Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is generally considered to be the founding father of the Jewish nation of Israel?

Answer: Abraham

Originally known as Abram, God changed his name to Abraham, meaning father of a multitude. God promised Abraham that his descendants would form a great nation.
2. The twelve tribes of Israel came from the twelve sons of which Israelite patriarch, who did not need a ladder to move them around?

Answer: Jacob

Jacob, also known as Israel, was the son of Isaac and Rebecca and grandson of Abraham and Sarah. His sons were the progenitors of the twelve tribes of Israel. In a dream, which has come to be known as "Jacob's Ladder", Jacob had a vision of a ladder between earth and heaven, upon which angels traveled back and forth.

At the top of the ladder was God, who promised Jacob that his descendants would spread out in all directions and the land Jacob lived in would be their homeland. Jacob named that land Bethel (House of God).
3. After the death of Moses, who became the leader of the Israelites and "fit the battle of Jericho"?

Answer: Joshua

Joshua was the personally appointed successor to Moses. He and the Israelites conquered the city of Jericho and assimilated the land of Canaan. He then divided up the lands among the twelve tribes.
4. When the Israelites took possession of Canaan, Joshua gave most of the southern portion of the land, including Jerusalem, to which of the sons of Jacob?

Answer: Judah

Judah was the fourth son born to Jacob and Leah. From his tribe would come many kings; it was prophesied that the Messiah would come from its people. The tribe of Judah would eventually become so prominent that its history would become that of the Jewish people.
5. Family life sometimes seems not to move smoothly. One of the sons of Jacob was given a special coat, making his brothers jealous. Which son was it?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph was Jacob's favorite son. He gave him a coat of many colors, which made Joseph's brothers jealous. At one point, most of the brothers wanted to kill Joseph, but Judah suggested they sell him to merchants who would take him to Egypt to be a slave. Joseph was able to interpret dreams and after being taken to Egypt so impressed the Pharaoh that he was made a ruler second only to the Pharaoh himself.
6. Who was the prophet who changed Israel from the leadership of judges to the leadership of kings?

Answer: Samuel

A powerful and respected man, Samuel was chosen by God to anoint the first kings of Israel. Though a Levite who was not in favor of a monarchy, he did as God asked and so drew the tribe of Judah into the leadership of Israel. It marked the beginning of the united Kingdom of Israel and Judah.
7. "Kill the giant, win a crown". Sounds like a carnival game, but who did that and more and eventually became the second king of Israel?

Answer: David

David was a shepherd boy with great courage. He was said to have killed a lion and a bear. The prophet Samuel anointed him in the name of God. Humble, he continued his work until King Saul asked him to play music for him and he stayed with Saul. When the Philistines threatened the Kingdom of Israel, David offered to take on Goliath, a nine-foot Philistine warrior.

He killed Goliath but Saul was suspicious of him. Saul thought about having David killed several times but relented. When Saul and his son, Jonathan, were killed fighting on Mount Gilboa, David became the king.
8. He may or may not have had mines, but he was wealthy, known for his wisdom, and the son of David. Who was he?

Answer: Solomon

Solomon was the third king of Israel. Besides being possessed of great wisdom, a poet and builder of the first temple in Jerusalem, he was an astute businessman who forged an economic (and perhaps romantic) relationship with the Queen of Sheba. Not without enemies, he sometimes ruled by force.

He supposedly had a magic ring, known as the Seal of Solomon, which gave him power over demons. The magical symbol on the ring is now known as the Star of David.
9. Though the son and grandson of kings, he was not a good ruler. Who, whose name may sound like a Delaware beach town to Americans, caused a split among the tribes of Israel?

Answer: Rehoboam

Even before Solomon's death there was dissension in the kingdom. Rehoboam became king upon Solomon's death but unrest over some of his father's policies was more than he could placate. The ten northern tribes split to form the Kingdom of Israel, leaving him to rule the Kingdom of Judah in the south. A few years later, Egypt invaded and conquered Rehoboam's lands.
10. The power of the Kingdom of Judah waned and was subjugated by other nations, but which animal has always stood as the symbol of the tribe of Judah?

Answer: lion

The lion has stood as the symbol of Judah since the beginning when Jacob blessed his son Judah as a Gur Aryeh (young lion). The title would eventually be affixed to Jesus Christ, a descendant of David, of whom it was said in the book of Revelation in the New Testament: "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.

He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals." (NIV)
