Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kansas City, Missouri, USA

Answer: Scouts

The Kansas City Scouts were founded in 1974. They were not successful in Kansas City and after only two seasons, the franchise moved to Denver, Colorado and became the Colorado Rockies. Things were not much better in Colorado and six seasons later, the team moved again in 1982 and became the New Jersey Devils.
2. Oakland, California, USA

Answer: Seals

The Seals were introduced to the NHL in 1967 as the California Seals. Midway through the 1967 season they changed their name to the Oakland Seals. Three years later, they changed their name again to the California Golden Seals. In 1976, the Seals would move out of California, leaving the Bay Area without a team until the San Jose Sharks debuted in 1991.
3. Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Answer: Maroons

The Montreal Maroons were the one of three NHL teams that once called Montreal home. The others are the Montreal Canadiens, who still exist today, and Montreal Wanderers, who lasted only one season in the NHL (1917-1918). The Maroons played from 1924-1938 and claimed two Stanley Cup championships.
4. Brooklyn, New York, USA

Answer: Americans

The New York/Brooklyn Americans played in the NHL from 1925-1942. They played in Madison Square Garden where they shared a home with the New York Rangers. The team had intentions of moving to Brooklyn in 1942, but could not find a suitable arena to play at and had suspended play due to World War II. After the war the team officially folded.
5. Hartford, Connecticut, USA

Answer: Whalers

The Hartford Whalers were initially based in Boston as the New England Whalers and were part of the WHA (World Hockey Association). In 1979, after the NHL and WHA leagues merged, the Whalers moved to Hartford, Connecticut. In 1997, the Whalers would move again, this time to North Carolina where they became the Carolina Hurricanes.
6. Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Answer: Nordiques

The Quebec Nordiques debuted in 1972 in the city of Quebec City. The Nordiques moved to Denver, Colorado in 1995 where they became the Colorado Avalanche. The franchise did not win any Stanley Cups as the Quebec Nordiques, but have won a few since moving out to Colorado.
7. Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Answer: Barons

The Barons moved into Cleveland, Ohio in 1976. Unfortunately, the team could not establish a strong fan base in Cleveland and they were forced to merge with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978. The North Stars would later move to Dallas, Texas in 1993 and became the Dallas Stars.
8. Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Answer: Thrashers

The Atlanta Thrashers were founded in 1999 and were tenants at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. This was the second NHL team to call Atlanta home, with the first being the Atlanta Flames who moved to Calgary in 1980. In 2011, the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where they were renamed the Winnipeg Jets.

The original Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1996, where they became the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes.
9. Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Answer: Tigers

The Hamilton Tigers were founded in 1878, a few decades before the NHL had even formed. In 1920, the Hamilton Tigers eventually joined the NHL. However, in 1925 a strike crippled the team and they were forced to fold. The Tigers had played at Barton Street Arena in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, which was torn down in 1977.
10. St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Answer: Eagles

The St. Louis Eagles began their life as the original Ottawa Senators in 1883. The Senators would capture eleven Stanley Cup championships, most of which were won before the NHL even formed. In 1934, the Senators moved to St. Louis where they played for one season before the franchise eventually folded. In 1967, the St. Louis Blues joined the NHL.
