch received very little airtime and peaked on the Billboard charts at number seventy-seven. Four years later, the song reappeared on the music scene, but this time, it would gain a tremendous amount of airtime. It peaked at number ten in June 1989. How should the chorus to this one hit wonder song be completed? "Where are you now? Is someone there _______________ Holding what was mine?"

Answer: tonight?

Raised in Pennsylvania, Jimmy Harnen began his musical career in high school in 1985 while playing in the school band. By the end of 1985, Harnen was also in a local band called Synch. He was their drummer and had a limited role as a singer. In 1989, however, on one of the few songs Harnen sang on, he, along with the band, became an instant success, peaking at number ten.

Unfortunately, this would be Synch's only Billboard hit and they would enter the realm of the one hit wonders by the end of 1989.
8. Love and Rockets consisted of former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins. Unlike Bauhaus' style as a gothic rock group, Love and Rockets tended to perform alternative rock music. According to the lyrics, what is his head "filled" with? "My head is full of ____________, baby, And I can't share this with you."

Answer: magic

When Ash, David J, and Haskins formed as Love and Rockets in 1985, it was their main goal to move away from their original gothic style. This became evident when they recorded their first release "Ball of Confusion" in 1985. Their original style was completely disguised and unrecognizable to Bauhaus fans.

Although it did not make the Billboard top 40, "Ball of Confusion" was their path to success. By 1989, Love and Rockets had released four albums. Their 1989 release "Love and Rockets" peaked at number fourteen in the United States. To top off the success, their song "So Alive" went to number three on the Billboard charts by August of 1989. Following their 1989 success, Love and Rockets would go on to record three more albums, a greatest hit record, and a live album.

Unfortunately, like many bands of the 80s, "So Alive" would be their one and only claim to fame.
9. Hailing from Canada, the Jeff Healey Band gained notoriety as their lead singer, Jeff Healey, had the ability to play a guitar even though he was legally blind in both eyes. Unfortunately, their song "Angel Eyes" would be the only hit they would have on the Billboard top 40. How should the lyrics to this popular song be completed? "Girl, you're looking fine tonight, and every guy has got you in his sights What you're doing with a ___________ like me, Is surely one of life's little mysteries"

Answer: clown

Successful in their homeland of Canada, The Jeff Healey Band would only have one top 40 hit in the United States. Written by popular song writer John Hiatt, "Angel Eyes" peaked at number five in the United States. "Angel Eyes" would be included on the soundtrack for the movie "Roadhouse" featuring Patrick Swayze and The Jeff Healey band would make a cameo performance in the movie. Jeff Healey lost the sight in both of his eyes due to a rare cancer of the eyes known as "retinoblastoma". Tragically, in March 2008, he would succumb to this disease leaving behind his wife and two children.
10. Closing out the 1990s, Kix would go into the record book as a one hit wonder band when their hit song "Don't Close Your Eyes" peaked at number eleven on December 16. They disbanded in 1995, but then reformed with different band members (albeit, with little success) in 2003. How should the lyrics to this glam rock song be completed? "So you think you're a little bit wild In the middle __________________"

Answer: of a suicide

Kix formed in 1978 as a glam rock band, however, it would not be until 1989 when they would have any of their releases peak on the Billboard charts. By this point, they had already released three albums with little success. Their 1988 album "Blow My Fuse" was the only one to gain any success (going platinum) and included their hit song "Don't Close Your Eyes".
