Answer: The Beatles

"Can't Buy Me Love" sang the fab four, a number one in the UK and US. It was number one when The Beatles held the top five chart places on the US chart in 1964.

The Beach Boys finally had a UK top ten hit this year with their US number one "I Get Around". Gerry and The Pacemakers just missed their fourth number one with "I'm The One". It stalled at number two in the UK and only got to number 82 in the US. The Animals had a UK and US number one this year with "The House Of The Rising Sun". It was their only hit to reach the number one spot.
2. Who could not go anywhere without remembering her boyfriend with these lyrics? "I was born to love you And I will never be free"

Answer: Sandie Shaw

"(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" sang Sandie Shaw. It was the first of three UK number ones in the 60s for Sandie who always performed in her bare feet.

Lulu reached number seven in the UK with her cover version of "Shout". It crept into the US chart at 94 in 1964. Doris Day had many hits in the UK and US in the 40s and 50s and she had a UK number eight hit with "Move Over Darling" in 1964. Dusty Springfield's biggest UK hit in 1964 was "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself". It reached number three but never charted in the US.

Answer: Herman's Hermits

Herman's Hermits was the group and "I'm Into Something Good" was the song. It was their only UK number one and reached number 13 in the US. They had two number ones in the US: "Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" and "I'm Henry The VIII, I Am" neither of which entered the UK chart.

The Hollies had 18 UK top ten hits and just missed a UK number one with a cover of "Just One Look" at number two in 1964; it reached number 98 in the US the same year. The Rockin' Berries had two UK top ten hits, "He's In Town" reached number three in 1964. The Newbeats had a UK number 15 with "Bread And Butter" in 1964, a US number two.

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

The Dave Clark Five sang the thumping track "Glad All Over". A UK number one and US number six in 1964, their only UK number one.

Thr Migil Five only had one UK top ten hit "Mockingbird Hill", getting to number ten in 1964. The Four Seasons had a UK number two with "Rag Doll" in 1964, it became their fourth US number one. The Four Pennies only had one top ten hit in the UK "Juliet", it went to number one in 1964.

Answer: The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones sang "It's All Over Now". It was the first of their two UK number one hits in 1964, it reached number 26 on the US chart.

The Pretty Things had one UK top ten hit "Don't Bring Me Down", it reached number ten in 1964. Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders had a UK number five hit with "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, in 1964. It was a cover of the US number five hit of Major Lance which only got to number 40 in the UK. The Valentinos had a US number 94 with the original version of "It's All Over Now" in 1964. It was written by group member Bobby Womack.

The Supremes were the group and "Baby Love" was the song. It was their first and only UK number one but was the second of 12 US number one hits.

Martha and The Vandellas had a US number two in 1964 with "Dancing In The Street". It reached number 28 in the UK but was re-released in 1969 and reached number four. The Shangri-las had a US number one in 1964 with "Leader Of The Pack". In the UK it got to number 11 in 1965, number three in 1973 and number seven on two different labels in 1976. The Dixie Cups had a US number one in 1964 with "Chapel Of Love", it reached number 22 in the UK.

Answer: Roy Orbison

Roy Orbison sang "Oh, Pretty Woman". It was his third and last UK number one and his second and last US number one. The 'Big O' made a comeback on the singles chart and with the super group The Traveling Wilburys in the late 80s.

Elvis Presley only had one UK top ten hit in 1964 "Kissin' Cousins", it reached number 12 on the US chart. Cliff Richard had five UK top ten chart hits in 1964. One, "I'm The Lonely One" made the US chart at number 92. Del Shannon recorded "Oh, Pretty Woman" as an album track but only had two minor UK hits in 1964, "Mary Jane" at number 35 and "Handy Man" at number 36.

This year Brenda Lee had her last UK top ten hit "As Usual" at number five, it reached number 12 in the US. Not a Lennon/McCartney song like their first three chart hits, it reached number seven on the US chart. This year Manfred Mann had the first of three UK number ones with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". It also reached number one on the US chart. This year The Kinks had their first UK number one with their first chart hit "You Really Got Me", it reached number seven on the US chart.

Answer: The Beatles

"I Feel Fine" by The Beatles was their third UK number one of 1964. It was their sixth US number one of 1964. Beatlemania was well under way world wide.

The Mojos, yet another Liverpool group had three UK chart hits. The first "Everything's Alright" reached number nine in 1964. Brian Poole and The Tremeloes had a UK number two with a Crickets song "Someone Someone" in 1964, it reached number 97 on the US chart. The Yardbirds had a minor UK chart hit in 1964 with "Good Morning Little School Girl" at number 44.
