Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Al Pacino movie was immortalized in a Wii game in June 2007?

Answer: Scarface

"Scarface: The World is Yours" was regarded as a popular game, though it was initially released on the previous generation of systems (PS2, Xbox, and PC). Despite this, however, the game received mixed reviews, some really high, some low. Regardless, the game added to the quickly growing cache of Mature-rated games for the system, which (in terms of the Gamecube) had been regarded as a lost cause. Due to Nintendo's image as a company aimed at a more youthful audience, "Scarface" helped spur the release of more 'M' games such as "Manhunt 2", "Resident Evil", and "No More Heroes"; all of which have become very popular, and which have scored high in terms of their reviews. This hasn't been the only "Scarface" game released though. "Scarface: Money. Power. Respect." was released on the PSP less than a year earlier.

It was a low-scoring turn-based simulator.
2. Which "Resident Evil" title was remade for the Wii and released in 2007?

Answer: Resident Evil 4

The original "Resident Evil 4" was a hit. First appearing on the Gamecube, this game was cited as 'Game of the Year' by numerous gaming websites and magazines, and due to its popularity, became a Player's Choice title for the system. Despite the fact the game was initially going to be exclusive for the Gamecube, it was later ported to the PS2 and PC.

In 2007, the game was brought to the Wii. "Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition", was named by IGN as the Best Wii Shooter to date after its release in June despite the fact that it was a remake.

As well, rather than control the unique third-person shooter with a controller, it had become (partially) a point-and-shoot light-gun game with the Wii remote, further enhancing interactivity. Despite this, players can still use the classic controller to play although the Wii Zapper peripheral wasn't introduced until "Umbrella Chronicles" was released later in 2007.
3. Released in June 2007, which baseball game from 2K Sports appeared for the Wii?

Answer: The Bigs

"The Bigs" was a moderately-received baseball game on all platforms, but considering the obvious lack of baseball games for the Wii at the time (save the baseball game on "Wii Sports", the widest released game for the system), it sold more than a few copies. Since the release of "The Bigs", various baseball games from reliable brands such as EA and 2KSports have popped up on the game list for the system. Although the game has somewhat of an arcade feel to it, players may find it a bit more authentic than other games to cross the same path.

Although players can still work on the rosters, they can also create players and work their way through to the end of the World Series. The game supports up to four players, but no online play on the Wii.
4. Was "Pokémon Battle Revolution" a sequel to the Gamecube game "Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness"?

Answer: No

Although "Battle Revolution" was quite popular, it was not critically favoured as it somewhat lacked any single player features- something "Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2" had on the Nintendo 64. However, the game was notable for being the first to both connect to the internet (for battles with friends and random opponents through WiiConnect24) and to connect wi-fi with the Nintendo DS (if players had "Pokémon Diamond and Pearl").
The game was well done graphically as well though. All of the individual Pokémon has special positions when using certain skills and all of the battle coliseums were colourful and detailed. Players could control either with the Wii Remote or the DS (if they had "Diamond" or "Pearl"), but without those DS games, there really wasn't much to do in the game itself.
The game had very little to do with "Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness", and for that matter, "Pokemon Colosseum" for the Gamecube as both were meant to integrate more role-playing features as opposed to arenas.
5. Released in July 2007, which Wii game was the sequel of a sci-fi Sega game of the same name?

Answer: Alien Syndrome

The Wii version of "Alien Syndrome" was not entirely well-received, but it stayed seemingly true to the original versions of "Alien Syndrome", which were ported onto various consoles from 1987 to 1992 including the NES and Sega Game Gear. Originally made by Sega, the reins of the new "Alien Syndrome" were manned by Totally Games, who have made numerous "Star Wars"/Lucasarts titles for the PC.

In "Alien Syndrome" (Wii), players found numerous weapons, armors, and power-ups to fight alien forces on a distant planet. Cleverly, players could also team up with up to three other players to fight these aliens as a group, though this doesn't make use of WiiConnect24; the players need to be there with the original unit.

This game was also made for the PSP.
6. This Wii game was known as 'Necro-Nesia' in Japan. What was its North American name?

