Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which billionaire, a leader in the movie and aviation industries, became a total recluse, terrified of germs and contact with people?

Answer: Howard Hughes

Howard Hughes was a brilliant man. He produced and directed movies, such as "The Outlaw" with Jane Russell. He was rumoured to have invented the under-wired bra for her especially for this movie He was an aviator and built the plane "The Spruce Goose".

He suffered from a fear of dirt and germs as well as social avoidance disorder, and the combination of these two things ultimately led to him leading a completely reclusive and increasingly bizarre life. He refused to have his hair or nails trimmed and moved from hotel to hotel (most of which he owned).

At the time of his death in 1976 he was suffering from malnutrition and kidney failure.
2. Which American businessman, television personality and author has admitted he has a germ phobia? Let's hope he doesn't pass it on to his apprentice.

Answer: Donald Trump

Donald Trump, of the distinctive hair style and star of "The Apprentice" in America, refuses to press the ground floor buttons in lifts. His fear of germs also means that he refuses to shake hands with people, especially, for some unexplained reason, teachers.
3. With small children and a posh wife who likes to shop, which English footballer must find his obsession for perfection difficult to sustain?

Answer: David Beckham

David Beckham has to have everything in perfect order, and in pairs. If there are three of something on a table he has to either have one taken away or one added. Everything must be spotless, as he also has a germ phobia. His OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) is strong enough to mean that if everything is not ordered exactly the way he likes it he will be unable to rest or settle down until it has been put right.
4. Actress Cameron Diaz admits to wiping something, sometimes to excess, because of a fear of germs. What is it?

Answer: Door handles

Cameron Diaz has admitted that sometimes she wipes door handles so hard that the paint or finish starts to come off. This is due to a fear of germs left behind by other people. She has also said she washes her hands "many times a day", and tries to open doors with her elbow. Wiping door handles, toilet handles, banister rails, anything touched by a lot of people, is one of the most common forms of germ phobia.
5. Taking phobia to a new level, Michael Jackson probably suffered from BDD. What does this stand for?

Answer: Body Dysmorphic Disorder

With his multiple plastic surgeries, skin whitening treatments and face masks Michael Jackson displayed classic phobia symptoms. BDD is similar to OCD in that the sufferer cannot stop their behaviour. BDD can also manifest itself in eating disorders such as anorexia, where the sufferer cannot see their body as it is, only as it is in their mind.
6. Who was the actress who suffered from a fear of water and, ironically, died by drowning?

Answer: Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood's fear of water possibly dates back to being lied to on a film set when she was a child. She was assured a bridge she had to cross was safe when it was in fact rigged to collapse and throw her into the water. Whatever the cause, it is ironic that her cause of death was drowning.

She fell from the yacht she was on with husband, Robert Wagner. Why she was on deck late at night has never been established, but the official theory is that she was either trying to leave the yacht by dinghy, or secure the dinghy to stop it banging against the hull, and somehow slipped and fell overboard.
7. Christina Ricci will not have which common objects in her home because, in her words, "they are dirty"?

Answer: Houseplants

Christina Ricci will not have houseplants in her home, or even look at or handle them outside of her home. In addition to this she also has a fear of gerbils and of swimming pools. In the case of swimming pools she is convinced that if she is in one, especially if she is on her own, then a shark will appear and attack her.
8. It seems strange when an actor, who uses make-up as part of his job, has a fear of clowns because of their painted faces. Which of the following suffers from this phobia? (Hint, think pirates and chocolate).

Answer: Johnny Depp

The fear of clowns is quite widespread and normally starts in childhood. Many children are scared rather than entertained by clowns at a circus, mainly because of their somewhat bizarre make-up. Some clowns faces are quite scary, and the evil clown is now quite common as a theme in books such as "It".
9. Which member of the Osmond family has been very open about his/her struggles with social anxiety disorder?

Answer: Donny

Donny Osmond has openly discussed his problems. Manifestations of his phobia included panic attacks before stage appearances, far worse than normal stage fright, problems meeting large groups of fans and appearing at public events where he was publicising a show.

It is possible that his phobia has roots in him being a child performer, as he vividly recalls running off stage after a performance on The Andy Williams Show because he was scared of the applause and flashing lights. He was six at the time.
10. As Indiana Jones he has a fear of snakes, but what does Harrison Ford fear in real life?

Answer: Public speaking

Harrison Ford is a very private man, and whilst he loves his work he does not love the publicity that comes with it. He admits that he has a fear of public speaking and struggles to cope with this side of stardom. He has described public speaking, which includes chat show and other media interviews, as "a mixed bag of terror and anxiety".
