Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team with a bird theme joined the Major Leagues in 1977?

Answer: Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays joined the American League with Roy Hartsfield at the helm in 1977. They only won 54 games, then 59, then 53 in 1979 under him. Under Bobby Cox in 1985, the Blue Jays won their division. They hit the World Series under Cito Gaston in 1992.
2. Of the Major League bird teams, which franchise won the most World Series in the first 100 years of the Major Leagues?

Answer: Cardinals

The Orioles won three, the Blue Jays two consecutive in 1992 and 1993, but it was the Cardinals who won nine in 15 appearances. The Cardinals' heyday was from 1926-1946.
3. Which of these 'bird' teams had more than one team name in prior years?

Answer: Orioles

The original Oriole franchise came to Maryland in 1954. The franchise originally started as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901, then moved to St. Louis to become the Browns in 1902 until 1953.
4. Of the 'bird' teams, which of the following players retired with the most career home runs?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The others weren't 'birds'. Robinson was the only bird listed. After playing with the Reds for 10 seasons, Frank came to Baltimore in 1966 to win the AL Triple Crown. He retired with 586 home runs.
5. Which non-uglybird team had four 20-game winners in a season?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

1971 saw the tremendous pitching staff of the Orioles. Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson, and Jim Palmer all won 20 games in the season. Dave McNally topped them all with his 21. Although going 21-5, McNally still finished fourth in the Cy Young voting behind Vida Blue, Mickey Lolich, and Wilbur Wood.
6. Which uglybird franchise had a 3'7" midget once appear as a pinch-hitter in a game?

Answer: Orioles

The well-documented incident occurred in 1951 with the St. Louis Browns (later the Orioles in 1954). Little Eddie Gaedel came to the plate to pinch-hit under the scheme of Browns' owner Bill Veeck. The pitcher, Bob Cain of the Detroit Tigers laughed so hard that he walked Eddie on four pitches. Major League baseball changed the rules after this incident.
7. Which bird team had a pitcher that set a modern day Major League record for a 1.12 ERA in a single season?

Answer: Cardinals

In 1968, Bob Gibson ruled the National League with his 22-9 record along with his remarkable 1.123 ERA. For his efforts, he won the NL MVP and the Cy Young awards. He helped the Cardinals all the way to the World Series, and won it all over AL MVP and Cy Young winner Denny McLain and his Tigers.
8. From 1947-1955, this franchise won over 60 games in a season only one time. Which uglybird franchise was this?

Answer: Orioles

As the St. Louis Browns, the team just couldn't muster anything. Having six managers in that time frame didn't help either. The franchise won its first World Series in 1966 under the reins of Hank Bauer as the Orioles.
9. Which bird team was the first to win two consecutive World Series?

Answer: Blue Jays

The Blue Jays won the 1992 and 1993 World Series with the helping home runs from Joe Carter. They defeated the Braves and the Phillies four games to two in both series.
10. Which 2006 bird franchise was the first to have a player inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Orioles

It was George Sisler who played for the St. Louis Browns, which team later became the Orioles. Sisler set a Major League record for his 257 hits in a season in 1920. He was inducted into the hall in 1939 in the hall's third year.
