in any match, there are 11 official players. However, there is always (at least at the professional level) a squad of players who attend the match, some of whom are in contention for selection until the moment when the team is declared for the match. They perform duties such as running out replacement equipment, carrying out drinks to the players, etc. Traditionally, the player chiefly carrying out these tasks is called the Twelfth Man. If a player is injured during the match, he can be replaced by one of these squad members (with some restrictions - the substitute cannot play a specialist position such as bowler of wicket keeper, just be in a general fielding position). There is actually no limit to the number of substitutes who can be on the field - it is not unknown for a local cricketer who happens to be around to be called on to fill in at short notice. The twelfth (thirteenth, fourteenth) man cannot bat - only the nominated team of 11 players are eligible to bat.
