Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sin, or sins, was Eve guilty of that resulted in expulsion from the Garden of Eden?

Answer: Each of the options listed here

The Bible is the story of what it calls God's chosen people. Adam and Eve were the first. They lived in the Garden of Eden where God said to them, "You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat it you will surely die" (Genesis 3, ESV). Satan was in the garden, in the form of a serpent.

He put doubt about the truth of what God had said into Eve's mind and tempted her to disobey God. In turn she gave some fruit to Adam, so he too ate of it and disobeyed God. They were both expelled from the garden and had to live out their lives struggling to survive like everybody else.

They may have repented later, but the Bible does not say.
2. Who was turned into a pillar of salt because she disobeyed God by looking back instead of fleeing from the burning sulphur that rained down upon Sodom and Gomorrah?

Answer: Lot's wife

Lot was living in Sodom with his wife (only named Ildeth or Edith in Jewish folklore) and his two daughters. Two angels came as men to guide them to safety before God destroyed the city. One of the men said to them, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away" (Genesis 19, ESV). Later, we learn that "But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt" (ESV). Could it have been that she also looked back in her heart to what they had left behind, not just the foolish act of physically turning around to look? We can only surmise.

It may have been the burning sulphur that turned her to salt.
3. Why did the wife of Potiphar (an officer of the Pharaoh) have Joseph thrown into prison?

Answer: He refused to sleep with her

"Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, 'Come to bed with me!'" (Genesis 39, ESV). Joseph, a slave in Egypt, refused to commit adultery and to sin against God. Potiphar's wife tried several times without success, but when Joseph left his cloak, she used it to lie to Potiphar about Joseph, accusing him of molesting her. Potiphar was angry and threw Joseph in prison. Potiphar's wife isn't named in the Bible, but a Persian source gives her the name Zuleika.
4. Why did Delilah want to know the secret of Samson's great strength (such as how he could strike down a thousand men with the jaw-bone of a donkey)?

Answer: The rulers of the Philistines offered her silver

Samson fell in love with Delilah, so the Philistines bribed her with many shekels of silver to try to find the secret of his great strength. He played with her by giving false answers, but she kept nagging him until he eventually gave up and told her, "If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me and I would become as weak as any other man" (Judges 16, ESV).

When he was asleep, she shaved him and called the Philistines after which they blinded Samson and sent him to the treadmill. When his hair grew back, he called on God to give him strength to push down the central pillars of Dagon's temple. Delilah isn't mentioned again after the betrayal, so anything else is just Hollywood stories.
5. Which king of Israel was terrified by the Philistine army and so asked the witch (medium) of Endor to consult the spirit of the prophet Samuel?

Answer: Saul

Saul was the first king of Israel, chosen by God. He chose to rule his own way and moved away from God and God's ways until eventually God did not hear his prayers. He was afraid of the Philistine army, so he disguised himself and asked the medium of Endor to consult the spirit of Samuel. "When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice..." (1 Samuel ESV).

In Deuteronomy 18, it says, "Let no-one be found among you who ... practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord" (ESV).
6. What did Jezebel do just before she was put to death on King Jehu's orders?

Answer: Painted her eyes, arranged her hair and looked out of the window

"Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel... he did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him... he married Jezebel daughter of the king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him... while Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets" (1 Kings ESV). Later on in the Bible we read that Jehu was anointed king of Israel.

When Jezebel looked out of the window, Jehu ordered his loyal eunuchs to throw her down. She died a bloody and ignominious death. Her name is used in Revelation 2 to represent false prophesy, false teaching and idolatry in the church at Thyatira.
7. Who nursed a grudge against John the Baptist (because John spoke against her marriage to her brother-in-law) eventually seeing an opportunity that led to John being beheaded?

Answer: Herodias

King Herod Antipas had John the Baptist bound in prison because he spoke out against his unlawful marriage to Herodias. Herodias wanted to kill John, but she wasn't able to because Herod protected him. At a banquet, Salome, Herodias' daughter, came and danced, which pleased Herod. "The king said to the girl, 'Ask me for anything you want and I'll give it to you.' And he promised her with an oath.

She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' 'The head of John the Baptist,' Herodias answered" (Mark 6, ESV).

Herod had given his oath in front of guests, so he was unable to back out of it.
8. What was the name of the woman mentioned in Luke 7 who had lived a sinful life, but who came to Jesus and washed his feet with her tears, wiped them with her hair and poured perfume on them?

Answer: She is not named

"When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town (Nain) learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume..." (Luke 7, ESV). Later Jesus said to her "Your sins are forgiven" and "Your faith has saved you; go in peace" (ESV). She is never named. Some sources assume that it could be Mary Magdalene, but there is no evidence for this.
9. What does the Bible say about Mary Magdalene that implies that she had a sinful life before she encountered Jesus?

Answer: She was possessed by seven demons

"The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out..." (Luke 8, ESV). There is no mention in the Bible that she was a prostitute, so we do not know what her actual sins were. Mary Magdalene became a devoted follower of Jesus.

She witnessed his crucifixion, his burial and she was the first person to see the resurrected Jesus.
10. What was the name of the wife of Ananias? She and her husband both lied to the Holy Spirit by keeping money for themselves from the sale of some property, yet offering the rest and dishonestly declaring that as the price of the sale.

Answer: Sapphira

When Peter confronted Ananias about this sin against the Holy Spirit, Ananias fell down and died. "About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, 'Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?' 'Yes, that is the price.' Peter said to her, 'How could you agree to test the spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door and they will carry you out also.' At that moment, she fell down at his feet and died" (Acts 5, ESV).
