Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1917, the Mexican Constitution was promulgated by whom?

Answer: Venustiano Carranza

On February 5, 1917, Venustiano Carranza initiated the Mexican Constitution, although it did not come into force until May 1. The Constitution has 136 articles.

Carranza is not to be confused with Hidalgo or San Martin, who were the Mexican and Argentinian independence leaders, respectively, nor with Calderon, President of Mexico from 2006 to 2012.
2. According to the Constitution, slavery in Mexico is wrong. Which article from the bill of rights states this?

Answer: Article #2

Article #2 states that slavery is prohibited in Mexico. Article #10 refers to weapons, while Article #18 forbids unfair detainment and #21 says that only the State can impose penalties. The Bill of Rights is included in the Constitution; it covers articles 1 through 29.
3. Article #9 of the Constitution says it is right to do what in Mexico?

Answer: To have freedom of assembly

In Mexico, Article #9 gives you the right of assembly. This is also Article #20 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
4. In Mexico, Article #3 says everyone has the right to an education which is _______, free and obligatory. Fill in the blank.

Answer: Secular

Education in Mexico is secular, free and obligatory. Of course, not all education is free... or secular... or obligatory. But that is what the government offers the minute you are born a Mexican citizen. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees the right to education in Article #26.
5. Which controversial subject does Article #22 of the Mexican Constitution talk about?

Answer: Death penalty

Article #22 prohibits the State or, well, anyone else, from imposing the death penalty or mutilating someone. The death penalty is legal in some parts of the United States and in Japan.
6. For how many days is it allowable, according to the Mexican Constitution, to hold someone in prison with no evidence of their being involved in a crime?

Answer: 3

Article #19 says it is illegal to hold someone for more than 3 days unless there is proof of a felony.
7. Article #24 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of what in Mexico?

Answer: Religion

You have the right to believe in any religion you want, or to not believe at all. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights also states it in Article #18, only that is broader as it also says you have freedom of thought, while the Mexican Constitution is specific on thought and covers it specifically in Article #6.
8. There are no kings in Mexico. Which article specifically bans the nobility?

Answer: Article #12

As we have already mentioned, #3 refers to education. Article #13 says there are no private laws (only the government can apply laws), and Article #15 talks about prohibiting the extradition of foreign criminals who have committed a crime in Mexico.
9. What does Article #14 of the Mexican Constitution talk about?

Answer: No punishment without a trial

If we look back to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article #10 states everyone has the right to be heard. Article #28 in the Mexican Constitution does forbid monopolies, although there are many of them in Mexico.
10. The President of Mexico can nullify the rights of a person if the nation is in danger. True or false?

Answer: True

According to Article #29, the President has the power to suspend the rights of a person to avoid a situation that could put in danger the citizens of Mexico.
