Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did The House of Windsor officially get founded?

Answer: 1917

Many sources may suggest that The House of Windsor began at the moment of King George V's ascension in 1910. However, the House of Windsor officially began in the year 1917, with the change of family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha that came while Britain was at war with Germany.
2. On what month did Edward VIII officially abdicate the throne?

Answer: December 1936

Since he wouldn't be able to marry Wallis Simpson and make her his queen Edward abdicated. In the presence of his brothers, Edward abdicated the throne in favor of his brother Prince Albert, Duke of York, who ruled as King George VI.
Edward had reigned for less than twelve months, 327 days to be precise.
3. Whom did George VI, then The Duke of York, marry in 1923?

Answer: Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon

He initially proposed to Elizabeth three times: 1921, 1922 and 1923 the year she finally accepted.
They were later married on 26 April 1923, at Westminster Abbey.
Unexpectedly, Elizabeth laid her bouquet at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior on her way into the Abbey.
4. How many days separated Elizabeth and Philip's first wedding anniversary and the birth of Prince Charles?

Answer: Six Days

Elizabeth II and Philip were married on November 20, 1947 and their first child Charles Philip Arthur George was born on November 14, 1948.
So that would make a six day difference.
5. Along with morphine, what substance was King George V given to hasten his death along?

Answer: Cocaine

The King's doctor administered a lethal injection of cocaine and morphine, both to prevent further strain on the family and so that the King's death could be announced in the morning edition of 'The Times' newspaper.
6. What title was granted to Edward VIII following his abdication?

Answer: The Duke of Windsor

On December 12, 1936 the day of his ascension George VI made Edward The Duke of Windsor and re-instated him as a knight of the realm.
Those titles didn't come into effect until March 8 the following year. His wife Wallis would never be granted the title of HRH.
7. What ailment did King George VI suffer from later in his life?

Answer: Lung Cancer

The King was a heavy smoker, a vice that caused him to develop lung cancer.
He had one lung removed to save his life but it only delayed the inevitable. While Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were in Kenya word came to her that she was now Queen. Philip had broken the news to her.
On a personal note telling someone that someone had died is never easy.
8. Whose purse did four-year-old Prince Charles play with during his mother's coronation?

Answer: The Queen Mother

The Queen Mother gave her grandson her purse to occupy him during his mother's coronation. While he may have been heir to the throne, to expect a four-year-old to stay still at a coronation for many hours was too ambitious; perhaps he should have stayed home.
9. Whose death prompted Charles, Prince of Wales to delay his wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles by one day?

Answer: Pope John Paul II

It was announced that the marriage would be delayed by twenty-four hours to allow The Prince of Wales and some of his invited dignitaries to attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
10. Who acted as chaperone when Charles took Diana to an opera and dinner during their courtship?

Answer: Ruth Lady Fermoy, her grandmother

Lady Ruth Fermoy was a lady-in-waiting and friend of The Queen Mother.
She is also Diana's maternal grandmother and mother to Frances Shand Kydd.
Both sets of grandmothers encouraged the match between Prince Charles and Lady Diana.
