Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first ballerina to dance the role of "Giselle"?

Answer: Carlotta Grisi

Grisi premiered the role in both Paris and London.
2. Emma Livry was the ill fated pupil of Marie Taglioni. How did her tragic death occur?

Answer: Her dress caught fire during rehearsal and she died as a result of her burns.

"Le Papillon" was a ballet that Taglioni created for Livry. The poor girl suffered for eight months due to her burns, before she eventually died.
3. Which of the following was not rumored to have had an affair with Carlotta Grisi at one stage or another?

Answer: Benjamin Lumley

Benjamin Lumley was the manager of Her Majesty's Theatre, London, and he did hire Grisi, but was never rumored to have had a personal relationship with her. Theophile Gautier was infatuated with her, he wrote "Giselle" and many love poems for her, and he married her sister. Perrot was her teacher, and many claimed that she was also his mistress. Petipa was her partner in many ballets, including "Giselle" and "La Peri", and some people claimed that they were personally involved.

Some books on ballet include all the gossip!
4. Which dancer did not participate in the famous "Pas De Quatre" of 1845?

Answer: Fanny Elssler

The rivalry between Elssler and Taglioni was judged to be too great to allow for them to dance together. The fourth ballerina was Lucile Grahn.
5. Who danced the part of "Albrecht" in the London premiere of "Giselle"?

Answer: Jules Perrot

Lucien Petipa was the first to dance the part of Albrecht in the Paris premiere of the ballet. Perrot was co-choreographer. Adam was the composer. Marius was Lucien's older brother, and went on to become one of the most famous choreographers ever ("Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty" and many more).
6. Where was Lucile Grahn born?

Answer: Copenhagen

The youngest of the five great ballerinas of the period, Grahn was best known for her performance in the 1836 version of "La Sylphide", which is the one known to us today.