Answer: Escape from Bug Island

Finally, a game devoted to taking large, blunt objects, and smacking rather oversized bugs to a pulp. As much as an arachnophobic may get a kick out of hitting spiders with a stick, the game never took off. Initially meant to be similar to a B-movie, the game was a weak 'hit' at survival horror, and it garnered negative reviews across the board; mostly due to the fact that your weapon rarely surpassed a bat, and the storyline was laughable. Ironically, the story follows three people, one of whom (the love interest) happens to love bugs.

When the group wakes up on the foggy Bug Island, they have to do quests and battles with large creatures, all of which have six or more legs, to make their way home. The game was released in July 2007 in North America.
7. "Super Mario Strikers" for the Gamecube was followed up by a Wii installment in July 2007. What was the game's subtitle?

Answer: Charged

A well-received game, "Super Mario Strikers: Charged" started a streak of popular Wii games in the second half of 2007. The soccer hit became the first Mario-based sports game since the system's release, even predating "Sluggers" and "Mario Kart Wii", both of which were released in 2008. Scoring better than its predecessor, "Charged" sold more than 1.5 million copies within its first six months, surpassing the original by nearly double the sales.
"Charged" made quick and good use of the Wii's Wi-Fi connection and became the second game to release online head-to-head battles to players. As well, the game supported the use of player-created Mii characters in certain aspects. Then again, how many of us don't want to play a game of soccer as Yoshi, am I right?
The game featured twenty-one playable characters and predated "Super Mario Galaxy", released four months later.
8. What karaoke-based game released on the Wii in 2007 featured covers by The Jackson 5, Fergie, and MC Hammer?

Answer: Boogie

"Boogie" became the first game of the Wii system to USB microphone when it was released in August 2007. Although the game followed the pattern of a typical karaoke game, it also made use of the Wii remote and nunchuck to allow players to dance/boogie along to the song. Thirty-nine songs were included in the game, only a few of which were first featured in the previously-released "Singstar" games found on the Playstation systems. "Boogie" was made by EA Games on the DS, PS2, and Wii.
A sequel, "Boogie Superstar", was released in October 2008 featuring one less song. It fared poorly in a critical sense.
Two months following the release of "Boogie", "High School Musical: Sing It" was released in stores by Disney, and two months after this, the USB microphone made a comeback in the extremely-popular rhythm game, "Rock Band", which debuted before Christmas.
9. Which Wii game follows a Gamecube-based series, the second iteration of which was subtitled "Echoes"?

Answer: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

"Metroid Prime" began its stretch on the Gamecube as a revival of the popular side-scrolling platformer starring bounty hunter Samus Aran. Winning many awards from the first installment and releasing a sequel in the life-span of the Gamecube's, Nintendo set to work on a final game for the "Prime" trilogy to be released in August 2007. "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption" was the result and it featured Samus on various planets fighting a corruptive force and her own dark double.

The first-person aspect of the game fit well with the remote/nunchuck scheme, allowing the player to literally point-and-shoot, as with other recent FPSs of the system. "Metroid Prime 3" sold over one million units in its first six months on the market, surpassing "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes" in sales and nearly matching "Metroid Prime's" first installment.
10. The unexpected popularity of which 2007 game spawned a mini-golf-themed sequel released in 2008?

Answer: Carnival Games

Ironically, "Carnival Games" sold 1.5 million copies within its first six months, and after its August 2007 release, it surpassed Nintendo's first-party hit of the month ("Metroid Prime 3: Corruption") in sales for the time period. Considering that the game was not well-received commercially, the sales came as a shock, but in the end a certain demographic and strong marketing prevailed. "Carnival Games" featured more than twenty different mini-games set around a carnival/sideshow theme. Skeeball, anyone? "Carnival Games: Mini-Golf", the sequel, was released in October 2008.

While games like "Super Swing Golf" (which did garner a traditional golf sequel in December of 2007) focused more on getting the right swing and the right shot, "Carnival Games" focused their sights on the same youthful demographic as before and got a hole-in-one in that aspect.
