Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As usual we start with the first single to reach number one. Staying at number one for two weeks from the 15th January 1964 was 'Glad All Over' by The Dave Clark --- what number followed the name of the group?

Answer: 5

'Glad All Over' was the band's only number one hit in the UK and reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

*Useless information* The Dave Clark Five were the second British band to appear on the 'Ed Sullivan Show' after 'Glad All Over' knocked the Beatles 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' off of the UK number one spot. From there they went on to make a further 17 appearances on the the show.
In their ten year career they had nine UK Top 20 hits and 14 top 20 hits in the US.
2. The Beatles only had three number one hits in 1964, but how long, in total, were they at number one?

Answer: 11 weeks

The longest run for the Beatles was five weeks with the song 'I Feel Fine', this reached number one on the 10th December and stayed there until 14th January 1965. Their other two number ones were 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Can't Buy Me Love' which both stayed on the top spot for three weeks.

*Useless information* 'Can't Buy Me Love' is the only single recorded by the Beatles (in English) that was not recorded in the UK (it was recorded in France in January 1964). It is also one of only a small number of records by the Beatles that were recorded in German.
'A Hard Day's Night' holds the distinction of being the first album and single combination to take all four number one spots in both the UK album and singles charts AND the US album and singles charts at the same time.
3. Cilla Black had her first number one hit in 1964 with 'Anyone Who Had A Heart'. What was Cilla's birth name?

Answer: Priscilla White

It is claimed that the name Cilla Black was due to an article in a magazine where her name was 'misprinted' as Cilla Black instead of Cilla White.
Cilla Black only had two number one hits in the UK and both of these were in 1964. 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' remained at the top for three weeks and 'You're My World' was at number one for four weeks.

*Useless information* 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' was originally written for Dionne Warwick. Both versions were released onto the UK market at about the same time. Warwick's version peaked at number 47 the same week that Black's version reached number one.
4. The Rolling Stones had two number ones in 1964, the first was 'It's All Over Now'. What was the second?

Answer: Little Red Rooster

'It's All Over Now' was the Stone's fifth single and their first number one hit in the UK (it peaked at number 26 in the US). It was originally recorded by the American group The Valentino's who reached number 94 on the US Hot 100 charts.
'Little Red Rooster' was recorded by the Rolling Stones in Chicago but was never released in the states.

*Useless information* in 2004 The Rolling Stones were listed at number four in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time chart and are ranked as the second most successful group on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. Billy J. Kramer had a number one hit in 1964 with a song which included the following lyrics: "I wish they would go away... Little children, now why aren't you playin' outside? I'm askin' you. You can't fool me, 'cause I'm gonna know if you hide And try to peek I'm gonna treat you to a movie Stop your gigglin', children do be nice Like little sugars and spice" What was the title?

Answer: Little Children

'Little Children' was written by J. Leslie McFarland and Mort Shuman. It reached number one in the UK and number seven on the Billboard 100 charts in the same year.

*Useless information* Billy J. Kramer was managed by Brian Epstein who was also the manager of The Beatles. Kramer was offered the chance of recording a Lennon and McCartney song, 'One and One is Two', he chose 'Little Children' and hit the top UK spot. 'One and One is Two' was released later that year by The Strangers with Mike Shannon and did not chart.
6. Roy Orbison had a record at number one for two weeks from the 8th October. This record regained the number one spot on the 12th of November for a further week. Which Sandie Shaw record took the number one spot from Roy Orbison for three weeks before giving it back to him?

Answer: (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me

'Oh, Pretty Woman' was the second Roy Orbison track to reach number one in the UK in 1964, the first was 'It's Over' which held the number one spot for two weeks in June 1964.

Sandie Shaw's '(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me' was first recorded by Dionne Warwick, as a demo, in 1963. A version recorded by Lou Johnson reached number 49 on the Billboard 100 charts in 1964.

*Useless information* Sandy Shaw was the first British act to win the Eurovision Song Contest (Puppet on a String in 1967). It is also claimed that she was the first artist ever known to release a cover version of a Led Zeppelin song ('Your Time is Gonna Come' recorded by Sandie on her album 'Reviewing the Situation' in 1969).

Oh and of course, she never wore shoes on stage.
7. The Kinks, who had their first number one in 1964 with 'You Really Got Me', were the first Manchester based group ever to reach number one in the UK charts.

Answer: False

How could anyone think that The 'Muswell Hillbillies' were from Manchester? No they were a london based band and in my opinion one of the best bands of the 1960s.
'You Really Got Me' was the group's third single release and the first one to chart in the UK, reaching number one for two weeks in September 1964.

*Useless information* There is a persistent rumour that the guitar solo on the recording was played by Jimmy Page, a rumour that is vehemently denied by both Jimmy and The Kinks.

'Rolling Stone' magazine placed 'You've Really Got Me' at number 82 on their list of the '500 Greatest Songs of All Time' and at number four on the list of '100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time'.
8. The number one records in the UK charts in 1964 were mainly by British bands. How many different American acts became chart toppers in the UK in that year?

Answer: 2

Roy Orbison and The Supremes were the ONLY non-British acts to reach the number one spot in 1964.
Roy Orbison's 'It's Over' reached number one on 25th June for two weeks. 'Oh, Pretty Woman' stayed in the number one spot for a total of three weeks.

The Supremes 'Baby Love' were at number one for one week in November.
9. The Honeycombs had a number one hit in 1964 with 'Have I the Right?'. Were they British or American?

Answer: British

'Have I The Right?' was the only number one hit for the shortlived UK group known as the Honeycombs. Of the other eight singles they released, only three broke into the UK top 40 and the group disbanded in 1966.

*Useless information* The Honeycombs were known as being one of the few groups of the era to have a female drummer, Honey Lantree.

Th Honeycombs released 'Have I The Right?' in Germany in October 1964 reaching number 21 in the German charts. They also released a version in German 'Hab ich das Recht?', coincidentally this version also charted at number 21 in Germany in November 1964.
10. The Christmas number one in the 1964 UK charts was by The Beatles. Which song was this?

Answer: I Feel Fine

The second successive Christmas number one for The Beatles was 'I Feel Fine' - after 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' was at number one for Christmas 1963.

*Useless information* Although The Who, Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks were known for using feedback in their recordings, 'I Feel Fine' is believed to be the first record to deliberately use feedback as a recording effect.
