Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Cup final of 2003 was won by a single goal. Who scored?

Answer: Robert Pires

French star Robert Pires converted the only goal of the game at Cardiff giving Arsenal victory over Southampton. It was Arsenal's ninth success in the competition, and their second in succession.
2. 1991 saw the infamous Gazza challenge, but which player scored a sensational free kick for the eventual losers that year?

Answer: Stuart Pearce

Pearce struck a venomous free kick into the roof of the goal for Nottingham Forest against Tottenham Hotspur. The London club, however, came out 2-1 winners and the game was remembered for an appalling challenge by Spurs midfielder Paul Gascoigne on Forest defender Gary Charles. Paul Stewart equalised the free kick before an own goal by Des Walker gave Tottenham their eighth success.
3. Chelsea won the cup in 1997 with a goal inside the first minute of the game, making it the fastest Cup Final goal in history. Who scored?

Answer: Roberto Di Matteo

42 seconds is all it took for Di Matteo to cement his name in history. It had stood at 45 seconds with previous holder Jackie Milburn's goal in the 1955 cup final. Eddie Newton later added a second as Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0.
4. The 1988 FA Cup final saw hot favourites Liverpool lose to unfancied Wimbeldon, by a single goal scored by Lawrie Sanchez. Who provided the cross that led to the headed winner?

Answer: Dennis Wise

The game of David vs Goliath. The Kings of English football against the not-so-long-ago non league outfit. Liverpool vs Wimbledon conjured up a fairytale story and a result to match. The only goal came in the first half from a Dennis Wise corner headed in by Sanchez. Wimbledon keeper Dave Beasant also made history when he became the first keeper in Cup final history to save a penalty, from John Aldridge's poor effort.
5. 1972 was the Centenary Cup Final. Leeds United defeated the defending FA Cup holders, and double-champion, Arsenal thanks to a headed goal by which England international?

Answer: Allan Clarke

The centenary cup final pitched the previous year's double winners Arsenal against the potential double winners Leeds United. Allan Clarke scored the only goal of the game to give Leeds the Cup, and then they had to play on Monday night at Molineux to win the League title (and the double).

However, they unbelievably lost their last game ( a draw would have given them the title) and ended up as runners up to Derby County.
6. Which team was the first to reach the Cup Final three years in succession, on two separate occasions?

Answer: Arsenal

Arsenal made the finals of 1978-79-80 (won one) and repeated the feat 23 years later in 2001-02-03 (won two).

They lost 0-1 in 1978 to Ipswich Town, beat Manchester United 3-2 in 1979, then lost 0-1 to West Ham United in 1980. They lost 1-2 to Liverpool in 2001, beat Chelsea in 2002 by 2-0, and then Southampton 1-0 in 2003.
7. Arsenal won the 2003 FA Cup Final: How many Cup final wins did that make for Arsenal, combined with Manchester Unitedd's and Aston Villa's successes?

Answer: 26

Twenty six times these three sides had won it.

United had won ten times: 1909, 1948, 1963, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1996 and 1999.
Arsenal had won it nine times: 1930, 1936, 1950, 1971, 1979, 1993, 1998, 2002, and 2003.
Aston Villa had won seven cups: 1887, 1895, 1897, 1905, 1913, 1920 and 1957.
8. Who was the last player to score a hat trick in an FA Cup Final at Wembley?

Answer: Stan Mortensen

The famous 1953 Cup final between Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers, better known as the 'Matthew's final'. Blackpool ran out 4-3 winners with Mortensen notching the first and last hat trick in an FA Cup Final played at Wembley. Matthew's wizardry on the wing for Blackpool was and still is to this day regarded as one of the greatest performances ever witnessed.
9. Who won the 1939 Cup final by a shock 4-1 margin?

Answer: Portsmouth

Wolves had finished runners up in the Championship whilst Portsmouth had struggled for goals all season (1938-39), finishing just above the relagtion zone at 17th out of 22. However, the tables were turned and Portsmouth destroyed their opponents with their best attacking game of the season. War broke out six months later and therefore Portsmouth held the record for the longest amount of time a team has held the cup, seven years (the next FA Cup Final was played in 1946).
10. How many of the ten finals played from 1890 to 1899 were won by teams from the Midlands of England (i.e. Birmingham, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire clubs)?

Answer: 6
